Abstract

I should 1ike to make it clear, at the very outset of this thesis, that my essay is, in no way, an attempt to prove any final formula for the interpretation of Browning'sphilosophy. An essay of this type cannot hope to uphold any definite theory. It can only try to offer a few suggestions reached by a crttical study of the poet, himself, and his contribution to the literature of his time. At once a great thinker, a man of great originality and of great erudition. Browning is a poet of whom it would be impossible to say dogmatically how much of his philosophy is to be attributed to his own erudition and how much to his powers of original thinking. [...]
