  2. The political implications of state neutrality as a range concept.Ben Van de Wall - forthcoming - Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy.
The idea that the state ought to be neutral towards different conceptions of the good life has been an influential principle in liberal theory since the 1970s. It has, however, been subject to criticism by communitarians, multiculturalists and liberal perfectionists. Recently, Peter Balint has attempted to defend state neutrality against its liberal critics as the adequate interpretation of the liberal project by redefining it as a range concept. By arguing that neutrality always occurs within a specific range of permissible conceptions (...)

  3. Institutional Racism and Social Norms: On the Debate Between Rawls and Mills.Keunchang Oh - forthcoming - Philosophia.
In this paper, I engage with the debate between John Rawls and Charles Mills. In the first part, relevant works by Rawls and Mills are mainly examined. To this end, I first begin by examining Rawls’s ideal theory of justice and its relevance to the issue of racism. I then consider Mills’s non-ideal critique of Rawls and supplement it with the help of the notion of social norms. Whereas Rawls’s view can deal with racial injustice as discrimination, in my view, (...)

  4. People are not Points in Space: Network Models of Beliefs and Discussions.Peter Levine - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
Metaphors of positions, spectrums, perspectives, viewpoints, and polarization reflect the same model, which treats beliefs—and the people who hold them—as points in space. This model is deeply rooted in quantitative research methods and influential traditions of Continental philosophy, and it is evident in some qualitative research. It can suggest that deliberation is difficult and rare because many people are located far apart ideologically, and their respective positions can be explained as dependent variables of factors like personality, partisanship, and demographics. An (...)

  5. The Possibilities of Indigenous Inquiry and Third Space Youth Development Work – Towards Decolonising Praxis.Sarah Williams & Seuta'afili Gregg Morris - forthcoming - Ethics and Social Welfare.
Despite theorisation and consistent Pracademic (academics who are also practitioners) contributions to the concepts of truth-telling and decolonising epistemologies in the fields of activist research, there remains ongoing need for articulating the everyday praxis and positionality of empirical work. This paper considers the practice of two intercultural Australian-based practitioners’ examination of the ethical practices towards decolonising praxis as a contributor to third-space youth development which considers the space between participants. First Nations terminology is drawn on to explore the empirical nature (...)

  6. Power to the (Right) People: Reply to Critics.Larry Alan Busk - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
This article responds to four critics of Democracy in Spite of the Demos and reiterates its central thesis. Christopher Holman and Théophile Pénigaud attempt to maintain the critical value of democracy by invoking different elements of the deliberative tradition, while Benjamin Schupmann answers my charges by appealing to a strong liberal constitutionalism. I argue that these attempts repeat the ambivalence described and criticized in the book: democracy is taken as an end in itself, but with asterisks that introduce conditions and (...)

  7. Truth, the People, and Climate Change: Toward a Non-Ideal Approach to Democratic Legitimacy.Theophile Penigaud - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
Democracy in Spite of the Demos challenges democratic authority when the people are no longer able to make good decisions in an economic environment generating systemic social delusion. However, the solution offered to overcome the stalemate remains precarious, and the tension between democracy and emancipation is addressed with wrong conceptual tools. This calls for a reflection on the conditions for a democratically legitimate refoundation of democracy, bridging the gap between critical and democratic theory.

  9. The vicissitudes of liberalism.Duncan Ivison - 2024 - In Research Handbook on Liberalism. Cheltenham: Edward Elgar Publishing. pp. 1-28.
This is an introduction to my edited book, the Research Handbook on Liberalism (2024). Some chapters tackle broad, meta-level questions about the coherence and justificatory limits and possibilities of liberalism; others tackle conceptual issues; still others, specific institutional, cultural, historical, and political questions. This introductory chapter is intended to provide a general orientation to these discussions, but also highlight some recurring themes and challenges facing liberalism in an era of rampant inequality, illiberalism, rising autocracies, populism, and massive technological change. I (...)

  10. Learning from diversity: Public reason and the benefits of pluralism.Laura Emily Siscoe - forthcoming - Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
The New Diversity Theory (NDT) represents a novel approach to public reason liberalism, providing an alternative to the traditional, Rawlsian public reason paradigm. One of the NDT's distinctive features is its emphasis on the potential advantages of a diverse society, with a particularly strong focus on the epistemic benefits of diversity. In this paper, I call into question whether societal diversity has the epistemic benefits that New Diversity theorists claim. I highlight a number of pernicious epistemic phenomena that tend to (...)

  11. Democracy, Undeluded?Benjamin A. Schupmann - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
This article critically examines Busk's Democracy in Spite of the Demos, which critiques the “categorical imperative of democracy.” Although Busk effectively challenges the commitment to value-neutral democratic procedures as the foundation for legitimate law, his alternative, curtailing powerful interests ability to manipulate voters using “socially necessary delusions,” risks establishing elite rule. This article instead proposes basic liberal rights as the normative foundation for legitimate public order and militant democracy as its most effective institutional safeguard, arguing that this combination better realizes (...)

  16. L'alienazione artistica come macchina da guerra passando per ritornello e territorio: tra Deleuze, Guattari e Marcuse.G. Avellino - unknown
-- 08.09.2023 -- Intervention held in the discussion panel for the Summer School entitled "War, Hospitality, Theater" (3rd edition) in San Cesario di Lecce, Italy -- -/- The speech tries to delve into the complex philosophical landscape of Deleuze and Guattari’s "A thousand plateaus" and to propose a comparation between their concept of "War Machine" and that of “Artistic Alienation” from Herbert Marcuse’s mature work. 18. Ricoeur, ideology critique, and genetic phenomenology.Ka-yu Hui - 2024 - International Journal of Social Imaginaries 3 (1):64-86.
This paper elucidates Ricoeur’s use of genetic phenomenology in his analysis of ideology and utopia, and how genetic phenomenology contributes to ideology critique. I argue that Ricoeur’s analysis, examined through the lens of genetic phenomenology, unveils the genesis of the experience of ideology. I propose a model of ideology critique emphasizing the liberation of individuals from ideological delusion without proclaiming an ideology-free position. Additionally, I explore the strategic use of utopian imagination to incite liberating experiences. In conclusion, I underscore the (...)

  20. Applications of the Wide Reflective Equilibrium.Kevin Helms - 2024 - The Journal of Ethics 28 (2):215-237.
The wide reflective equilibrium (WRE) is considered the most important method of ethical justification and is intensively discussed in the scientific community. However, it is unclear to what extent it is actually applied in the ethical literature. The objective of this paper is to fill this gap by providing a critical overview of its explicit applications. Explicit application refers to studies that, following Daniels’ definition, contain three levels, name their elements, and provide a connection between the levels. Philosophers Index, ProQuest, (...)

  21. Teaching by Examples: Rousseau’s Lawgiver and the Case of Benjamin Franklin.Timothy Brennan - 2024 - Political Theory 52 (3):348-373.
Rousseau’s account of the “legislator” or “lawgiver” is commonly regarded as one of the most far-fetched, ominous, and baffling parts of his teaching in the Social Contract. In brief, Rousseau’s lawgiver seems to be a proto-totalitarian figure whose self-appointed mission is to found a political community by “denaturing” people at a single stroke and who may be a mere figment of Rousseau’s overheated imagination. Accordingly, this part of the Social Contract threatens to make a mockery of Rousseau’s claim to be (...)

  22. “Persons of the Sex are True Wonders”: Gabrielle Suchon on Difference and Political Wonders.Mary Jo MacDonald - 2024 - Political Theory 52 (3):490-516.
Gabrielle Suchon’s Treatise on Ethics and Politics offers surprising descriptions of sexual difference for an ostensibly feminist work. Stereotypically feminine traits—such as excessive emotions, chattiness, and deception—are compared to earthquakes, storms, wildfire, and apparitions. Although these descriptions may seem off-putting to modern readers, I argue that in offering these unflattering descriptions of women, Suchon is making a novel intervention in debates about the nature of sexual difference. In the Renaissance and Early Modern period, the salient question about feminine difference was (...)

  23. Rightful Power and an Ideal of Free Community: The Political Theory of Steve Biko.Ẹniọlá Ànúolúwapọ́ Ṣóyẹmí - 2024 - Political Theory 52 (3):459-489.
Steve Biko is one of the most important liberation activists of his time. Yet, his theoretical contribution is not well understood or appreciated. This article reconstructs Biko’s political ideas and introduces a new integrated reading and interpretation of his writings, speeches, and recorded interviews. It argues that Biko’s Black consciousness ideal should not only be read as engaging an activist movement or programme but, also, as encompassing an original theoretical framework grounded in a communalist ethos of Biko’s own conceptual development. 24. A Critique of Martha Nussbaum’s Liberal Aesthetics.Katie Ebner-Landy - 2024 - Political Theory 52 (3):374-403.
While we are familiar with socialist and fascist aesthetics, liberalism is not usually thought to permit a political role for literature. Nussbaum has attempted to fill this lacuna. She sketches a “liberal aesthetics” by linking three aspects of literature to her normative proposal. The representation of suffering is connected to the capability approach; the presentation of ethical dilemmas to political liberalism; and the reaction of pity to legal and political judgment. Literature is thus hoped to contribute to the stability of (...)

  25. Streaming and blocking: how to take back the streets (for democratic theory).Jan-Werner Müller - forthcoming - Contemporary Political Theory:1-19.
The built environment matters for democracy: certain forms of political action require particular types of physical space, and decisions about designing such spaces are eminently political. Specific spaces have received more attention than others, though. Relatively few theorists have sought to identify the functions of streets in a democracy. This article revisits, but also relativizes two arguments for democratic street life: an epistemic-cum-moral one about the experience of diversity, and one concerning political community-building. The article argues that streets remain crucial (...)

  26. Exploring Our Professional Role and Existential Identity as Social Work Academics in Challenging Racism and Mental Health Stigma.Joanna Fox & Jas Sangha - forthcoming - Ethics and Social Welfare.
Social work is underpinned by values of anti-oppressive practice and social justice. Our professional standards require social workers to consider their personal and professional development. Thus, this article combines a reflection on both our professional role as academics and our existential identity as social workers in challenging racism and mental health stigma. To progress equality of opportunity, we argue it is necessary to understand first what we mean by an ‘integrated society’ before we can secondly challenge diverse forms of oppression. (...)

  27. Functional Finance and the Sustainability of Universal Basic Income.Karl Widerquist - 2024 - Basic Income Studies 19 (1):15-29.
“Functional finance” is an economic theory within the Post Keynesian school of thought. Especially in the form of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), it has begun to have two big but opposite effects on the debate over Universal Basic Income (UBI). Some people state MMT in an exaggerated way that implies the government can spend all it wants on UBI or anything else without ever raising taxes or borrowing money as if government spending had no limits of any kind. Other people (...)

  29. Democracy Between Form and Content.Andrew Norris - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
In this essay I evaluate Larry Alan Busk’s critique of contemporary democratic theorists and contemporary “democratic” politics in Democracy in Spite of the Demos in the context of Carl Schmitt’s critique of modern democracy. I argue that Busk shares Schmitt’s general conception of democracy and of the dangers attending any appeal to it. Though Busk presents Herbert Marcuse and Theodor Adorno as alternatives to the current crop of democratic theorists, I demonstrate that Marcuse fell prey to the most significant of (...)

  30. Radical Democracy, Critical Theory, and the Conditions of Popular Self-Expression.Christopher Holman - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
In the paper I attempt to close the gap between the tradition of contemporary radical democracy and that of the ideology critique of Critical Theory which is opened by Larry Alan Busk in his Democracy in Spite of the Demos. I argue that, on the one hand, it is not necessarily the case that the affirmation of the two ontological hypotheses Busk identifies as essential to radical democracy – that of the autonomy of the political and that of the universality (...)

  31. Markets and Medical Decisions.Daniel M. Hausman - forthcoming - Critical Review: A Journal of Politics and Society.
This essay argues for two conclusions. First, clinical decision-making is not best thought of as analogous to the purchase of other services, such as car repair. Health-care decision-making is far more difficult, collaborative, emotionally fraught, and subject to cognitive distortions. Second, the provision of health care should not be delegated to unregulated markets. Unlike other markets, there is no reason to expect health-care market outcomes to be efficient or fair or to promote individual freedom, properly conceived. Markets may play an (...)

  32. Hate expressives institutionalized in Colombian political discourse. An analysis of ‘guerrillero’, ‘castrochavista’, ‘vándalo,’ and ‘gente de bien’.Angélica María Rodríguez Ortiz & Freddy Santamaría-Velasco - 2023 - Signo Y Pensamiento 42.
This article conducts an analysis of the ways in which the use of slurs such as "Guerrillo", "Vándalo" and "Castrochavista", as well as the dogwhistles "Gente de bien", negatively transform social reality. The intentional use of these expressions leads to the institutionalization of practices of rejection, discrimination and hatred that mobilize the collectivity in decision making and the realization of political actions that end up attacking human dignity and are a direct affront to democracy. The institutionalization of these discursive practices (...)

  34. Paine and Jefferson in the Age of Revolutions.Simon P. Newman & Peter S. Onuf (eds.) - 2013 - University of Virginia Press.
The enormous popularity of his pamphlet Common Sense made Thomas Paine one of the best-known patriots during the early years of American independence. His subsequent service with the Continental Army, his publication of The American Crisis (1776-83), and his work with Pennsylvania's revolutionary government consolidated his reputation as one of the foremost radicals of the Revolution. Thereafter, Paine spent almost fifteen years in Europe, where he was actively involved in the French Revolution, articulating his radical social, economic, and political vision (...)

Overall, it can be shown that Rawls and Dewey’s different takes on political liberalism could be ultimately (...)

  37. The ethical is political: Israel’s production of health scarcity in Gaza.Arianne Shahvisi - 2024 - Journal of Medical Ethics 50 (5):289-291.
One of the most important motifs within (medical) ethics is scarcity: where essential (health) resources are scarce, urgent ethical questions arise. Social Art: The Work of Art in Capitalism.Michael Broz - 2024 - Polish Journal of Aesthetics 67 (4):27-42.
While not considered the focus of Marx, aesthetics, and art have become a project of Marxism. But understanding art in a Marxist world requires taking Marx’s philosophy and understanding how art behaves in capitalism. I transplant the artwork to a Marxist analysis by investigating art as described by Heidegger, Dufrenne, and Merleau-Ponty, how art relates to the idea of the commodity in Marx, culture in Deleuze, and art in modern capitalism through Marcuse.

  45. Pluralism, Structural Injustice, and Reparations for Historical Injustice: A Reply to Daniel Butt.Felix Lambrecht - 2024 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 27 (2):269-275.
This paper discusses the pluralist theory of reparations for historical injustice offered by Daniel Butt (Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 24(5):1161–75, 2021). Butt attempts to vindicate purely past-regarding corrective duties in response to Alasia Nuti’s historical-structural model of reparations. I agree with Butt that reparative justice requires both past-regarding and future-looking structural duties. And I agree with him that Nuti’s model leaves out purely past-regarding duties. I argue, however, that Butt does not offer a genuinely pluralist account. I present minimal (...)

  47. Slavery with extra steps: conceptualising impersonal market domination.Louis Mosar - 2024 - Contemporary Political Theory 23 (2):228-248.
Recently, some authors have claimed that, from a republican perspective, market relations are dominating. However, _prima facie_, this idea does not fit within the (neo-)republican conceptualization of domination, which models domination on the master-slave relation. The aim of this article is to twofold. First, I try to argue that market relations can be seen as dominating. Second, I attempt to show that this can be done through an extension of the (neo-)republican conceptualization of domination. I try to achieve this by (...)

  49. Hope after ‘the end of the world’: rethinking critique in the Anthropocene.Pol Bargués, David Chandler, Sebastian Schindler & Valerie Waldow - 2024 - Contemporary Political Theory 23 (2):187-204.
Many contemporary thinkers of the Anthropocene, who attempt to articulate a non-modern and relational ontology, all too readily dismiss critical theory inherited from the Frankfurt School for being anthropocentric, failing to acknowledge certain basic similarities. Instead, this article argues that the scaffolding of Anthropocene thinking—the recognition of the origins of the contemporary condition of ‘loss of world’ and the hope of ‘living on in the ruins’—share much with earlier critical theorists’ recognition that the Holocaust necessitated a fundamental break with the (...)
