Abstract
The aim of this essay is to present conditions for the public use of reason amongreligious citizens, based on the Habermas and Ratzinger debate. Habermasexposes the need to overcome the scission between reason and religion inmodernity for a higher order intersubjectivity; a secular sustainability of the State and a complementary motivational role for solidarity in communitiesof an axiological orientation; the preservation of neutrality of the State andthe dual process of apprenticeship among secular and religious persons;the cognitive presuppositions for the “public use of reason” of secular andreligious citizens; and the meaning of a post-secular society. As for Ratzinger,he places himself in a new performative understanding of the relationshipbetween faith, philosophy and theology in the great dialogue on historicalwisdom, providing: a proposal to broaden the horizons of reason; and therecognition of the secular State with participation of religious and secularcitizens in intercultural debate. He speculates upon on the latter’s task toplace power at the service of the rule of law and law at the service of justiceby the democratic shaping of the will, regulated by human rights, as thenecessary conditions to keep the common good active for persons who arepart of the social community. As such, the cognitive presuppositions for theuse of reason among secular and religious citizens can be ascertained inHabermas and in Ratzinger’s thought
