A Comparison of Human and Computational Melody Prediction Through Familiarity and Expertise.Matevž Pesek, Špela Medvešek, Anja Podlesek, Marko Tkalčič & Matija Marolt - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
Melody prediction is an important aspect of music listening. The success of prediction, i.e., whether the next note played in a song is the same as the one predicted by the listener, depends on various factors. In the paper, we present two studies, where we assess how music familiarity and music expertise influence melody prediction in human listeners, and, expressed in appropriate data/algorithmic ways, computational models. To gather data on human listeners, we designed a melody prediction user study, where familiarity (...)

Slovenian Validation of the Children’s Perceived Use of Self-Regulated Learning Inventory.Luka Komidar, Anja Podlesek, Tina Pirc, Sonja Pečjak, Katja Depolli Steiner, Melita Puklek Levpušček, Alenka Gril, Bojana Boh Podgornik, Aleš Hladnik, Alenka Kavčič, Ciril Bohak, Žiga Lesar, Matija Marolt, Matevž Pesek & Cirila Peklaj - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
The importance of self-regulated learning has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic and measures for assessing students’ self-regulation skills and knowledge are greatly needed. We present the results of the first thorough adaptation of the Children’s Perceived use of Self-Regulated Learning Inventory. The inventory, consisting of 15 scales measuring nine components of SRL, was administered to a sample of 541 Slovenian ninth graders. Confirmatory factor analyses supported internal structure validity of most components, but two components required some structural modifications. Internal consistency (...)

Vom richtigen Reisen und Beobachten: Ratgeberliteratur für Forschungsreisende nach Übersee im 19. Jahrhundert.Michael Pesek - 2017 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 40 (1):17-38.
How to Travel and Observe: Manuals for Scientific Travelers beyond in the 19th Century. The article deals with manuals for travelers who went to Africa and Asia for the sake of geographic exploration. These are widely neglected sources for the history of European exploration and the emergence of geography as an academic discipline. The article argues that these manuals are essential for an understanding of the travelers’ socialization as members of the scientific project of geography and their contributions to geographical (...)

Living with Corruption in Central and Eastern Europe: Social Identity and the Role of Moral Disengagement.Katalin Takacs Haynes & Matevž Rašković - 2021 - Journal of Business Ethics 174 (4):825-845.
We examine corruption across three Central and Eastern Europe countries through a social psychology framework which integrates social identity theory, social cognitive theory and moral disengagement mechanisms. We illustrate how various social identities influence individual and collective action in terms of ethical behavior and corruption, thereby creating, maintaining and perpetuating petty, grand and systemic public/private corruption through triadic co-determination via cognition, behavior and the environment. Despite growing research on corruption normalization, less is known about the cognitive and behavioral mechanisms in (...)

An Emerging Group of Membrane Property Sensors Controls the Physical State of Organellar Membranes to Maintain Their Identity.Toni Radanović, John Reinhard, Stephanie Ballweg, Kristina Pesek & Robert Ernst - 2018 - Bioessays 40 (5):1700250.
The biological membranes of eukaryotic cells harbor sensitive surveillance systems to establish, sense, and maintain characteristic physicochemical properties that ultimately define organelle identity. They are fundamentally important for membrane homeostasis and play active roles in cellular signaling, protein sorting, and the formation of vesicular carriers. Here, we compare the molecular mechanisms of Mga2 and Ire1, two sensors involved in the regulation of fatty acid desaturation and the response to unfolded proteins and lipid bilayer stress in order to identify their commonalities (...)
