Overly Strong Priors for Socially Meaningful Visual Signals Are Linked to Psychosis Proneness in Healthy Individuals.Heiner Stuke, Elisabeth Kress, Veith Andreas Weilnhammer, Philipp Sterzer & Katharina Schmack - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
According to the predictive coding theory of psychosis, hallucinations and delusions are explained by an overweighing of high-level prior expectations relative to sensory information that leads to false perceptions of meaningful signals. However, it is currently unclear whether the hypothesized overweighing of priors represents a pervasive alteration that extends to the visual modality and takes already effect at early automatic processing stages. Here, we addressed these questions by studying visual perception of socially meaningful stimuli in healthy individuals with varying degrees (...)

Not everyone can be a winner, baby: A pragmatist response to problems of contemporary ‘crisis studies’.Veith Selk, Andy Scerri & Dirk Jörke - 2022 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 48 (10):1391-1407.
A growing genre of ‘crisis studies’ traces liberal-democratic instability to technocratic reformism and populist reaction to it. Most contributions recommend restoring economic growth, rebuilding civic culture and eschewing populist ‘us-versus-them’ narratives. This literature relies on a problematic way of thinking we label irenicism, and show to be a contemporary variant of what political realists call progressive moralizing. Irenicism portrays liberal-democracy as the product of voluntary consensus among rational individuals to sustain institutions that, by promoting endless economic growth, support universal interests (...)

Political science in the age of ‘total politics’: concepts of politics and fundamental disciplinary ideas in early West German political science.Veith Selk - 2020 - History of European Ideas 46 (4):420-437.
The paper examines the political ideas of founding figures of West German political science by engaging with formative texts from the post-war period of neo-Aristotelian (Dolf Sternberger and Siegfried Landshut), Critical Theory (Arcadius R.L. Gurland and Franz L. Neumann), ordoliberal (Alexander Rüstow) and catholic (Ferdinand Hermens) perspective. It is argued that these early German political scientists coincided in the diagnosis of living in a thoroughly politicized post-liberal age. They rejected the separation between empirical and normative political science and devised heterogeneous (...)

    Interpolation in fuzzy logic.Matthias Baaz & Helmut Veith - 1999 - Archive for Mathematical Logic 38 (7):461-489.
We investigate interpolation properties of many-valued propositional logics related to continuous t-norms. In case of failure of interpolation, we characterize the minimal interpolating extensions of the languages. For finite-valued logics, we count the number of interpolating extensions by Fibonacci sequences.

The Heidegger Reader.Günter Figal & Jerome Veith (eds.) - 2009 - Indiana University Press.
The Heidegger Reader brings key texts from the entire course of Heidegger’s philosophical career into one volume. Many of the selections, translated here for the first time, offer new insight into Heidegger’s thought for both the beginning student and the experienced scholar. A critical and interpretive introduction by Günter Figal traces the many thematic paths that are necessary for developing a comprehensive understanding of Heidegger’s most important work. The carefully chosen readings are designed to reflect the concerns that are most (...)

Angewandte Ethik Und Film.Thomas Bohrmann, Matthias Reichelt & Werner Veith (eds.) - 2018 - Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden.

    Bettina Bergo: Anxiety – a philosophical history. New York: Oxford University Press, 2021, 514 pp, ISBN: 978-0-19-753971-2. [REVIEW]Jerome Veith - 2022 - Continental Philosophy Review 55 (2):239-243.
This review of Bettina Bergo’s book, Anxiety, draws attention both to the interweaving method of her account and to the substance of its implications. Her evocative historical and textual analyses, I argue, result in a widening conception of the mind that challenges our attempts to locate anxiety merely in the body or in consciousness.

Succinctness as a source of complexity in logical formalisms.Georg Gottlob, Nicola Leone & Helmut Veith - 1999 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 97 (1-3):231-260.
The often observed complexity gap between the expressiveness of a logical formalism and its exponentially harder expression complexity is proven for all logical formalisms which satisfy natural closure conditions. The expression complexity of the prefix classes of second-order logic can thus be located in the corresponding classes of the weak exponential hierarchies; further results about expression complexity in database theory, logic programming, nonmonotonic reasoning, first-order logic with Henkin quantifiers and default logic are concluded. The proof method illustrates the significance of (...)

Gadamer and the Transmission of History.Jerome Veith (ed.) - 2015 - Bloomington: Indiana University Press.
Observing that humans often deal with the past in problematic ways, Jerome Veith looks to philosopher Hans-Georg Gadamer and his hermeneutics to clarify these conceptions of history and to present ways to come to terms with them. Veith fully engages Truth and Method as well as Gadamer's entire work and relationships with other German philosophers, especially Kant, Hegel, and Heidegger in this endeavor. Veith considers questions about language, ethics, cosmopolitanism, patriotism, self-identity, and the status of the humanities (...)

Aesthetics as Phenomenology: The Appearance of Things.Jerome Veith (ed.) - 2015 - Bloomington: Indiana University Press.
Connecting aesthetic experience with our experience of nature or with other cultural artifacts, Aesthetics as Phenomenology focuses on what art means for cognition, recognition, and affect—how art changes our everyday disposition or behavior. Günter Figal engages in a penetrating analysis of the moment at which, in our contemplation of a work of art, reaction and thought confront each other. For those trained in the visual arts and for more casual viewers, Figal unmasks art as a decentering experience that opens further (...)

Concerned with Oneself as One Person.Jerome Veith - 2013 - Epoché: A Journal for the History of Philosophy 18 (1):17-27.
This paper addresses the debate concerning the nature of Aristotelian phronêsis and the objects to which it is directed. After a preparatory distinction from other intellectual virtues, I elucidate phronêsis’s connection to character-virtue and deliberation, highlighting the crucial role of perception. Focusing on moral sensibility serves to underscore the particular nature of the objects of phronêsis, and introduces its aspect of self-knowledge. This determination, finally, helps characterize the project of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics as an indirect education in phronêsis.

When Gadamer speaks of the “unavoidability” or “uncircumventability” [Unhintergehbarkeit] of art,Cf. Hans-Georg Gadamer . there are at least two claims involved: he has in mind both the concrete autonomy of a given artwork—its independence from systems of signification and representation—as well as the crucial importance that art bears for any account of human understanding. Yet even if this central significance remains a distinct concern and peculiar inheritance of the continental philosophical tradition as such, it still remains unclear what it would (...)

A t-tautology is a propositional formula which is a tautology in all fuzzy logics defined by continuous triangular norms. In this paper we show that the problem of recognizing t-tautologies is coNP complete, and thus decidable.
