A defense of Kantian internalism against Aristotelian approaches to practical reasoning

Abstract

Kantian internalism was developed in part as a response to objections to Kantian ethical theory leveled by philosophers such as Bernard Williams and Michael Stocker. Their arguments are evaluated in light of Kantian internalism and shown to be effectively countered. Aristotelian alternatives to Kantian internalism are considered in the context of the debate between the Kantian internalists and Williams and Stocker. Aristotelian approaches do not preclude or effectively undermine Kantian internalism, though Kantian internalism itself demands a change in focus for subsequent Kantian ethical theorizing
