Abstract

Future electrical distribution systems will experience a mega-scale deployment of distributed energy resources coupled within various forms of microgrids which will be required to be integrated into some ways. Their emerging complex interactions will not only pose a significant challenge in integrating both homogeneous and heterogeneous control solutions but also create an opportunity to optimize their operations as the whole. In this book chapter, emerging control technologies are briefly captured to deal with a high penetration level of renewables in the microgrid. These control methods are based on a hierarchical control framework that allows overlaying control layer to be integrated smoothly with the local control methods. Two examples of using such control strategies in two different demonstration sites in the Netherlands and Slovenia are introduced.
