    Brain regionalization by Polycomb‐group proteins and chromatin accessibility.Hikaru Eto & Yusuke Kishi - 2021 - Bioessays 43 (11):2100155.
During brain development, neural precursor cells (NPCs) in different brain regions produce different types of neurons, and each of these regions plays a different role in the adult brain. Therefore, precise regionalization is essential in the early stages of brain development, and irregular regionalization has been proposed as the cause of neurodevelopmental disorders. The mechanisms underlying brain regionalization have been well studied in terms of morphogen‐induced expression of critical transcription factors for regionalization. NPC potential in different brain regions is defined (...)

Training of Motion Control May Not Improve Tool-Manipulation Ability in Rats.Akane Nagano - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
In recent times, previous studies have reported the manipulation of tools by rats and degus in controlled experimental settings. However, a previous study reported that only one out of eight experimentally naïve rats could manipulate a rake-shaped tool according to the position of a food reward without prior experience of obtaining the reward with the tool before the test. The present study aimed to improve the training of rats and investigate rodents’ ability to manipulate tools according to food position. Stricter (...)

Young Durkheimians and the temptation of fascism.Mathieu Hikaru Desan & Johan Heilbron - 2015 - History of the Human Sciences 28 (3):22-50.
In this article we assess the general claim that Durkheimian sociology has reactionary, fascist, or totalitarian affinities, and the specific claim that Marcel Déat’s Durkheimian background was a significant factor in his becoming a Nazi sympathizer. We do so by comparing the different trajectories of the interwar generation of young Durkheimians and find that only one, i.e. Déat, can be said to have become fascist. Indeed, what characterizes this generation of Durkheimians is the variety of the ways in which they (...)

    Bankrupted Detroit.Mathieu Hikaru Desan - 2014 - Thesis Eleven 121 (1):122-130.
The recent declaration of the largest municipal bankruptcy in US history has propelled Detroit’s plight into the international spotlight. Though a victim of the general decline of US manufacturing, drawing on Thomas Sugrue’s pioneering work I argue that Detroit’s crisis is better understood as a specifically urban crisis. The city’s concentrated poverty and desolation and its fiscal straits are not reducible to broader economic trends, nor are they exclusively the product of political mismanagement. Rather, they are the outcome of a (...)

Corporate Social Responsibility and Gender Equality in Japan: Historical and Current Perspectives.Gabriel Eweje & Shima Nagano (eds.) - 2021 - Springer Verlag.
This book examines key issues in gender equality and corporate social responsibility in Japan. Legal compliance, the business case and social regulation are examined as driving factors for enhancing gender equality in corporations. In turn, case studies from various contexts, such as the hotel industry, retail and financial services companies add practical insights to the theoretical debate. The role of governments, NGOs and supranational organizations is examined as well. Given its scope, the book will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students, (...)

The value of values-based supply chains: farmer perspective.Gwenael Engelskirchen, Christy Anderson Brekken, Keiko Tanaka, Marcia Ostrom, Gail Feenstra & Hikaru Hanawa Peterson - 2021 - Agriculture and Human Values 39 (1):385-403.
In the last few decades, the emergence of mid-scale, intermediated marketing channels that fall between commodity and direct markets has attracted growing interest from scholars for their potential to preserve small and mid-sized farms while scaling up alternative agrifood sourcing. When such mid-scale supply chains are formed among multiple business partners with shared ethics or values related to the qualities of the food and the business relationships along the supply chain, they may be termed “values-based supply chains (VBSCs).” Most of (...)

Japanese American Resettlement Through the Lens: Hikaru Iwasaki and the Wra's Photographic Section, 1943-1945.Lane Ryo Hirabayashi, Kenichiro Shimada & Hikaru Iwasaki - 2009 - University Press of Colorado.
SUPERANNO A unique collection of photographs by WRA photographer Hikaru Iwasaki focuses on resettlement using photos of Japanese Americans following their release from WRA camps from 1943 to 1945. Author Lane Hirabayashi explores the use of photography in the WRA mission to encourage “loyal” Japanese Americans to return to society at large, and convince Euro-Americans this was safe. Hirabayashi also assesses the success of the WRA project, and the multiple uses of the photographs over time.

Changes in corticospinal and spinal reflex excitability through functional electrical stimulation with and without observation and imagination of walking.Naotsugu Kaneko, Atsushi Sasaki, Hikaru Yokoyama, Yohei Masugi & Kimitaka Nakazawa - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:994138.
Functional electrical stimulation (FES), a method for inducing muscle contraction, has been successfully used in gait rehabilitation for patients with deficits after neurological disorders and several clinical studies have found that it can improve gait function after stroke and spinal cord injury. However, FES gait training is not suitable for patients with walking difficulty, such as those with severe motor paralysis of the lower limbs. We have previously shown that action observation combined with motor imagery (AO + MI) of walking (...)

No Impact of Stochastic Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation on Arterial Pressure and Heart Rate Variability in the Elderly Population.Akiyoshi Matsugi, Koji Nagino, Tomoyuki Shiozaki, Yohei Okada, Nobuhiko Mori, Junji Nakamura, Shinya Douchi, Kosuke Oku, Kiyoshi Nagano & Yoshiki Tamaru - 2021 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 15:646127.
ObjectiveNoisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) is often used to improve postural stability in disorders, such as neurorehabilitation montage. For the safe use of nGVS, we investigated whether arterial pressure (AP) and heart rate vary during static supine and slow whole-body tilt with random nGVS (0.4 mA, 0.1–640 Hz, gaussian distribution) in a healthy elderly population.MethodsThis study was conducted with a double-blind, sham-controlled, cross-over design. Seventeen healthy older adults were recruited. They were asked to maintain a static supine position on a (...)

Evidentials and modals.Chungmin Lee & Jinho Park (eds.) - 2020 - Boston: Brill.
Evidentials and Modals offers an in-depth account of the meaning of grammatical elements representing evidentiality in connection to modality, focusing on theoretical/formal perspectives by eminent pioneers in the field and on recently discovered phenomena in Korean evidential markers by native scholars in particular. Evidentiality became a hot topic in semantics and pragmatics, trying to see what kind of evidential justification is provided by evidentials to support or be related to the 'at-issue' prejacent propositions. This book aims to provide a deeper (...)
