Montesquieu hypothesis and football: players from hot countries are more expressive after scoring a goal.P. Szarota, I. E. Onyishi, A. Sorokowska & P. Sorokowski - 2013 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 44 (4):421-430.
Analysis of sportsmen behavior enabled the authors to conduct simultaneous analysis of emotional expression of people from many distinct countries and cultures. In the study, participants from Nigeria and Poland watched all the goals scored in group matches of the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups and assessed the emotions players expressed after scoring each goal on three scales. Based on the assessment of the participants, emotional expression of football players from 51 countries was analyzed. Basing on “Montesquieu hypothesis”, it (...)

    If I want to perform better, then how should I feel?Andrew M. Lane - 2013 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 44 (2):130-136.
Research indicates that emotions are predictive of sports performance. The application of emotion research to practice is that intervention strategies can be used to change emotions to enhance performance. The present study examined emotional profiles associated with successful performance. A review of studies indicate that there are general trends, that is, high activation emotions such as excitement and vigor tend to associate with good performance and low activation unpleasant emotions such as depression and dejection tend to associate with poor performance. You are so kind – and I am kind and smart: Actor – Observer Differences in the Interpretation of On-going Behavior.Bogdan Wojciszke, Susanne Bruckmüller & Andrea E. Abele - 2014 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 45 (4):394-401.
: The dual perspective model of agency and communion predicts that observers tend to interpret a target’s behavior more in terms of communion than agency, whereas actors interpret their behavior more in terms of agency. The present research for the first time tests this model in real interactions. Previously unacquainted participants had a short conversation and afterwards rated their own behavior and their interaction partner’s behavior in terms of agency and communion. Supporting the dual perspective model, observers rated the actor’s (...)

Whether you are smart or kind depends on how I feel: The influence of positive and negative mood on agency and communion perception.Aleksandra Szymkow - 2014 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 45 (4):434-443.
Feelings-as-information theory states that feelings inform us about the nature of our current situation and we rely on them to make our judgments. Beyond that, feelings tune our cognitive processes to meet situational requirements. Positive feelings result in relying on pre-existing knowledge structures and default strategies, whereas negative feelings hamper relying on routines and results in adapting systematic processing. Based on this premise, it was hypothesized that positive mood, elicited either by the perceived target or by the independent source, would (...)

The Outline of Selected Marital Satisfaction Factors in the Intercultural Couples based on the Westerner and non-Westerner relationships.Katarzyna Waszyńska, Jeremy Wong Jia Yang, Gabriel Lum Wei Han, Daniel Tan Wen Siang, Atifa Bte Othman & Dariusz P. Skowroński - 2014 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 45 (3):346-356.
The paper investigates the various factors from a socio-cultural perspective that have a bearing on the intercultural couple’s marital satisfaction in Westerner and non-Westerner relationships, and how cultural differences may potentially amplify the difficulties, which non-intercultural couples themselves are already likely to face. These factors include acculturation, language and communication, attitudes toward marriage, individual traits and behaviours, support of the family, societal views, gender roles, managing of the household finances and child rearing. Certain theories are also highlighted in an attempt (...)

    From Readiness to Action: How Motivation Works.Noa Schori-Eyal, Marina Chernikova & Arie W. Kruglanski - 2014 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 45 (3):259-267.
We present a new theoretical construct labeled motivational readiness. It is defined as the inclination, whether or not ultimately implemented, to satisfy a desire. A general model of readiness is described which builds on the work of prior theories, including animal learning models and personality approaches, and which aims to integrate a variety of research findings across different domains of motivational research. Components of this model include the Want state, and the Expectancy of being able to satisfy that Want. We (...)

Previous research examining the relationship between religion and attitudes about death have yielded mixed results due to over-simplified conceptualizations of constructs, lack of theory, and an over-reliance on Western samples. To overcome these issues, the present study examined the relationship between three types of religious orientation and two types of death attitudes among a sample of 532 college students in Poland. The results demonstrated unique relations between religion and death attitudes, as well emphasized the importance of considering religious engagement as (...)

Emotional Labour and Indirectly Measured Attitude Towards Occupation in Explaining Employee Well-Being.Aleksandra Fila–Jankowska & Sylwiusz Retowski - 2013 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 44 (2):165-175.
Drawing on the model of Grandey, it was proposed that the attitude towards occupation could buffer the negative effects of emotional labour. A total of 173 teachers participated in the study. Attitudes towards occupation, surface acting, emotional exhaustion and job satisfaction were estimated. The indirect measure of the attitude towards occupation was assessed using the Approaching-Avoidance Simulation Method. Confirmatory Factor Analysis proved the validity and reliability of the indirect measurement, which is based on uncontrolled reactions of the respondents towards stimuli (...)

The sample comprised of 240 older adults approaching or of retirement age; aged 55-70. Subjective health was negatively associated with neuroticism and positively associated with extraversion and openness to experiences. Multiple mediation analyses indicated that personal resources mediated most of the analyzed associations between personality and subjective health. For conscientiousness suppressive effects were found.

Psychological consequences of money and money attitudes in dictator game.Anna Hełka & Agata Gąsiorowska - 2012 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 43 (1):20-26.
Psychological consequences of money and money attitudes in dictator game According to the research conducted by Vohs, Mead, and Goode, reminders of money cause people to behave self-sufficiently, and especially to reveal a reduced tendency to charitable behaviour. In this study, we wanted to establish if this tendency would be present in the dictator game, and if so, whether money activation would just change behaviour, or whether it would also change people's evaluation of their own decisions. We assumed that people (...)

Introducing Emotioncy as an Invisible Force Controlling Causal Decisions: A Case of Attribution Theory.Hannaneh Abbasnejad & Reza Pishghadam - 2017 - Polish Psychological Bulletin 48 (1):129-140.
Given the prominence of studies aimed at determining the factors influencing causal judgments, this study attempts to introduce the newly-developed concept of emotioncy as one of the guiding factors pushing attribution judgments toward a certain spectrum. To this end, two scales of attribution and emotioncy were designed using ten hypothetical situations. A total number of 309 participants filled out the scales. The construct validity of the scales was substantiated through confirmatory factor analysis. Afterwards, structural equation modeling was utilized to examine (...)

Two hypotheses concerning the relative importance of agentic versus communal traits as predictors of selfesteem were tested. The perspective hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by agency over communion because self-perceptions are formed from the agent perspective. The culture hypothesis assumed that self-esteem is dominated by communal concerns in collectivistic cultures and by agentic concerns in individualistic cultures. Study 1 involving three samples from collectivistic countries and three from individualistic ones found that self-esteem was better predicted from self-ratings of agentic (...)
