Dans un célèbre petit volume, Les passions et les intérêts, l’économiste Albert O. Hirschman retrace la formation, aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles, de ce qu’il nomme la « doctrine du doux commerce », qui est constitutive de la pensée libérale et qui fut développée alors « en faveur du libre essor des activités lucratives privées ».
