Attentional bias during emotional processing: evidence from an emotional flanker task using IAPS.Mario A. Parra, Manuel Guillermo Sánchez, Stella Valencia & Natalia Trujillo - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (2):275-285.
Attention is biased towards threat-related stimuli. In three experiments, we investigated the mechanisms, processes, and time course of this processing bias. An emotional flanker task simultaneously presented affective or neutral pictures from the international affective picture system database either as central response-relevant stimuli or surrounding response-uninformative flankers. Participants’ response times to central stimuli was measured. The attentional bias was observed when stimuli were presented either for 1500 ms or 500 ms. The threat-related attentional bias held regardless of the stimuli competing (...)

Modulation of Response Times During Processing of Emotional Body Language.Alessandro Botta, Giovanna Lagravinese, Marco Bove, Alessio Avenanti & Laura Avanzino - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:616995.
The investigation of how humans perceive and respond to emotional signals conveyed by the human body has been for a long time secondary compared with the investigation of facial expressions and emotional scenes recognition. The aims of this behavioral study were to assess the ability to process emotional body postures and to test whether motor response is mainly driven by the emotional content of the picture or if it is influenced by motor resonance. Emotional body postures and scenes (IAPS) divided (...)

Brightness differences influence the evaluation of affective pictures.Daniël Lakens, Daniel A. Fockenberg, Karin P. H. Lemmens, Jaap Ham & Cees J. H. Midden - 2013 - Cognition and Emotion 27 (7):1225-1246.
We explored the possibility of a general brightness bias: brighter pictures are evaluated more positively, while darker pictures are evaluated more negatively. In Study 1 we found that positive pictures are brighter than negative pictures in two affective picture databases (the IAPS and the GAPED). Study 2 revealed that because researchers select affective pictures on the extremity of their affective rating without controlling for brightness differences, pictures used in positive conditions of experiments were on average brighter than those used in (...)

Pollution from cooking in rural and poor urban households of Africa: A methodological review.Sasi Gangiah - 2022 - HTS Theological Studies 78 (2):11.
The article examines the effect of cooking food in kitchens on the health of women, as women and children are at a greater risk to indoor air pollution (IAP). It is important to study the cooking practices and prevalent behaviours among African women to understand the magnitude of the danger they face. The study suggests that a decline in the combustion of solid fuels and the use of clean energy can improve health among women and children, as well as sustainability (...)

Emotional Assessment in Spanish Youths With Antisocial Behavior.Juan García-García, María José Gil-Fenoy, María Blasa Sánchez-Barrera, Leticia de la Fuente-Sánchez, Elena Ortega-Campos, Flor Zaldívar-Basurto & Encarna Carmona-Samper - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12:671851.
Impaired emotional capacity in antisocial populations is a well-known reality. Taking the dimensional approach to the study of emotion, emotions are perceived as a disposition to action; they emerge from arousal of the appetitive or aversive system, and result in subjective, behavioral, and physiological responses that are modulated by the dimensions of valence, arousal, and dominance. This study uses the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) to study the interaction between the type of picture presented (pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant) and group (...)

    The Elite Athlete - In a State of Exception?Lev Kreft - 2009 - Sport, Ethics and Philosophy 3 (1):3-18.
At IAPS Ljubljana conference (September 2007) Dag Vidar Hanstad and Sigmund Loland presented a paper on elite-level athletes' duty to provide information on their whereabouts, to decide between two opposing positions: is this WADA demand justifiable anti-doping work or an indefensible surveillance regime? They concluded that on moral grounds this regime is conditionally acceptable, the condition being the acceptability of a general framework and objectives embodied in anti-doping global legislative foundations (the World Anti-Doping Code). But, as they said, principled objections (...)

What determines a feeling's position in affective space? A case for appraisal.Klaus Scherer, Elise Dan & Anders Flykt - 2006 - Cognition and Emotion 20 (1):92-113.
The location of verbally reported feelings in a three-dimensional affective space is determined by the results of appraisal processes that elicit the respective states. One group of participants rated their evaluation of 59 pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) on a profile of nine appraisal criteria. Another group rated their affective reactions to the same pictures on the classic dimensions of affective meaning (valence, arousal, potency). The ratings on the affect dimensions correlate differentially with specific appraisal ratings. These (...)

  15. The logic of being informed.Luciano Floridi - 2006 - Logique Et Analyse 49 (196):433-460.
One of the open problems in the philosophy of information is whether there is an information logic (IL), different from epistemic (EL) and doxastic logic (DL), which formalises the relation “a is informed that p” (Iap) satisfactorily. In this paper, the problem is solved by arguing that the axiom schemata of the normal modal logic (NML) KTB (also known as B or Br or Brouwer’s system) are well suited to formalise the relation of “being informed”. After having shown that IL (...)

Specificity deficit in the recollection of emotional memories in schizophrenia☆☆☆.Aurore Neumann, Sylvie Blairy, Damien Lecompte & Pierre Philippot - 2007 - Consciousness and Cognition 16 (2):469-484.
The influence of emotion on episodic and autobiographical memory in schizophrenia was investigated. Using an experiential approach, the states of awareness accompanying recollection of pictures from the IAPS and of associated autobiographical memories was recorded. Results show that schizophrenia impairs episodic and autobiographical memories in their critical feature: autonoetic awareness, i.e., the type of awareness experienced when mentally reliving events from one’s past. Schizophrenia was also associated with a reduction of specific autobiographical memories. The impact of stimulus valence on memory (...)

Emotional time distortions: The fundamental role of arousal.Sandrine Gil & Sylvie Droit-Volet - 2012 - Cognition and Emotion 26 (5):847-862.
An emotion-based lengthening effect on the perception of durations of emotional pictures has been assumed to result from an arousal-based mechanism, involving the activation of an internal clock system. The aim of this study was to systematically examine the arousal effect on time perception when different discrete emotions were considered. The participants were asked to verbally estimate the duration of emotional pictures from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS). The pictures varied either in arousal level, i.e., high/low-arousal, for the same (...)

    Moral Psychology and the Unity of Morality.James G. Quigley - 2015 - Utilitas 27 (2):119-146.
Jonathan Haidt's research on moral cognition has revealed that political liberals moralize mostly in terms of Harm and Fairness, whereas conservatives moralize in terms of those plus loyalty to Ingroup, respect for Authority, and Purity. Some have concluded that the norms of morality encompass a wide variety of subject matters with no deep unity. To the contrary, I argue that the conservative position is partially debunked by its own lights. IAP norms’ moral relevance depends on their tendency to promote welfare. (...)

Keeping your vascular integrity: What can we learn from fish?Aernout Luttun & Peter Verhamme - 2008 - Bioessays 30 (5):418-422.
The cardiovascular system has the life‐providing task of delivering oxygen and any flaw in this system can be life‐threatening. This has encouraged extensive studies to elucidate the mechanisms behind cardiovascular development/homeostasis. The zebrafish has emerged as a formidable tool to speed up this quest, as illustrated in a recent issue of Nature Genetics.1 Baculovirus IAP repeat c2 (BIRC2), also termed cellular inhibitor of apoptosis (cIAP)‐1, was found to specifically prevent endothelial cells (ECs, lining the inside of vessels) from going into (...)

ERP differences between violence, erotic, pleasant, unpleasant and neutral images.Kunaharan Sajeev & Walla Peter - 2015 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9.
Introduction: There have been many concerns made about the non-conscious impact of exposure to violence and pornography. In our modern society where access to these stimuli is ubiquitous, the desire to investigate whether these concerns are apt is paramount. In the present Electroencephalography (EEG) study, baseline brain activity measures related to violent, erotic, pleasant, unpleasant and neutral images were taken, analysed and are shown. This forms the basis for further EEG measures related to those images after controlled exposure to violence (...)

    Mitochondria—the suicide organelles.Karine F. Ferri & Guido Kroemer - 2001 - Bioessays 23 (2):111-115.
One of the near-to-invariant hallmarks of early apoptosis (programmed cell death) is mitochondrial membrane permeabilization (MMP). It appears that mitochondria fulfill a dual role during the apoptotic process. On the one hand, they integrate multiple different pro-apoptotic signal transducing cascades into a common pathway initiated by MMP. On the other hand, they coordinate the catabolic reactions accompanying late apoptosis by releasing soluble proteins that are normally sequestered within the intermembrane space. In a recent study,(1) Li et al. described a nuclear (...)

    On Emad Atiq’s Inclusive Anti-positivism.Kara Woodbury-Smith - 2021 - Journal of Ethics and Social Philosophy 20 (2).
In this discussion of Emad Atiq's article "There are No Easy Counterexamples to Legal Anti-Positivism" I pose three challenges to his construction of an Inclusive Anti-positivism. I firstly argue that, contra Atiq, the moral facts that both ground IAP and allow it to satisfy the extensional challenge are sometimes reducible to social facts. In Section II, I briefly discuss internal- and external-to-practice appraisals of legal norms. Finally, in Section III, I touch upon the divergent explanations of legal normativity IAP and (...)

Mood-dependent retrieval in visual long-term memory: dissociable effects on retrieval probability and mnemonic precision.Weizhen Xie & Weiwei Zhang - 2017 - Cognition and Emotion 32 (4):674-690.
Although memories are more retrievable if observers’ emotional states are consistent between encoding and retrieval, it is unclear whether the consistency of emotional states increases the likelihood of successful memory retrieval, the precision of retrieved memories, or both. The present study tested visual long-term memory for everyday objects while consistent or inconsistent emotional contexts between encoding and retrieval were induced using background grey-scale images from the International Affective Picture System. In the study phase, participants remembered colours of sequentially presented objects (...)
