Understanding the relationship between farmers and burrowing mammals on South African farms: are burrowers friends or foes?Izak B. Foster, Trevor McIntyre & Natalie S. Haussmann - 2019 - Agriculture and Human Values 36 (4):719-731.
Burrowing mammals are ubiquitous on farms in South Africa and can hinder agricultural practices. This study explored farmer perspectives of these species, and specifically the factors that influence these perspectives. Forty-four farmers responded to a questionnaire that assessed their ecological knowledge of, tolerance towards and lethal management of burrowing mammals that occur on their farms. The results from generalised linear models showed that neither farmer age, nor level of education are accurate predictors of ecological knowledge, overall tolerance towards burrowers, or (...)

  2. Structures of the Sense of Self: Attributes and qualities that are necessary for the ‘self’.Izak Tait - forthcoming - Symposion: Theoretical and Applied Inquiries in Philosophy and Social Sciences.
The “self” does not exist within a vacuum. For an entity to be considered to have a sense of self, it requires certain characteristics and attributes. This paper investigates these “structures” of the sense of self in detail, which range from a unified consciousness to self-awareness to personal identity. The paper details how each attribute and characteristic is strictly necessary for an entity to be classified as having a self, and how the five structures detailed within may be used as (...)

Building the Blocks of Being: The Attributes and Qualities Required for Consciousness.Izak Tait, Joshua Bensemann & Trung Nguyen - 2023 - Philosophies 8 (4):52.
For consciousness to exist, an entity must have prerequisite characteristics and attributes to give rise to it. We explore these “building blocks” of consciousness in detail in this paper, which range from perceptive to computational to meta-representational characteristics of an entity’s cognitive architecture. We show how each cognitive attribute is strictly necessary for the emergence of consciousness, and how the building blocks may be used for any entity to be classified as being conscious. The list of building blocks is not (...)

Untold Stories in Organizations.Michal Izak, Linda Hitchin & David Anderson (eds.) - 2015 - Routledge Studies in Management, Organizations and Society.
The field of organizational storytelling research is productive, vibrant and diverse. Over three decades we have come to understand how organizations are not only full of stories but also how stories are actively making, sustaining and changing organizations. This edited collection contributes to this body of work by paying specific attention to stories that are neglected, edited out, unintentionally omitted or deliberately left silent. Despite the fact that such stories are not voiced they have a role to play in organizational (...)

Do Androids Dread an Electric Sting?Izak Tait & Neşet Tan - 2023 - Qeios 1:1-18.
Conscious sentient AI seems to be all but a certainty in our future, whether in fifty years’ time or only five years. When that time comes, we will be faced with entities with the potential to experience more pain and suffering than any other living entity on Earth. In this paper, we look at this potential for suffering and the reasons why we would need to create a framework for protecting artificial entities. We look to current animal welfare laws and (...)

Forgetting the Bicentennial Man.Izak Tait, Ziqi Wang, Tahua O'Leary & Paul Corballis - 2022 - Journal of Artificial Intelligence and Consciousness:1-20.
The established theories and frameworks on consciousness in the academic literature as related to artificial intelligence (AI), are rooted in anthropocentricism. Even those theories created intentionally for AI are based on the levels of consciousness as it is understood in humans primarily, and in other animals secondarily. This paper will discuss why such anthropocentric frameworks are built on unsecure foundations. We will do this by comparing the capacities and functions of human and AI cognitive architectures, discussing the ramifications and consequences (...)

Richard Dawkins, Philip Kennedy and the Augustinian paradigm of Christianity.Izak J. J. Spangenberg - 2019 - HTS Theological Studies 75 (3).
Both Richard Dawkins’s book The God Delusion and Philip Kennedy’s book A Modern Introduction to Theology: New Questions for Old Beliefs were published in 2006. This article aims to compare the two books and to argue that Kennedy does not oppose Dawkins’s views but, in fact, debates along similar lines. Kennedy is adamant that the Augustinian paradigm of Christianity no longer makes sense, because it is based on an outdated cosmology and anthropology. He firmly maintains that Christianity requires a new (...)

The religious roots of racism in the Western world: A brief historical overview.Izak J. J. Spangenberg - 2019 - HTS Theological Studies 75 (1).
Racism is again a burning issue in our country. One may define racism as the conviction that not all humans are equal, but that some are ‘worthier’ than others. Usually those who are regarded as ‘unworthy humans’ are not treated on par with the rest. The ‘othering’ of humans in the Western world did not commence in the 16th, 17th, 18th or 19th centuries. It is argued that the roots of racism in the Western world date back to the 1st (...)

The relationship between moral intervention strategies and the stigmatisation of people living with HIV – A Christian perspective.Izak J. Van der Walt & Jacobus M. Vorster - 2016 - HTS Theological Studies 72 (3).
One of the ways in which sexual transmission of AIDS is addressed is through moral interventions by organisations affiliated with Christian churches. However, this approach has been heavily criticised in recent literature, implying that moral interventions by church-affiliated organisations generally lead to stigmatisation which is one of the major obstacles to their involvement in HIV prevention. This article explores the origin of this accusation and discusses the Christian-ethical aspects related to HIV or AIDS. The conclusion is that the fact that (...)
