Em 1933, o Governo Provisório liderado por Getúlio Vargas criou o Conselho de Fiscalização das Expedições Artísticas e Científicas no Brasil, com o objetivo de coibir a saída do país de objetos de seu patrimônio natural e artístico e garantir uma parte do que fosse coletado no país para as instituições brasileiras. Num momento de aproximação do Brasil com os Estados Unidos, que competia com a Alemanha por influência no país mesmo antes da eclosão da Segunda Guerra, cientistas e outros (...) exploradores norte-americanos realizaram expedições para coleta de animais e outros objetos naturais, que foram exportados para enriquecer as coleções de museus e outras instituições científicas nos Estados Unidos. Nesse contexto, o Conselho não cumpriu propriamente seu trabalho de fiscalização. Em parte, isso ocorreu em benefício das relações diplomáticas com os norte-americanos; por outro lado, por interesses particulares e disputas institucionais que impediam o pleno exercício de suas funções. Ambos os fatores impediram um trânsito de conhecimento maior entre os dois países, como a incorporação de mais animais às coleções nacionais e um contato maior entre cientistas dos dois países. Além disso, caçadores e colecionadores usaram justificativas científicas para levar um sem-número de animais para o exterior. Os casos analisados neste trabalho demonstram como, mesmo um governo autoritário de inspiração nacionalista, não deu conta de impedir o afluxo de objetos do patrimônio natural para um país aliado. A tese busca mostrar, ainda, como as fronteiras entre caça e ciência eram borradas no período e como isso se refletiu na fiscalização do CFE. (shrink)

Current work in language models (LMs) helps us speed up or even skip thinking by accelerating and automating cognitive work. But can LMs help us with critical thinking -- thinking in deeper, more reflective ways which challenge assumptions, clarify ideas, and engineer new concepts? We treat philosophy as a case study in critical thinking, and interview 21 professional philosophers about how they engage in critical thinking and on their experiences with LMs. We find that philosophers do not find LMs to (...) be useful because they lack a sense of selfhood (memory, beliefs, consistency) and initiative (curiosity, proactivity). We propose the selfhood-initiative model for critical thinking tools to characterize this gap. Using the model, we formulate three roles LMs could play as critical thinking tools: the Interlocutor, the Monitor, and the Respondent. We hope that our work inspires LM researchers to further develop LMs as critical thinking tools and philosophers and other 'critical thinkers' to imagine intellectually substantive uses of LMs. (shrink)

Drawing on recent findings, this study examines whether valence concordant electromyography (EMG) responses can be explained as an unconditional effect of mere stimulus processing or as somatosensory simulation driven by task-dependent processing strategies. While facial EMG over the Corrugator supercilii and the Zygomaticus major was measured, each participant performed two tasks with pictures of album covers. One task was an affective evaluation task and the other was to attribute the album covers to one of five decades. The Embodied Emotion Account (...) predicts that valence concordant EMG is more likely to occur if the task necessitates a somatosensory simulation of the evaluative meaning of stimuli. Results support this prediction with regard to Corrugator supercilii in that valence concordant EMG activity was only present in the affective evaluation task but not in the non-evaluative task. Results for the Zygomaticus major were ambiguous. Our findings are in line with the view that EMG activity is an embodied part of the evaluation process and not a mere physical outcome. (shrink)

O presente trabalho traz um estudo do perfil dos 417 prefeitos eleitos no estado da Bahia nas eleições de 2016 pelos critérios de cor/raça e gênero. A partir desta definição, busca compreender qual o compromisso que os partidos políticos vitoriosos têm com a agenda antirracista e de igualdade de gênero de modo a compreender se mulheres e homens negros têm à disposição conteúdo propositivo dos partidos que apoiem pautas defendidas pelo movimento Negro e Feminista. A análise dos dados revela que (...) a Bahia é governada majoritariamente por homens, e brancos lideram a corrida de forma desproporcional já que sequer correspondem a 20% da população do estado. Por outro lado, a participação de mulheres e homens negros, apesar de representarem maioria dos eleitos, não significa corresponder automaticamente a uma associação objetiva da pauta antirracista e de igualdade de gênero dada às vinculações partidárias que escolheram. Luego, presento una reflexión sobre la reconstrucción de la experiencia personal durante el relato (y el papel que juega la memoria en dicho proceso), que culmina con la incorporación del mito, como forma de configurar la narración desde un saber (...) colectivo de gran plasticidad. The article explores the considerations of Nietzsche on the Renaissance painter Raphael Sanzio, who are rare in the set of the work of the philosopher, however permeates all the phases of his intellectual development process. The approach, more often than is positive, with remnants of censorship with respect to the artist’s timidity in promoting a transvaluation of Christianity, which sounds as a certain ambiguity. The most fruitful moment of the approach occurs in the intermediate period, in which Nietzsche values the (...) Para 0 proposto, considerarei duas questões que me parecem essenciais nessa estrutura, seu início e o seu fim. No que diz respeito à primeira questáo, (A) veremos o quanto é problemática a generalizaçáo da tese, de que há uma estrutura ontoteológica na história da metafisica desde Aristóteles, pois náo é táo simples detectar o seu início, ou seja, quando começa, (...) de fato, ontoteologia? Teria sido com o pensamento clássico grego, mais especificamente com Aristóteles, tal como conjectura Heidegger, ou com a Escolástica como pensam alguns medievalistas'. No que se refere à segunda questáo, (B) compararemos a critica de Heidegger e de Nietzsche à metafisica, demonstrando a ideia de Deus como a base de sua essência, considerando-a, particularmente, como ontoteologia -tal como Heidegger a concebe -e demonstraremos que, apesar de tal concepcao ser de inspiracao hegeliana, a matriz critica da qual ela deriva é nietzschiana, pois pressupõe a sua superaçáo. Este artigo tem como objetivo situar o escrito de Nietzsche Also Spracht Zaratustra (ASZ) no contexto de sua obra e conferir-lhe o estatuto de obra principal.

Este artigo tem como pretensão reconstituir o argumento da interpretação crítica de Habermas sobre a filosofia nietzschiana, focando, sobretudo, o posfácio, escrito em 1968, a uma coletânea de textos de Nietzsche sobre teoria do conhecimento. A minha intenção é apresentar a gênese da interpretação, dezessete anos mais tarde, em o Discurso Filosófico da Modernidade, (1985), onde Nietzsche é apontado, por Habermas, como sendo o ponto de inflexão (Drehscheibe) da modernidade, que gerou, dessa forma, “um discurso irracional, metafisicamente desfigurado”, base da (...) pós-modernidade. Porém, como o posfácio é contemporâneo da obra Conhecimento e Interesse, (1968), na qual há um capítulo dedicado a Nietzsche que, em muito o complementa, resolvi utilizar este material com o objetivo de me auxiliar nesta interpretação. Dans ce livre savant et moqueur, Pierre-André Taguieff passe au scalpel l'idéal moderne par excellence, celui d'émancipation, qui exalte, mobilise et aveugle depuis longtemps les Modernes. Le temps est venu de soumettre à un examen critique sans complaisance cette notion qui fait partie du prêt-à-penser dont se sont emparés les utopistes et les démagogues de toutes obédiences. Comment expliquer que cette notion banale ait pu devenir un thème philosophique et politique majeur depuis la fin du XVIIIe siècle, sous la (...) forme du projet universaliste de l'émancipation du genre humain comme sous celle de l'autonomie croissante de l'individu? Colexification refers to the phenomenon of multiple meanings sharing one word in a language. Cross‐linguistic lexification patterns have been shown to be largely predictable, as similar concepts are often colexified. We test a recent claim that, beyond this general tendency, communicative needs play an important role in shaping colexification patterns. We approach this question by means of a series of human experiments, using an artificial language communication game paradigm. Our results across four experiments match the previous cross‐linguistic findings: all other (...) things being equal, speakers do prefer to colexify similar concepts. However, we also find evidence supporting the communicative need hypothesis: when faced with a frequent need to distinguish similar pairs of meanings, speakadjust their colexification preferences to maintain communicative efficiency and avoid colexifying those similar meanings which need to be distinguished in communication. This research provides further evidence to support the argument that languages are shaped by the needs and preferences of their speakers. (shrink)

Experiences of absence are common in everyday life, but have received little philosophical attention until recently, when two positions regarding the nature of such experiences surfaced in the literature. According to the Perceptual View, experiences of absence are perceptual in nature. This is denied by the Surprise-Based View, according to which experiences of absence belong together with cases of surprise. In this paper, I show that there is a kind of experience of absence—which I call frustrating absences—that has been overlooked (...) by the Perceptual View and by the Surprise Based-View and that cannot be adequately explained by them. I offer an alternative account to deal with frustrating absences, one according to which experiencing frustrating absences is a matter of subjects having desires for something to be present frustrated by the world. Finally, I argue that there may well be different kinds of experiences of absence. (shrink)

Frühgeborene im Grenzbereich der Lebensfähigkeit befinden sich in einer prognostischen Grauzone. Das bedeutet, dass deren Prognose zwar schlecht, aber nicht hoffnungslos ist, woraus folgt, dass nach Geburt lebenserhaltende Behandlungen nicht obligatorisch sind. Die Entscheidung für oder gegen lebenserhaltende Maßnahmen ist wertbeladen und für alle Beteiligten enorm herausfordernd. Sie sollte eine zwischen Eltern und Ärzt*innen geteilte Entscheidung sein, wobei sie unbedingt mit den Präferenzen der Eltern abgestimmt sein sollte. Bei der pränatalen Beratung der Eltern legen die behandelnden Ärzt*innen üblicherweise numerische Schätzungen (...) der Prognose vor und nehmen in der Regel an, dass die Eltern ihre Behandlungspräferenzen davon ableiten. Inwieweit probabilistische Daten die Entscheidungen der Eltern in prognostischen Grauzonen tatsächlich beeinflussen, ist noch unzureichend untersucht. In der hier vorliegenden Arbeit wird eine Studie reflektiert, in welcher die Hypothese geprüft wurde, dass numerisch bessere oder schlechtere kindliche Prognosen die Präferenzen werdender Mütter für lebenserhaltende Maßnahmen nicht beeinflussen. In dieser Studie zeigte sich, dass die elterlichen Behandlungspräferenzen eher von individuellen Einstellungen und Werten als von Überlegungen zu numerischen Ergebnisschätzungen herzurühren scheinen. Unser Verständnis, welche Informationen werdende Eltern, die mit einer extremen Frühgeburt konfrontiert sind, wünschen und brauchen, ist noch immer unvollständig. Bedeutende medizinische Entscheidungen werden keineswegs nur rational und prognoseorientiert gefällt. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird diskutiert, welchen Einfluss der Prozess der Entscheidungsfindung auf das Beratungsergebnis haben kann und welche Implikationen sich aus den bisher vorliegenden Studienergebnissen ergeben – klinisch-praktisch, ethisch und wissenschaftlich. The interplay between computability and randomness has been an active area of research in recent years, reflected by ample funding in the USA, numerous workshops, and publications on the subject. The complexity and the randomness aspect of a set of natural numbers are closely related. Traditionally, computability theory is concerned with the complexity aspect. However, computability theoretic tools can also be used to introduce mathematical counterparts for the intuitive notion of randomness of a set. Recent research shows that, conversely, concepts (...) and methods originating from randomness enrich computability theory.The book covers topics such as lowness and highness properties, Kolmogorov complexity, betting strategies and higher computability. Both the basics and recent research results are desribed, providing a very readable introduction to the exciting interface of computability and randomness for graduates and researchers in computability theory, theoretical computer science, and measure theory. This paper intends to recover the “phenomenological” basis of Sartre’s trajectory since his very first reception of Edmund Husserl’s and Martin Heidegger’s philosophies until the moment in which the main synthesis of his existentialism is published, entitled Being and Nothingness (1943). In this sense, the paper situates the status of Husserl’s and Heidegger’s phenomenologies for Sartrean thought, as well as the originality of Being and Nothingness, which is also influenced by a very particular interpretation of Hegelian negation.
