  1. From logic to nature : a study of objectivity and the idea in Hegel’s Science of Logic.Ahilleas Rokni - 2021 - Dissertation, University of Warwick
This thesis gives a new interpretation for the infamous move from Hegel’s Science of Logic to the Philosophy of Nature. Briefly, I argue that the reason for the move to the PN is grounded in the immanent development of the SL, that because of this the PN is a continuation of the examination of the determinations of thought and being that begins with the SL, and that, consequently, the PN develops according to the same methodological tenets as the SL. My (...)

  2. The experience of fiction.Eileen John - 2022 - In Patrik Engisch & Julia Langkau (eds.), The Philosophy of Fiction: Imagination and Cognition. Routledge.
Appeals to imagination to distinguish fiction from nonfiction have been persuasively challenged by philosophers such as Derek Matravers and Stacie Friend. This essay aims to uphold the importance of the fiction/nonfiction distinction by other means. Instead of relying on contrasting roles for imagination and belief, can we isolate kinds of experience that are paradigmatically sustained by fiction? Can status as fiction encourage, and help to explain, certain tendencies and qualities of experience? Several common aspects of experience, of what it is (...)

  3. A metalogical analysis of vagueness : an exploratory study into the geometry of logic.Felix Hovsepian - unknown
As early as 1958 John McCarthy stressed the importance of formulating common sense knowledge, and common sense reasoning, in a rigourous manner. Today, this is considered to be the central problem in Artificial Intelligence (AI). A strong advocate of this view is Patrick Hayes, who in 1974 argued that fuzzy logic was not a useful mechanism for representing vague terms, and suggested a better formalism could be developed using Zeeman's Tolerance Geometry. Five years later, Hayes complained about AI's emphasis on (...)

  4. The Normative Turn: Counterfactuals and a Philosophical Historiography of Science.Steve Fuller - 2008 - Isis 99:576-584.
Counterfactual reasoning is broadly implicated in causal claims made by historians. However, this point is more generally recognized and accepted by economic historians than historians of science. A good site for examining alternative appeals to counterfactuals is to consider "what if" the Scientific Revolution had not occurred in seventeenth-century Europe. Two alternative interpretations are analyzed: that the revolution would eventually have happened somewhere else or that the revolution would not have happened at all. Broadly speaking, these two interpretations correspond to (...)

  5. Logic and logogrif in German idealism : an investigation into the notion of experience in Kant, Fichte, Schelling.Kyriaki Goudeli - unknown
In this thesis I investigate the notion of experience in German Idealist Philosophy. I focus on the exploration of an alternative to the transcendental model notion of experience through Schelling's insight into the notion of logogrif. The structural division of this project into two sections reflects the two theoretical standpoints of this project, namely the logic and the logogrif of experience. The first section - the logic of experience - explores the notion of experience provided in Kant's Critique of Pure (...)
