Objectives: Mental disorders are vastly underdiagnosed in low-income countries that disproportionately affect women. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of common mental disorders in newly postpartum women, and stigma associated with mental health reporting in an Ethiopian community using a validated World Health Organization survey.Methods: The Self Reporting Questionnaire for psychological distress was administered in Amharic by nurses to 118 women aged 18–37 years who had given birth in the prior 3 months in the Glenn C. Olsen Memorial Primary Hospital (...) in Yetebon. Mental health stigma among the four nursing staff was assessed using Link and Phelan's Components of Stigma.Results: Among 118 women surveyed, 18% had a probable common mental disorder using the SRQ 4/5 cutoff and 2% admitted to suicidal thoughts. Presence of stigma in the healthcare staff was verified, including labeling, stereotyping, separating, and status loss and discrimination.Conclusion: Postpartum mental health disorders as well as stigma against such diagnoses are common in the Yetebon community. There is an urgent need for increased availability of properly trained and supervised healthcare staff in the identification and referral of postpartum women with common mental disorders. (shrink)

The work aims at discussing the double character of works of art in Adorno’s writings. It will be examined the arguments defended by Adorno about the social character of art, especially in the case of music, in which can be seen how the development of the material expresses the contradictions of society. By means of a dialectical critique Adorno discuss the way in which works of art respond to the social problems and become possibilities of resistance to reification. It will (...) be also analyzed the negative influence of culture industry on works of art. Therefore, the paper reflects about the concept of autonomous art as the hermetic character of works of art that enable them a development according their internal rules, without being submitted to a social function. In this sense, it is necessary that the reception of works of art be determined not by the aesthetic pleasure, but by the possibility of disclosing their truth content. The dialectic relation between art and society makes works of art critical and resistant to reification. (shrink)

BackgroundRespecting patients’ confidentiality is an ethical and legal responsibility for health professionals and the cornerstone of care excellence. This study aims to assess health professionals’ knowledge, attitudes, and associated factors towards patients’ confidentiality in a resource-limited setting.MethodsInstitutional based cross-sectional study was conducted among 423 health professionals. Stratified sampling methods were used to select the participants, and a structured self-administer questionnaire was used for data collection. The data was entered using Epi-data version 4.6 and analyzed using SPSS, version 25. Bi-variable and (...) multivariable binary logistic regression analyses were used to measure the association between the dependent and independent variables. Odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals and P value was calculated to determine the strength of association and to evaluate statistical significance.ResultOut of 410 participants, about 59.8% with [95% CI (54.8–68.8%)] and 49.5% with [95% CI (44.5–54.5%)] had good knowledge and favorable attitude towards patents confidentiality respectively. Being male (AOR = 1.63, 95% CI [1.03–2.59]), taking training on medical ethics (AOR = 1.73, 95% CI = [1.11–2.70]), facing ethical dilemmas (AOR = 3.07, 95% CI [1.07–8.79]) were significantly associated factors for health professional knowledge towards patients’ confidentiality. Likewise, taking training on medical ethics (AOR = 2.30, 95% CI [1.42–3.72]), having direct contact with the patients (AOR = 3.06, 95% CI [1.12–8.34]), visiting more patient (AOR = 4.38, 95% CI [2.46–7.80]), and facing ethical dilemma (AOR = 3.56, 95% CI [1.23–10.26]) were significant factors associated with attitude of health professionals towards patient confidentiality.ConclusionThe findings of this study revealed that health professionals have a limited attitude towards patient confidentiality but have relatively good knowledge. Providing a continuing medical ethics training package for health workers before joining the hospital and in between the working time could be recommended to enhance health professionals’ knowledge and attitude towards patient confidentiality. As a way of extending Jacques Derrida’s urging that philosophers think about the findings of recent scientific animal studies, this essay asserts that such attention to ethology, primatology, evolutionary biology, and neuroscience makes it necessary to accept a biological continuum between humans and other animals. Countering Heidegger’s claims of abyssal difference and Derrida’s apparent agreement, this discussion examines work by Terrence Deacon and Philip Lieberman on the evolution of human speech, studies in animal communication, genetics, and biosemiotics to demonstrate our (...) kinship with other animals, but also our distinctive abilities. Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s Nature lectures provide a theoretical understanding of this strange kinship and an early philosophical engagement with science that anticipated Derrida’s notion of its relevance. Final attention to Derrida’s claims that it would be trop bête to speak of biological continuism reveals the possibility that he intended to undermine such a position and open the way for philosophy to consider primatology and evolutionary genetics. For the traditional legalistic discourse on the International Criminal Court, “politics” is a bête noire that compromises the independence of the Court and thus needs to be avoided and overcome. In response to this legalistic approach, a burgeoning body of literature insists that the Court does not exist and operate “beyond politics”, arguing that the ICC is an institution where law and politics are intimately connected. The present article seeks to contribute to this “non-traditional” literature by addressing two of its (...) fundamental weaknesses: First, writers of the “non-traditional camp” often present a rather limited view of “politics”; in particular, they have shied away from taking the radical step of portraying and analysing the ICC as a “political actor”. This undermines both its critical and constructive potential. Secondly, these commentators offer a simplistic explanation as to why “traditionalists” treat politics as the ICC’s bête noire: Traditionalists, they claim, are “legalists” with scant interest in and understanding of politics. By focusing on the ICC’s nature as a political actor, this article does not only paint a more nuanced picture of the ICC but also demonstrates the constructive potential of this understanding of the ICC to shed light on the so-called “peace versus justice dilemma”. And secondly, it demonstrates that precisely because the ICC is and ought to be a prudent political actor, it must officially disavow politics. The “noble lie” of disavowing politics, therefore, is a prudential strategy to avoid dangerous moral and political consequences and, ultimately, to secure the continued existence of the ICC itself. La figure de l’animal apparaît de façon surprenante au sein de la spiritualité monastique du xi e siècle de l’Occident médiéval. Le moine est invité à « imiter la bête » dans sa simplicité et dans sa bravoure au combat. Saint Pierre Damien d’une part, et Othlon de Saint-Emmeran d’autre part, invitent tous deux leurs frères à prendre exemple sur les animaux pour accéder à l’état de componction qui unit à Dieu. Les deux spirituels exhortent à une conversion de la (...) raison discursive à « l’intelligence naturelle », faculté qu’il s’agit, si ce n’est de retrouver, du moins d’apprendre à exercer. On assiste à une promotion toute singulière de l’instinct, accompagnée d’une destitution de la raison dans la voie du salut. C’est à l’examen de cette thèse, qui ne laisse pas d’étonner en ce qu’elle désigne l’absence de rationalité comme chemin sûr qui mène à Dieu, que cet article est consacré. (shrink)

Dans la deuxième moitié des années 1980 s’est développée, dans l’ensemble du champ de la culture, une véritable esthétique de la bêtise. Quelques jeunes critiques d’art se sont alors emparés du phénomène et ont tenté de le théoriser, entre 1994 et 1998, dans les revues les plus lues de l’époque : Flash Art International, Artpress, Frieze. L’étude de ce corpus d’articles (signés par Joshua Decter, Éric Troncy, Jon Savage, Andrew Hulktrans et Jean-Yves Jouannais) témoigne à la fois des mutations de (...) la critique d’art de l’époque et de l’enjeu que représente alors l’art délibérément bête. On remarquera que la critique d’art se fait alors critique culturelle : elle regarde peu les œuvres, réduites au statut d’illustrations et d’arguments visuels. On s’interrogera également sur la place que les revues d’art contemporain ont accordée à la culture populaire médiatique la plus régressive du temps. Beavis & Butt-Head, Melrose Place ou encore Alerte à Malibu ont été ainsi disséqués dans les colonnes d’ Artforum ou de Flash Art. Alors que les œuvres d’art estampillées « art contemporain » donnaient lieu à des analyses étonnamment sommaires, ce sont les séries télévisées et les dessins animés qui ont conduit aux analyses les plus stimulantes. Elles l’ont fait en recourant au paradigme de la méta-criticalité cher au modernisme, conférant aux œuvres les plus régressives le statut d’image spéculaire, à la fois duplice et critique, de la culture de la bêtise qui les générait. Pointe alors le paradoxe suivant : alternant entre l’enthousiasme forcené et la déploration, la critique d’art des années 1990 a intellectualisé l’anti-intellectualisme le plus radical. (shrink)

The deconstruction of stupidity [in French bêtise] plays a crucial role in Derrida’s The Beast and the Sovereign. Through the concept of stupidity/bêtise the violence of our relationship with others, as inseparable from our relation to animality comes into view. “Stupidity” is deeply political, but also directly connected to the trace and, thus, cannot be simply overcome. While Sartre claimed that there are no fools, but just wicked men, Derrida embraces an uncanny version of stupidity. In this paper, guided by (...) Derrida’s reflections, we will examine the many paradoxes that undermine the pseudo-concept of stupidity, as well as several key moments of its history in Schelling’s, Nietzsche’s, Sartre’s, and Deleuze’s philosophies. Eventually our purpose will be to display the ethical statements which can be extrapolated from Derrida’s perspective: when the world is gone, how can we carry stupidity? (shrink)

Standard interpretations have it that insofar as Descartes intends to establish the bête machine doctrine his arguments are palpably flawed. One camp of interpreters thus disputes that he even holds the doctrine. As I (...) shall attempt to show, not only does Descartes affirm the doctrine, his supporting arguments are not palpably flawed – even if they ultimately come up short. Since the studies of Adolphe Quetelet, Franz von Liszt, and Cesare Lombroso, an empirical discourse has been established at the borders of statistics, criminology, and jurisprudence that sees in the dangerous individual a paradigmatic figure of the abnormal. Zola’s novel La bête humaine converges with this statistically induced criminology in at least three points: 1. in the reference to the complex of the dangerous individual; 2. in the assumption that all social processes have a reason in a fictitious figure; and (...) 3. in the detection of a danger area in which the social body is measured alongside a distribution scale of norm and defiance. These aspects point to the fact that a diffuse and dangerous force is working within the social body as well as within the body of the individual. All social relationships are pervaded by an energetics and a drive that functions automatically and out of reach of the will of the individual. (shrink)

Charles S. Peirce’s and Sigmund Freud’s theories may be used to interpret Jean Cocteau’s film La Belle et la Bête (1946). This film has a specific set of codes which connote its filmic language. Cocteau uses fetishistic objects as symbols and icons to reflect the psychological meaning of the film’s narrative. Peirce’s icons and symbols include the connection a person may make through the conventions and expressions of language a person links with the object or idea being observed. Peirce’s semiotic (...) theory functions as a theory of communication. His theory refocuses on culture. Freud’s theories can be linked with ideas produced by Peirce in forming sign relations with the interpretation of the film and the role of imagination in the film. Especially important are Freud’s ideas of repression, conscious and unconscious as they relate to Cocteau’s filmic narrative and the film’s main character Belle. (shrink)

There is a lamp suspended from a tree and a man sitting at a Louis Quinze table that stands in the open air. Clothes flap from a clothesline aboard a barge like flapping sails or even like discarded skins. In Georges Franju’s film Le Sang des bêtes/Blood of the Beasts, the violence of “displacement” (...) is seen in the juxtaposition of out-of-place curios in the vacant lot and the dismemberment of bodies in the slaughterhouse. İbn Sînâ, sonrakilerden bazılarının kâide-i vâhid veya “bir kuralı” (BK) olarak adlandırdığı şeyin sıkı bir savunucusudur. BK’nın ana fikri şunu ifade etmektedir: Birden, doğrudan, yalnızca bir ortaya çıkar. İbn Sînâcı bu kuralın ikincil literatürdeki tartışması genellikle onun hususi bir uygulama alanı yani, sudûr meselesiyle sınırlıdır. Sonuç itibarıyla, BK’nın ne anlama geldiği ve İbn Sînâ’nın onu neden savunduğu kesin değildir. Bu yazıda ben bu meseleyi iki şey yaparak çözmeye çalışmaktayım: Bunlardan biri tasavvur, diğeri ise tasdik açısındandır. İlkin, sadece BK’nın terimlerinin, yani (...) onun özne ve yükleminin ne anlama geldiğini açıklamaktayım. Bunu yaparken, BK’nın dar ve geniş anlamları arasında ayırım yapmakta ve İbn Sînâcı bakış açısından BK’nın kapsamının geniş olduğunu; bunun ise BK’nın fail nedenliğin temel ilkesi olduğu anlamına geldiğini göstermekteyim. Bu sebepledir ki, farklı bağlamlarda önemli felsefî tezleri inşa etmede bu kurala başvurulmuştur. İkinci olarak, İbn Sînâ’nın el- Mübâhasât’ta BK’na dair sunduğu argümanı değerlendirmekteyim. Bu argümanı açıklarken onun bazı gerçekçi varsayımlarını ortaya çıkarmaktayım. Sonrasında, ilk olarak Behmenyâr tarafından öne sürülen ve daha sonrasında Fahreddin er-Râzî tarafından yaygınlaştırılan bir eleştiri ışığında bu meseleyi daha açık hale getirmekteyim. Si les paroles du Qohéleth ne manquent pas de provoquer le lecteur, l’assimilation de l’homme et de la bête en QO 3,19 est certainement une des affirmations les plus rudes du texte. Cet article s’intéresse à cette étonnante pensée par une lecture des versets 3,16-21 de l’Ecclésiaste qui met en valeur l’effet de sens produit par la conjonction de deux propos dont le lien n’est pas spontané : le jugement de Dieu et la mort identique de l’homme et de la (...) bête. L’approche exégétique et littéraire montre comment Qohéleth déploie une réflexion de type fondamental sur l’homme qui, à travers une négation à la fois anthropologique et éthique, met violemment en question le sens de l’homme, de son agir, en référence au jugement et au gouvernement divin. C’est en négatif que la relation entre justice de Dieu et création apparaît. La mort de l’homme met Dieu en cause en interrogeant non seulement la pertinence d’un jugement appliqué à un homme dont la mort est semblable à celle de la bête, mais aussi le geste créateur de Dieu et les commencements, là où se décide la destinée humaine. If the words of Qoheleth do not fail to provoke the reader, the assimilation of man and animal in QO 3,19 is certainly one of the harshest affirmations of the text. The article is interested in this astonishing idea through a reading of verses 3,16-21 of Ecclesiastes, which highlights the effect of meaning produced by the conjunction of two statements whose connection is not spontaneous: the judgment of God, and a death that is identical in man and animal. An exegetical and literary approach shows how Qoheleth makes use of a fundamental type of reflection on man, who, through a negation at once anthropological and ethical, violently puts into question the meaning of man and his behavior, in reference to divine judgment and government. The relation between the justice of God and creation appears in a negative light. Man’s death implicates God by questioning, not only the pertinence of judgment applied to a man whose death is similar to that of an animal, but also the creative gesture of God and beginnings, there where human destiny is decided. Après l’histoire de la folie et celle de la prison, Foucault a abordé l’histoire de la sexualité. Nous retracerons d’abord les trois moments de cette histoire: l’antiquité gréco-romaine, le christianisme et la société bourgeoise. Nous insisterons ensuite sur ce qui caractérise, en Occident, notre époque, à savoir l’extension de « l’aveu » dans tous les domaines investis par les sciences humaines. Ce qui nous amènera à mettre l’accent sur l’enjeu philosophique d’une telle histoire, à savoir la question de la vérité.

Proust prend donc le chemin de l’«esprit représentation». À la suite de la discussion du débat entre Montaigne et Descartes au sujet de la pensée chez les animaux, elle met au jour deux dimensions de ce que l’on appelle traditionnellement la «pensée», soit la capacité complexe à gérer des informations et la capacité à former des représentations internes. Comme l’a montré Searle dans le célèbre exemple de la chambre chinoise, la manipulation de représentations n’est pas une condition suffisante pour la (...) pensée. C’est plutôt la capacité de former des représentations possédant une intentionnalité intrinsèque sur laquelle il faudra se pencher si on veut trouver la marque minimale du mental. Après avoir critiqué les positions respectives de Searle, qui maintient que la conscience sous la forme de l’aspectualité est nécessaire au caractère intrinsèque des représentations, et de Dennett, pour qui il n’y a d’intentionnalité que dérivée, Proust considère les arguments de ceux qui croient que l’intentionnalité ne constitue pas un objet d’étude de bon aloi. Elle s’intéresse principalement à la position de Davidson pour qui la normativité inhérente à l’attribution d’attitudes propositionnelles pose un frein à la tentative de naturalisation de l’intentionnalité. Mais, selon elle, la conception de Davidson de la rationalité à l’œuvre dans l’attribution est trop forte: une conception qui ne poserait que l’existence de liens nomiques entre les représentations et la réalité est suffisante à l’interprétation. D’autre part, la théorie davidsonnienne pose que le mental est co-extensif à l’ensemble des attitudes propositionnelles. Cette hypothèse empêche, toujours selon Proust, de comprendre les conditions plus générales de la représentation dont le langage n’est qu’un cas. Elle est donc amenée à critiquer cette idée en montrant que le passage des contraintes portant sur la théorie de l’interprétation à l’ontologie des états mentaux n’est pas justifié. Ces deux critiques appellent le dépassement des pratiques interprétatives fondées sur la psychologie ordinaire et l’établissement d’une méthode d’interprétation scientifique des états mentaux. La distinction entre ce qui est rationnel et ce qui ne l’est pas, si structurante pour la fin de l’Antiquité et le Moyen Âge, empêche-t-elle de concevoir une condition animale commune aux bêtes et aux hommes, et surtout la possibilité d’une entente et d’une intelligence entre eux? Cet article montre que cette distinction agit comme un obstacle épistémologique dans la cosmologie et l’anthropologie du cistercien Guillaume de Saint-Thierry, pour qui la raison constitue à la fois le sommet de la vie (...) animée et la faculté qui met irrémédiablement l’homme à part. C’est sous la pression d’une expérience, celle de François d’Assise, que cette distinction, sans jamais être annulée, se trouve suspendue chez les auteurs franciscains qui méditent sur la vie du Poverello : « comme si elles avaient par à la raison », les bêtes forment avec François d’Assise une communauté de créatures qui se comprennent grâce à une intelligence plus vaste que la rationalité humaine. In this review of two books, Descartes: An Intellectual Biography, by Stephen Gaukroger, and Descartes and his Contemporaries: Meditations, Objections, and Replies, edited by Roger Ariew and Marjorie Grene, I consider arguments about the motivation of Descartes for writing the Meditations on First Philosophy. According to Gaukroger, Descartes wrote the Meditations simply to legitimate his natural philosophy, which he had already worked out, for an audience of theologians and Scholastic philosophers, whom he feared would condemn it (as Galileo had been (...) condemned by the Inquisition in 1633). If Gaukroger is right, it would explain something that is not mentioned in the collection edited by Ariew and Grene, namely, that five of the seven sets of objections are from theologians, and that the strong objections made by philosophers Gassendi and Hobbes are given relatively short shrift, whereas, the weak objections made by the Jesuit theologian Pierre Bourdin are responded to at great length. Gaukroger, however, has an extremely implausible interpretation of Descartes's position on animals, according to which Descartes held that animals had thoughts and experiences, just not thoughts and experiences like ours, and hence, that he did not think of animals as machines (the "bete machine" hypothesis). Bilimin ne olduğunun belirlenmesi ve bu bağlamda bilimin sözde bilim ya da bilimsel olmayan alanlara ilişkin sınırının nasıl çizileceği tartışması, bilim felsefesinde sınır çizme problemi olarak ele alınmaktadır. Çalışmanın ana konusunu oluşturan bu problem, özellikle yirminci yüzyıldan itibaren, bilim felsefecileri tarafından birçok ölçüt ortaya konularak çözümlenmeye çalışılmıştır. Bu ölçütler genellikle, bilim ile sözde bilim arasındaki sınırı belirlemek amacıyla, bilimi mantık ve mantıksal önermeler üzerinden değerlendirmektedir. Şu ana kadar Viyana Çevresi, Popper, Kuhn, Lakatos gibi filozoflarca ortaya konulan ölçütler, nihai olarak problemi (...) mantıksal açıdan ele almıştır. Sınır çizme sorununun mantıksal açıdan ya da mantıksal ifadeler aracılığıyla ele alınması demek; sorunu içeriği yerine daha çok biçimsel açıdan ele almak anlamına gelmektedir. Ayrıca, ifade, kuram, araştırma programı gibi bilim öğelerinin bilimsellik durumunu tespit edebilmek amacıyla önerilen ölçütün, tek tek gerekli ve hep birlikte yeterli olan uygun sınır çizme ölçütünü karşılaması anlamına da gelmektedir. Bu çalışma, gerek ve yeter koşul arayışının, bilimin değişken ve çeşitli yapısını tam olarak yakalayamayacağını ve bilimin belirlenmesinin ve sınırının çizilmesinin bu yöntemle mümkün olmayacağını vurgulamaktadır. Bu konunun mutlaka sosyolojik açıdan da ele alınması gerekmektedir. Bilimin sosyal yapısına, değerler sistemine de bakmamız gerekir. Sonuç olarak, sınır çizme probleminin gerek ve yeter koşulun ortaya koyduğu katı ve ortak özellikler üzerinden sonuçlandırılamayacağı, bunun yerine bilimin “aile benzerliği yaklaşımı” çerçevesinde ele alınması gerektiği vurgulanacaktır. Aile benzerliği yaklaşımının temel oluşturduğu çok boyutlu ölçüt, bu sorunun çözümünde sosyal etkenleri dâhil etmesi, bilimin çeşitliliğini kapsayabilecek ölçüde çoklu ve esnek yapıda olması ile katkıda bulunacaktır.
