    Force and Knowledge: Foucault’s Reading of Nietzsche.Kojiro Fujita - 2013 - Foucault Studies 16:116-133.
Building on Nietzsche’s view of power, Foucault developed an original analysis of power by making use of concepts like “disciplinary power,” “bio-power,” “governmentality,” etc.; however, existing studies have not sufficiently examined his reading of Nietzsche’s works on this topic. Therefore, in order to clarify the connection between the two, this article examines Foucault’s reading of Nietzsche in detail. Firstly, this article examines the notion of “force” which Foucault recognized is at the center of Nietzsche’s view of power, and will explicitly (...)

Propagation of partial randomness.Kojiro Higuchi, W. M. Phillip Hudelson, Stephen G. Simpson & Keita Yokoyama - 2014 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 165 (2):742-758.
Let f be a computable function from finite sequences of 0ʼs and 1ʼs to real numbers. We prove that strong f-randomness implies strong f-randomness relative to a PA-degree. We also prove: if X is strongly f-random and Turing reducible to Y where Y is Martin-Löf random relative to Z, then X is strongly f-random relative to Z. In addition, we prove analogous propagation results for other notions of partial randomness, including non-K-triviality and autocomplexity. We prove that f-randomness relative to a (...)

    ‘The Logic of Place’ and Common Sense.Nakamura Yūjirō & John W. M. Krummel - 2015 - Social Imaginaries 1 (1):83-103.
The essay is a written version of a talk Nakamura Yūjirō gave at the College international de philosophie in Paris in 1983. In the talk Nakamura connects the issue of common sense in his own work to that of place in Nishida Kitarō and the creative imagination in Miki Kiyoshi. He presents this connection between the notions of common sense, imagination, and place as constituting one important thread in contemporary Japanese philosophy. He begins by discussing the significance of (...)

参照構造を持つ Xml 上の高速な到達可能性判定.Maita Tetsuya Nakamura Yusaku - 2007 - Transactions of the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence 22 (2):191-199.
We propose an efficient algorithm for deciding the reachability between any nodes on XML data represented by connected directed graphs. We develop a technique to reduce the size of the reference table for the reachability test. Using the small table and the standard range labeling method for rooted ordered trees, we show that our algorithm answers almost queries in a constant time preserving the space efficiency and a reasonable preprocessing time.

    Defining a randomness notion via another.Kojiro Higuchi & Ningning Peng - 2014 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 60 (4-5):280-288.
To compare two randomness notions with each other, we ask whether a given randomness notion can be defined via another randomness notion. Inspired by Yu's pioneering study, we formalize our question using the concept of relativization of randomness. We give some solutions to our formalized questions. Also, our results include the affirmative answer to the problem asked by Yu in a discussion with the second author, i.e., whether Schnorr randomness relative to the halting problem is equivalent to Martin‐Löf randomness relative (...)

This chapter focuses on the use of effortless attention in performing daily activities and tasks. It details a study developed by The University of Chicago and Claremont Graduate University, and named the Experience Sampling Method to collect data from subjects of the study investigating the use of effortless attention in daily life. The findings are based on an ESM study of subjects consisting of middle and high school students from around the United States and the Sloan Study of Youth and (...)

On the strength of marriage theorems and uniformity.Makoto Fujiwara, Kojiro Higuchi & Takayuki Kihara - 2014 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 60 (3):136-153.
Kierstead showed that every computable marriage problem has a computable matching under the assumption of computable expanding Hall condition and computable local finiteness for boys and girls. The strength of the marriage theorem reaches or if computable expanding Hall condition or computable local finiteness for girls is weakened. In contrast, the provability of the marriage theorem is maintained in even if local finiteness for boys is completely removed. Using these conditions, we classify the strength of variants of marriage theorems in (...)

When do Physicians and Nurses Start Communication about Advance Care Planning? A Qualitative Study at an Acute Care Hospital in Japan.Mari Tsuruwaka, Yoshiko Ikeguchi & Megumi Nakamura - 2020 - Asian Bioethics Review 12 (3):289-305.
Although advance care planning can lead to more patient-centered care, the communication around it can be challenging in acute care hospitals, where saving a life or shortening hospitalization is important priorities. Our qualitative study in an acute care hospital in Japan revealed when specifically physicians and nurses start communication to facilitate ACP. Seven physicians and 19 nurses responded to an interview request, explaining when ACP communication was initiated with 32 patients aged 65 or older. Our qualitative approach employed descriptive analysis (...)

Modulation of Muscle Synergies in Lower-Limb Muscles Associated With Split-Belt Locomotor Adaptation.Atsushi Oshima, Yasuo Nakamura & Kiyotaka Kamibayashi - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16.
Humans have great locomotor adaptability to environmental demands, which has been investigated using a split-belt treadmill with belts on both the left and right sides. Thus far, neuromuscular control in split-belt locomotor adaptation has been evaluated by analyzing muscle activities at the individual muscle level. Meanwhile, in the motor control field, the muscle synergy concept has been proposed. Muscle synergies are considered the fundamental building blocks of movement and are groups of coactive muscles and time-varying activation patterns, thereby, reflecting the (...)

On the size of refutation Kripke models for some linear modal and tense logics.Hiroakira Ono & Akira Nakamura - 1980 - Studia Logica 39 (4):325 - 333.
LetL be any modal or tense logic with the finite model property. For eachm, definer L (m) to be the smallest numberr such that for any formulaA withm modal operators,A is provable inL if and only ifA is valid in everyL-model with at mostr worlds. Thus, the functionr L determines the size of refutation Kripke models forL. In this paper, we will give an estimation ofr L (m) for some linear modal and tense logicsL.

Nuclear denial in Japan: the network power of an energy industrial complex.Michael C. Dreiling, Tomoyasu Nakamura & Yvonne A. Braun - forthcoming - Theory and Society:1-39.
Given the known hazards of nuclear energy in seismically active Japan after the Fukushima meltdowns as well as the presence of viable conservation and renewable energy options, the question of Japan’s stalled energy transition warrants critical interrogation. To better understand why, after Fukushima, Japan’s energy policy trajectory maintained the nuclear status quo and an increased reliance on fossil fuels, this article employs network and historical analyses to examine the confluence of post-Fukushima political forces connected to Japan’s nuclear energy sector. Our (...)

Compassion As an Intervention to Attune to Universal Suffering of Self and Others in Conflicts: A Translational Framework.S. Shaun Ho, Yoshio Nakamura & James E. Swain - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
As interpersonal, racial, social, and international conflicts intensify in the world, it is important to safeguard the mental health of individuals affected by them. According to a Buddhist notion “if you want others to be happy, practice compassion; if you want to be happy, practice compassion,” compassion practice is an intervention to cultivate conflict-proof well-being. Here, compassion practice refers to a form of concentrated meditation wherein a practitioner attunes to friend, enemy, and someone in between, thinking, “I’m going to help (...)
