Practices of Viewing XII: Ending (video essay)

Abstract

The end of a text, the end of a film is like a shore on which the waves of what we just saw can break. When the film is over we remain sitting in the dark so that the reverberations of what we just experienced can fall back on us. The end becomes an agent of resonance. Like a wall from which an echo can bounce back so too a film finds expansion by running out and instead goes on in our own minds. The end is there so the film can continue, individually and indefinitely.
