Das Wissen um den Akt des Sterbens, der stets mit einer Form der Verwandlung oder Transformation des leiblichen Körpers in der Phase des „Danach“ einhergeht, beschert, so die These, der Menschheit seit jeher einen grenzenlosen Raum und kann womöglich als Ursprung jeglichen kulturellen und ästhetischen Ausdrucks gelten. Das „Danach“ bietet aufgrund seiner Dimension des „Nichtwissens“ eine größtmögliche Freiheit an Spekulationen. Der Artikel geht dieser Freiheit nach und beschreibt zunächst die vielfältigen religiösen und politischen Versuche, sie zugunsten der Stärkung eigener Macht (...) und Deutungshoheit zu beschränken. Sodann widmet er sich dem Potenzial künstlerischen, ästhetischen und kulturellen Schaffens, dem Nichtwissen einen Raum zu geben. Gegenwärtig stellt sich jedoch wie Frage, wie die „Freiheit der Kunst“ einerseits geschützt und andererseits ein verantwortungsvoller Umgang mit ihr garantiert werden kann. Dem Paradoxon zwischen ästhetischer Grenzenlosigkeit und gesellschaftlicher Einschränkung kann, so die These, allein das Wissen über das Nichtwissen des „Danach“ begegnen. Mehr noch, es vermag eine für heutige Herausforderungen vielversprechende Wirkmacht zu entfalten, die abschließend anhand von vier kulturpolitischen Prämissen vorgestellt wird. (shrink)

Für den Umgang mit und die Reflexion von Krisen spielen Künste und Kulturen seit jeher eine Rolle. Der Beitrag geht anhand unterschiedlicher internationaler künstlerischer und ästhetischer Beispiele den kulturpolitischen Ebenen und Wirkungsweisen dieses Vermögens nach. Welche Rhythmen der Vorahnung einer Krise können Künste hervorbringen? Ist Kunst- und Kulturschaffen systemrelevant oder gar lebensnotwendig, da es dem Angesicht des Todes begegnen kann? Auf welche Art und Weise vermag Kunst- und Kulturschaffen das gemeinschaftsstiftende und partizipative Potential im verantwortungsvollen Umgang mit Krisen zu fördern? (...) Wo droht es in kollektiv inszeniertes Selbstmitleid abzurutschen, in welchem sich jede*r die und der Nächste ist oder in einer kollektiven Masse der Wütenden aufgeht? Zu guter Letzt stellt sich die Frage, welche kulturpolitischen Schlussfolgerungen aus den Krisenmonaten gezogen werden können, um gesellschaftliche und kulturelle Resilienz zukünftig zu stärken. Salience reasoning, many have argued, can help solve coordination problems, but only if such reasoning is supplemented by higher-order predictions, e.g. beliefs about what others believe yet others will choose. In this paper, I will argue that this line of reasoning is self-undermining. Higher-order behavioral predictions defeat salience-based behavioral predictions. To anchor my argument in the philosophical literature, I will develop it in response and opposition to the popular Lewisian model of salience reasoning in coordination games. This model imports the (...) problematic higher-order beliefs by way of a ‘symmetric reasoning’ constraint. In the second part of this paper, I will argue that a player may employ salience reasoning only if she suspends judgment about what others believe yet others will do. (shrink)

I first characterize a moral mistake in coercion. The principle of independence with which I criticize coercion seems also to condemn exchange. I propose an account of exchange from which it follows that exchange upholds independence after all. In support of that account I argue that, of the accounts of exchange that occur to me, only this one has the consequence that, on general assumptions, a person can take part in exchange while acting, intending, and believing with sufficient reason. I (...) argue that the hiring of very poor people by very rich people for labor from which the rich draw a substantial surplus does not give rise to an exchange of this kind. These instances of the wage labor relation resemble coercion insofar as they violate independence. (shrink)

In this paper, I argue that joint action permits a certain degree of luck. The cases I have in mind exhibit the following structure: each participant believes that the intended ends of each robustly support the joint action. This belief turns out to be false. Due to lucky circumstances, the discordance in intention never becomes common knowledge. However, common knowledge of the relevant intentions would have undermined the joint action altogether. The analysis of such cases shows the extent to which (...) common knowledge of the participants’ intentions can be harmful to joint action. This extends a recent line of research that has questioned the necessity of common knowledge in joint action. (shrink)

In Plato's Theaetetus Socrates is portrayed as a midwife of the intellect. The comparison of Socratic questioning to midwifery had until recently been commonly attributed to Socrates himself. In 1977 M. F. Burnyeat published Socratic Midwifery, Platonic Inspiration, which transformed the way in which the dialogue has since been perceived. The author maintains that the midwife comparison is in no sense to be attributed to the historical Socrates.

The increasing prevalence of ecologically sustainable products in consumer markets, such as organic produce, are generally assumed to curtail anthropogenic impacts on the environment. Here I intend to present an alternative perspective on sustainable production by interpreting the relationship between recent rises in organic agriculture and greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural production. I construct two time series fixed-effects panel regressions to estimate how increases in organic farmland impact greenhouse gas emissions derived from agricultural production. My analysis finds that the rise (...) of certified organic production in the United States is not correlated with declines in greenhouse gas emissions derived specifically from agricultural production, and on the contrary is associated positively overall agricultural greenhouse gas emissions. To make sense of this finding, I embed my research within the conventionalization thesis. As a result I argue that the recent USDA certification of organic farming has generated a bifurcated organic market, where one form of organic farming works as a sustainable counterforce to conventional agriculture and the other works to increase the economic accessibility of organic farming through weakening practice standards most conducive to reducing agricultural greenhouse gas output. Additionally, I construct my own theoretical framework known as the displacement paradox to further interpret my findings. (shrink)

Morality is often thought of as non-rational or sub-rational. In Moral Notions, first published in 1967, Julius Kovesi argues that the rationality of morality is built into the way we construct moral concepts. In showing this he also resolves the old Humean conundrum of the relation between 'facts' and 'values'. And he puts forward a method of reasoning that might make 'applied ethics' (at present largely a hodge-podge of opinions) into a constructive discipline. Kovesi's general theory of concepts - (...) important in its own right - is indebted to his interpretation of Plato, and his three papers on Plato, first published here, explain this debt. This new edition of Moral Notions also includes a foreward by Philippa Foot, a biography of the author, and a substantial afterword in which the editors, Robert Ewin and Alan Tapper, explain the signficance of Kovesi's work. Moral rights feature prominently and are relied on substantially in debates in bioethics. Conceptually, however, duties can perform the logical work of rights, but not vice versa, and reference to rights is therefore inessential. Normatively, rights, like duties, depend on more basic moral values or principles, and attempts to establish the logical priority of rights over duties or the reverse are misguided. In practical decision making, however, an analysis in terms of duties is more fruitful than one based on rights. (...) A right may function as a proxy term for a consequentialist rule, or for a deontological constraint, but does not thereby enrich these concepts. Rights may also help in a purely expressive sense and may assist an initial focusing on a moral conflict. However, their role in bioethics discourse is more one of convenience than of necessity. Moreover, unless rights are firmly founded on fundamental moral values, their use encourages rhetoric rather than argument. (shrink)

Theories that treat Artistic Research (AR) as their object have been experiencing a boom since the beginning of the 21st century. Increased interest in AR resulted from a historical situation interconnecting at least three fields. First, the art world, which, starting in the 90s, produced AR as a phenomenon in the first place; second, higher education policy, which, in the implementation discussions concerning the Bologna reforms from the 90s onwards, drew on reflections on AR; and third, Germanophone aesthetics, which, during (...) the 2000s, paid increased attention to heteronomy aesthetics. Within these fields, multiple factors are to be accounted for to understand both the sudden increase in pertinence as well as the concrete shape that these theories took in the Germanophone sphere. Each of two mutually recognising persons knows herself to be capable of and responsible for acting toward the other in ways that presuppose the other’s capability and responsibility for doing the same. The lecture brings out some egalitarian, libertarian and solidaristic aspects of an interpersonal ideal of mutual recognition, and it considers conversation, friendship and respect for right as three main examples of the syndrome.
