The Relationship Between Uncertainty and Affect.Eric C. Anderson, R. Nicholas Carleton, Michael Diefenbach & Paul K. J. Han - 2019 - Frontiers in Psychology 10:469966.
Uncertainty and affect are fundamental and interrelated aspects of the human condition. Uncertainty is often associated with negative affect, but in some circumstances it is associated with positive affect. In this paper, we review different explanations for the varying relationship between uncertainty and affect. We identify “mental simulation” as a key process that links uncertainty to affective states. We suggest that people have a propensity to simulate negative outcomes, which results in a propensity towards negative affective responses to uncertainty. We (...)

    The Need for Uncertainty: A Case for Prognostic Silence.Paul K. J. Han - 2016 - Perspectives in Biology and Medicine 59 (4):567-575.
No fact in human nature is more characteristic than its willingness to live on a chance. The existence of the chance makes the difference between a life of which the keynote is resignation and a life of which the keynote is hope.Powerful forces are promoting the ideal of prognostic disclosure in endof-life care. Advances in the science of prognostication—ranging from increasingly accurate clinical prediction models to new genomic risk factors—are expanding the supply of prognostic information. Meanwhile, the growing palliative medicine (...)

Brain Responses to Food Odors Associated With BMI Change at 2-Year Follow-Up.Pengfei Han, Hong Chen & Thomas Hummel - 2020 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 14:574148.
The understanding of food cue associated neural activations that predict future weight variability may guide the design of effective prevention programs and treatments for overeating and obesity. The current study investigated the association between brain response to different food odors with varied energy density and individual changes of body mass index (BMI) over two years. Twenty-five participants received high-fat (chocolate and peanut), low-fat (bread and peach) food odors and a nonfood odor (rose) while the brain activation was measured using functional (...)

Cause or Effect? The Role of Prognostic Uncertainty in the Fear of Cancer Recurrence.Paul K. J. Han, Caitlin Gutheil, Rebecca N. Hutchinson & Jason A. LaChance - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
BackgroundFear of cancer recurrence is an important cause of suffering for cancer survivors, and both empirical evidence and theoretical models suggest that prognostic uncertainty plays a causal role in its development. However, the relationship between prognostic uncertainty and FCR is incompletely understood.ObjectiveTo explore the relationship between prognostic uncertainty and FCR among patients with ovarian cancer.DesignA qualitative study was conducted utilizing individual in-depth interviews with a convenience sample of patients with epithelial ovarian cancer who had completed first-line treatment with surgery and/or (...)

Uncertainty in medicine: a framework for tolerance.Paul K. J. Han - 2021 - New York, NY: Oxford University Press.
introduces the topic of medical uncertainty and discusses its importance in human life. It argues that medical uncertainty is a critically important but historically neglected experience of both clinicians and patients, and that COVID-19 pandemic and other recent events have raised the need to better understand and manage it. The chapter makes the case for the value of a conceptual framework in helping clinicians and patients to better understand, manage, and ultimately tolerate the uncertainties they experience, and provides an overview (...)
