A history of colonization inflicts psychological, physical, and structural disadvantages that endure across generations. For an increasing number of Indigenous Australians, environmental epigenetics offers an important explanatory framework that links the social past with the biological present, providing a culturally relevant way of understanding the various intergenerational effects of historical trauma. In this paper, we critically examine the strategic uptake of environmental epigenetics by Indigenous researchers and policy advocates. We focus on the relationship between epigenetic processes and Indigenous views of (...) Country and health—views that locate health not in individual bodies but within relational contexts of Indigenous ontologies that embody interconnected environments of kin/animals/matter/bodies across time and space. This drawing together of Indigenous experience and epigenetic knowledge has strengthened calls for action including state-supported calls for financial reparations. We examine the consequences of this reimagining of disease responsibility in the context of “strategic biological essentialism,” a distinct form of biopolitics that, in this case, incorporates environmental determinism. We conclude that the shaping of the right to protection from biosocial injury is potentially empowering but also has the capacity to conceal forms of governance through claimants’ identification as “damaged,” thus furthering State justification of biopolitical intervention in Indigenous lives. Environmental epigenetics is increasingly employed to understand the health outcomes of communities who have experienced historical trauma and structural violence. Epigenetics provides a way to think about traumatic events and sustained deprivation as biological “exposures” that contribute to ill-health across generations. In Australia, some Indigenous researchers and clinicians are embracing epigenetic science as a framework for theorising the slow violence of colonialism as it plays out in intergenerational legacies of trauma and illness. However, there is dispute, contention, and caution as (...) well as enthusiasm among these research communities.In this article, we trace strategies of “refusal” (Simpson, 2014) in response to epigenetics in Indigenous contexts. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Australia with researchers and clinicians in Indigenous health, we explore how some construct epigenetics as useless knowledge and a distraction from implementing anti-colonial change, rather than a tool with which to enact change. Secondly, we explore how epigenetics narrows definitions of colonial harm through the optic of molecular trauma, reproducing conditions in which Indigenous people are made intelligible through a lens of “damaged” bodies. Faced with these two concerns, many turn away from epigenetics altogether, refusing its novelty and supposed benefit for Indigenous health equity and resisting the pull of postgenomics. (shrink)

This article explores a theoretical legacy that underpins the ways in which many social scientists come to know and understand obesity. In attempting to distance itself from essentialist discourses, it is not surprising that this literature focuses on the discursive construction of fat bodies rather than the materiality or agency of bodily matter. Ironically, in developing arguments that only critique representations of obesity or fat bodies, social science scholars have maintained and reproduced a central dichotomy of Cartesian thinking – that (...) between social construction and biology. In this article I examine the limitations of social constructionist arguments in obesity/critical fat studies and the implications for ignoring materiality. Through bringing together the theoretical insights of material feminism and obesity science’s attention to maternal nutrition and the fetal origins hypothesis, this article moves beyond the current philosophical impasse, and repositions biological and social constructionist approaches to obesity not as mutually exclusive, but as one of constant interplay and connectedness. Developmental origins of health and disease and epigenetics have expanded understanding of how the environment affects the health of women before and during pregnancy—with lifelong health consequences for the fetus. This has translated to a narrow focus on women’s lifestyle during pregnancy, especially for women classified as obese. In this study, we show that psychosocial harms such as distress or shame felt by pregnant women are rarely countenanced in these endeavors. To demonstrate this, we examine published documents about a large (...) set of trials of lifestyle interventions united through an international consortium. Yet there is now a literature in which pregnant women with large bodies report feeling humiliated and a wider literature on the stigma of obesity. We argue that shame is produced and reproduced through the discursive and material knowledge-making scientific practices of DOHaD translation. Interventions that intensify the shame of large body size in pregnancy may be stressful, and neurophysiological stress pathways are well-known within DOHaD to have consequences for fetal development, so these interventions potentially undermine the very processes they set out to protect. A feminist response may protect women from shame and redirect attention to the social and structural determinants of health. (shrink)

When dealing with the moving worlds of migration among the Persian diaspora in Australia, memories cannot simply be removed to dusty attic boxes to be stored as an archive. Rather, this analysis takes the body and its sensory engagement with the world as a central focus, arguing that memories are crafted, tasted, smelt and touched in everyday temporalities. In the kitchens and lounges of Persian migrant women the lived past refuses to become undone from the countless revolutions of food, talk (...) and domestic activity that are central to the patterning of memory. In this paper, we argue that these intimate practices have references beyond their domestic dimensions, for they point to a worldly movement of life writ domestically small. It is via a sensory network that the spatially and temporally disparate worlds of homeland and new homes are remembered and forgotten, and where miniature worlds call out to the movement of migration. In fighting against German essentialism, he found himself in a position that necessitated the abandonment of either his presupposed anti-essentialism, or his critique of the positivists. Oui, malgré le travail de déconstruction de la pensée « postcoloniale », on peut encore parler de pensée « orientale ». Comme une gageure et un défi supplémentaire, nous avons pris comme miroir d’un monde une chose, un petit rien, une technique très ancienne, un art de la terre portant le nom de « raku », art né à la croisée de plusieurs traditions du monde oriental. Par bien des aspects, cet art se distingue fondamentalement des caractères que nous attribuons (...) à notre « Occident ». This article explores the circulation of #MyBodyMyChoice in a series of deeply divisive political debates – abortion rights and mask wearing during COVID-19. We trace the appropriation of this slogan for differing ideological purposes, and its shifts from collective political action concerning pro-choice to the rights of individuals to refuse to comply with mask mandates. Underpinning the values of each is a white liberal racism that operates to uphold dominant gender, class and economic structures.

With the rise of ‘globesity’, fat activism and Fat Studies have become political players in countering negative stereotypes and the devaluation of fat bodies. Both groups are diverse, yet share a common goal to celebrate and/or accept fatness, and challenge practices and discourses that reinforce ‘normal’ bodies (such as diets, ‘fat talk’ and medicalisation). In this article, we reflect on our engagement with a Fat Studies conference, and critically interrogate the assumptions that underlie this particular space. It is not surprising (...) that fat activists and Fat Studies scholars bring different ideologies to the table, yet the differences between them have not been adequately scrutinised or theorised. Drawing upon Linda Alcoff’s feminist philosophy, we examine how identity politics and intersectional perspectives are both used in fat activism, yet have the effect of creating unresolved tensions between singular and multiple embodied identities. We argue that an identity politics approach (exemplified through embodied visibility and declarations of ‘thin privilege’) has the potential to create boundaries for policing and exclusion, and is thus at odds with the much broader axes identified by intersectorial approaches. Rather than dismiss the power of identity politics, we argue for a careful reframing of the relationship between identity politics and intersectionality in fat activism and Fat Studies. We suggest that unexamined contradictions that arise from this mismatch may be counterproductive to the important subversive aims of the movement. (shrink)

Anorexia can be characterized as a profound transformation in social relations. These transformations occur across a number of overlapping fields, and include a range of institutional and domestic spaces and myriad mundane bodily practices in each. Through an examination of household space and a conventional treatment programme this article demonstrates the ways in which people with anorexia use and transform space. While there are many treatment programmes available for those with a diagnosis of anorexia, the ethnographic focus here is on (...) those who have undergone bed programmes in public hospitals. As a result of the particularities of time and space, these rooms are transformed into intimate spaces that represent domestic bedrooms, thus fundamentally changing the nature of shared space in institutionalized settings. These transformations, however, are not straightforward, for these bedrooms fuse a number of bodily practices (such as eating, sleeping and abluting) that are sharply demarcated in domestic architecture. In these hospital bedrooms, private and public space is conflated, reversed and made ambiguous. Moreover, this article argues that this institutional transformation of space reproduces many of the private practices associated with anorexia, a factor which has been overlooked in the recorded failure of these types of programmes. Bourdieu suggested that the habitus contains the ‘genetic information’ which both allows and disposes successive generations to reproduce the world they inherit from their parents’ generation. While his writings on habitus are concerned with embodied dispositions, biological processes are not a feature of the practical reason of habitus. Recent critiques of the separate worlds of biology and culture, and the rise in epigenetics, provide new opportunities for expanding theoretical concepts like habitus. Using obesity science as a case study we attempt (...) to conceptualise the enfolding of biological and social processes (via a Deleuzian metaphor) to develop a concept of biohabitus – reconfiguring how social and biological environments interact across the life course, and may be transmitted and transformed intergenerationally. In conclusion we suggest that the enfolding and reproduction of social life that Bourdieu articulated as habitus is a useful theoretical frame that can be enhanced to critically develop epigenetic understandings of obesity, and vice versa. Some Indigenous Australians have embraced developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) and epigenetic discourses to highlight the legacies of slow violence in a settler colonial context. Despite important differences between Indigenous and scientific knowledges, some Indigenous scholars are positioning DOHaD and epigenetics as a resource to benefit their communities. This article argues that time plays a crucial role of brokering disparate knowledge spaces in Indigenous discourses of postgenomics, with both Indigenous cosmological frames and DOHaD/epigenetics centring a circular temporal model. Drawing on interview data with scientists who work in Indigenous health, and broader ethnographic work in Indigenous Australian contexts where epigenetics is deployed, this article explores how different circularities of space and time become entangled to co-produce narratives of historical trauma. We use the concept of biocircularity to understand the complex ways that Indigenous and postgenomic temporalities are separated and connected, circling each other to produce a postcolonial articulation of postgenomics as a model of collective embodiment and distributed responsibility. ABSTRACTAccording to difference-based models of causal judgement, the epistemic state of the agent should not affect judgements of cause. Four experiments examined opportunity chains in which a physical event enabled a subsequent proximal cause to produce an outcome. All four experiments showed that when the proximal cause was a human action, it was judged as more causal if the agent was aware of his opportunity than if he was not or if the proximal cause was a physical event. The first (...) two experiments showed that these preferences could not be explained in terms of differences in perceived conditional probability, social controllability or perceptions of the causal sequence as forming a single unit. The third experiment showed that awareness affected the perceived deliberateness with which the action brought the outcome about but not its perceived voluntariness. The present article explores the applicability of the term “rhetoric” in a non-Western context and, in particular, the legitimacy of such an attempt in the case of Early China, where the Warring States period is traditionally considered as the golden age of early Chinese “rhetoric”. The pre-imperial and early imperial received literature provides good evidence for the employment of a well-established and clearly defined set of argumentative techniques in everyday political practice in ancient China. No handbook on such techniques has (...) been handed down, and a proper term to define them as part of a broader, more structured activity that could match Western “rhetoric” does not appear until the medieval period. The article argues, however, that by applying a more fluid concept of “rhetoric” and by extending its scope beyond and across cultural boundaries it is not only possible but also legitimate to a certain extent to talk about a rhetorical tradition in the case of ancient China as well. The Drake Relays are one of the iconic events of track and field in the United States. World and Olympic champions test their speed and stamina on the famed Blue Oval in Des Moines, Iowa, every April, and by spring 2013 they had set fourteen world records and fifty-one American records. But unlike most other top meets, this one also features college athletes from all over the country and high school athletes from across Iowa, giving them the experience of a (...) lifetime—competing on the same track with the elite in their sport. This mix brings many enthusiastic spectators to the stadium and makes for an unusually close bond between fans and athletes—it’s as if everyone’s family is there cheering. Dem Beispiel Edmund Husserls folgend unternimmt M.-P. einen grosz angelegten Versuch, die Grundlagen der Sozialphilosophie philosophisch zu erhellen. Er verbindet dabei transzendentalphänomenologische, existenzialphilosophische und lebensphilosophische Denkmotive zu einer sehr persönlichen und ursprünglichen Synthese. Im Hinblick auf den schwierigen Charakter und die undurchsichtige Struktur seiner Ausführung wird zunächst eine Interpretation gegeben. M.-P. geht dialektisch vor. Seine These beruht auf seiner ausführlich entwicelten und sorgfältig dokumentierten Philosophie der menschlichen Leiblichkeit (vergi. Phänomenologie der Wahrnehmung übers, und eingeführt von RUDOLF BOEHM, Berlin 1966, S. (...) 1-396 ; vergi, auch WILLI MAIER : Das Problem der Leiblichkeit bei Jean-Paul Sartre und Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Tübingen 1964, S. 21-101). Diese steht im schroffen Gegensatz zur Cartesianischen Tradition. M.-P. zufolge ist die geistige Existenz eine fortwährende Inkarnation. Hieraus ergibt sich, dasz das Bewusztsein notwendigerweise einen Leib besitzt. Der Leib ist ferner weder Ding noch Bewusztsein ; er hat eine eigene, „dritte” Seinsweise. Eben daher verleiht der Leib mir Zugang zur Welt ; ja noch mehr : Leib und Welt sind genau aufeinander abgestimmt. -Schlieszlich ist der Leib Träger typischer Intentionen motorischer, wahrnehmender, expressiver, elementar-praktischer und sexueller Art. Kurzum die leibliche Existenz ist vital-unpersönlich, sie sichert lediglich das mundane Leben im allgemeinen ; sie ist die Vorbedingung und Grundlage aller Objektivierung, aller Reflexion, aller bewuszten Entscheidung. Doch ist es M.-P. zufolge möglich, unumgänglich von einem subjektiven Leib, einem Leib-Subjekt zu sprechen. Der vorpersönliche Leib und die persönliche geistige Existenz des Menschen sind dabei nicht sauber voneinander geschieden ; ihr Verhältnis darf auch nicht als ein statisches gedacht werden. Es ist vielmehr durch fluktuierende Übergänge in beide Richtungen gekennzeichnet. Höchst persönliche Akte sedimentieren, verwandeln sich in habituelle Erwerbe und Automatismen. Andererseits spielen derartige Habitualitäten in dem kulturellen, geistigen und persönlichen Leben des Menschen eine bedeutsame Rolle. Auf Grund dieser Voraussetzungen vermag M.-P. die Wahrnehmung des alter ego völlig anders zu beschreiben als Husserl. -Wenn mein Blick auf ein anderes Leib-Subjekt fällt, das handelt, dann empfangen alle Dinge, die das andere Subjekt umgeben, eine neue Bedeutung. Sie sind nunmehr das, was das Verhalten des Anderen aus ihnen macht. Eben deshalb sehen wir das andere Leib-Subjekt nie und nimmer als ein ausgedehntes Stück Materie an. Wir betrachten es auch nicht als einen Bestandteil der Welt. Das andere Leib-Subjekt ist vielmehr etwas, was mit der Welt umgeht, sie im Griff hat und auf sie einwirkt. So ist es erklärlich, dasz mein Leib, wenn er den Leib des Anderen wahrnimmt, darin eine vertraute Weise erkennt, sich mit den mundanen Dingen einzulassen. Er sieht in dem andern Leib ein Organ seiner eigenen möglichen Intentionen. Dieses Erkennen soll nun nach M.-P. zu einer Verschmelzung führen. So wie die Glieder meines Leibes ein System bilden, so bilden nunmehr mein Leib und der Leib des Anderen ein einziges Ganzes, das von einer einzigen namenlosen, vorpersönlichen Existenz bewohnt wird. Auf diese Weise ist die Koexistenz psychophysischer Subjekte erklärlich, nicht aber die von Mitmenschen. Doch scheint die Erhellung der letzteren keine Schwierigkeiten mehr zu bieten. Der Mitmensch ist ein Subjekt, das mit Kulturobjekten umzugehen weisz. Unter den Erzeugnissen der Kultur nun spielt die Sprache eine entscheidende Rolle. Im Dialog entwerfen ich und der Andere eine gemeinsame geistige Landschaft. Wir kommunizieren miteinander, weil wir eine gemeinschaftliche Welt besitzen. Die Antithese erinnert in mancherlei Hinsicht an die Existenzphilosophie Jean-Paul Sartre's. Mit der Einführung der subjektiven Leiblichkeit ist das Problem nicht gelöst, betont M.-P. Die Schwierigkeit ist darin gelegen, dasz das alter ego genau dieselben Ansprüche erhebt wie das ego. Ist das wahrnehende Ich ein im vollen Sinne persönliches Ich, dann kann es kein anderes persönliches Ich wahrnehmen. Ist es dagegen ein anonymes Subjekt, dann ist der Andere gleichfalls ein namenloser Organismus. Gehen wir von der letztgenannten Voraussetzung aus, dann nivellieren wir alles, was die Einmaligkeit und Einzigkeit persönlicher Existenz ausmacht. Die Unzulänglichkeit der These seigt sich, wenn wir versuchen, sie auf die Problematik des „cogito” anzuwenden. Das „cogito” legt Zeugnis von meiner individuellen Existenz ab. Zu meiner Existenz gehört ein „transzendentales Feld”, d. h. ein Bereich, warin sich alle Seiende in Objekte-für-mich verwandeln. Bevor wir ein affirmatives oder negatives Urteil über etwas fällen können, musz ich diesem Etwas einen „Platz” in meinem transzendentalen Feld zuerkannt haben. Dies gilt auch mit Bezug auf die Kommunikation und die kommunizierenden Wesen. Sie müssen gleichfalls cogita meines cogito's sein. Es gibt, versichert M.-P., einen erlebten Solipsismus der nicht transzendiert werden kann. Es ist auch nicht möglich, diesen Solipsismus durch die Einführung eines göttlichen ego aufzuheben, dessen geheime Wirksamkeit ich in mir selbst entdecke. Es ist wahr, dasz wir, ich und der andere, im Bezug auf ein überindividuelles göttliches Bewusztsein empirische Objekte wären. Wir wären dann beide den Blicken des unendlichen Zuschauers ausgesetzt ; keiner hätte dem andern gegenüber eine Vorrang. Doch hätte ich dann die Wirksamkeit des göttlichen Bewusztseins in mir infolge eines reflexiven Aktes entdeckt. Dies würde aber bedeuten, dasz ich, der ich nur Schatten bin, durch meine Erkenntnis die Fülle des Lichtes erhellt habe, die ich Gott nenne. Etwas Derartiges würde dem Wesen Gottes widersprechen. Die Antithese kann daher auch durch die Annahme eines unendlichen Bewusztseins nicht widerlegt werden. Die Negation der Negation. Inmitten der Welt begegne ich Anderen. Dies ist ein Phänomen, das sich nicht wegdisputieren läszt. Wenn solipsistische Philosophen von der volkommenen Einsamkeit des ego sprechen, dann musz betont werden, dasz selbst der Begriff der Einsamkeit einen Hinweis auf mögliche Andere enthält. Auch die Alternative : „Ich oder der Andere” ist unhaltbar. Das Denken und Formulieren der Alternative bringt ja bereits mit sich, dasz sowohl Ich wie der Andere implizite gesetzt werden. -Sartre's berühmte „ Dialektik des Blickes" besitzt nicht die Beweiskraft, die ihr vielfach zu erkannt wird. Es ist wahr, dasz der objektivierende Blick des Anderen, solange dieser tatenlos bleibt und sich nicht mitteilt, die Kommunikation zeitweilig suspendiert. Es genügt aber, dasz der Andere ein Wort spricht, um ihn der Kommunikation zugänglich zu machen. Die Antithese wäre unwiderlegbar, wenn ihre Voraussetzungen zuträfen, wenn es nur zwei Seinsweisen gäbe : das Subjekt-und das Objekt-sein, das bewuszte und das dingartige Sein, das Für-sich-und das An-sich-sein. Diese Voraussetzungen weist M.-P.ab. Er hat -einigermaszen im Anschlusz an Husserl -den Beweis dafür geliefert, dasz das wahrgenommene Ding immer als einem groszen Zusammenhang angehörig aufgefaszt wird, letztlich dem Zusammenhang einer Welt. Unser Sein zur Welt geht daher immer der Wahrnehmung von „ diesem" und „jenem” voran. Die Welt ist offenbar weder Subjekt noch Objekt, weder Bewusztsein noch Ding. Was im Bezug auf die natürlichen Welt festgestellt worden is, gilt auch von der sozialen Welt. Unser ursprüngliches Verstehen des Sozialen macht es uns erst möglich, objektivierende Urteile über Individuen und Gruppen zu fällen. -M.-P. illustriert dies an den Beispielen des Klassenbewusztseins und des Nationalbewusztseins. Weder Klasse noch Nation dürfen als ein Fatum betrachtet werden, das von auszen her über mich verhängt worden ist. Ebensowenig sind sie „Werte”, die ich als souveraine Freiheit in meiner Immanenz „gesetzt” habe. „Klasse” und „Nation” sind vielmehr bestimmte Formen der Koexistenz, die für menschliche Individuen einen Aufforderungscharakter besitzen. In ruhigen Zeiten gehen Reize von ihnen aus, die nur gelegentliche Reaktionen auslösen. Man ahnt, dasz es sie gibt, aber man weisz es nicht. In einer revolutionären Situation oder in der Stunde einer nationalen Katastrophe können sie aber Anlasz zu einer klassenbewuszten bezw. nationalbewuszten Stellungnahme geben. Was dann in der Form einer Wahl, einer Entscheidung, eines Bekentnissen in Erscheinung tritt, ist lediglich die ausdrückliche Bestätigung eines vorhergehenden stillschweigenden Engagements. In diesem Sinne bezeichnet M.-P. das Soziale als etwas, das nicht primär Objekt unseres Bewusztseins sondern eine Dimension unseres Existierens ist. Die Frage nach der Transzendenz. Sind M.-P. zufolge soziale Gebilde wie z. B. „Klasse” oder „Nation” bewutetseinstranszendente Realitäten oder bewusztseinsimmanente Inhalte ? -Es ist für M.-P. charakteristisch, dasz er diese Alternative ablehnt. Er wirft zwar das Problem der Transzendenz auf, aber er stellt es auf eine neuartige Weise. Transzendent nennt er diejenigen Phänomene, die mich übersteigen, die aber dennoch nur insoferne für mich sind, als ich sie erfasse und erlebe. Er illustriert jene Problematik an der Hand der Phänomene „Vergangenheit” und „Welt”. Die Vergangenheit ist für den Realisten eine Spur, die sich auf meiner Hirnrinde oder in meiner Pyche befindet. Für den Idealisten ist sie ein cogitatum, das ein transcendentaler Geist in meiner Innerlichkeit konstituiert. In beiden Fällen wäre die Vergangenheit Gegenwart. M.-P. zufolge hat es die Vergangenheit immer schon für mich gegeben, auch wenn ich sie nicht mittels thetischer Akte vergegenwärtigt habe. In analoger Weise ist die Welt allerdings das, was mich umringt, aber sie befaszt mich, auch ohne dasz ich mir davon reflexiv bewuszt werde. Sofern mein Bewusztsein ausdrücklich Zeugnis von ihr ablegt, musz ich die Welt immanent nennen. Sofern sk aber mein Leben bestimmt hat, bevor ich von ihr gewuszt habe, ist sie bewusztseinstranszendent. Dieselbe „negatio supposti” wendet M.-P. nun auch auf das alter ego an. Der Andere ist transzendent, denn sein Sein-für-mich kommt nicht durch irgendwelche intenþionale Leistungen - Analogieschlusz, Introjektion oder Einfühlung -zustande. Ich konstituiere den Anderen nicht, denn ich bin kein göttliches Bewusztsein. Er ist bei mir, bevor ich ausdrücklich kennende, strebende oder wertende Akte vollziehe. -Dennoch ist es wahr, dasz das alter ego der Andere in Bezug auf mich ist. Das könnte er nicht sein, wenn mein Bewusztsein sein Sein nicht bezeugte. Das Zeugnis meines Bewusztseins ist dabei die ausdrückliche Bekräftigung von etwas, das im Stillen bereits in mir lebte. Es ist jedoch erforderlich, damit der Andere mir wirklich gegenübersteht. Infolge dieser wesentlich notwendigen bewuszten Affirmation ist der Andere meinem Bewusztsein auch immanent. - Wenn M.-P. daher behauptet, dasz das alter ego sowohl transzendent als immanent ist, dann darf man das nicht als eine spielerische Ausflucht betrachten. Es bedeutet, dasz sich mein gesamtes Leben in einer Sphäre von Sozialität abspielt, und dasz diese Sphäre das bewuszte Beurteilen und Sich-Verhalten gegenüber sozialen Partnern erst möglich macht. Das transzendentale Motiv im Denken M. P.'s. Das Problem der Transzendenz stellt sich demnach bei M.-P. auf eine sehr besondere Weise : es ist die Frage nach der Seinsart eines Transzendenten, das nicht ohne weiteres Überstieg des Selbst und eines Immanenten, das nicht schlechthin Wohnen in dem Selbst ist. Überdies formuliert er das Problem nicht in statischen, sondern in dynamischen Ausdrücken und Begriffen. Wie kann ich „ Urpräsenz" sein, die jede Anwesenheit eines Anderen bei mir bedingt, und gleichzeitig „Entgegenwärtigung”, die mich entrückt, fragt er sich. -Die Lösung dieser für ihn entscheidende Frage sucht er in der Richtung einer Transzendentalphilosophie. Das Paradox der immanenten Transzendenz kann nur dann philosophisch begreiflicher werden, wenn etwas gefunden wird, das die beiden Pole : „ Mich” und „den Anderen” umspannt ; das den Gegensatz zwischen Innerlichkeit und Äuszerlichkeit aufhebt ; das Interiorität zur Äuszerlichkeit erweitert und die Exteriorität verinnerlicht. M.-P. führt zunächst einen einigermaszen veränderten Begriff der Subjektivität ein. Das Bewusztsein, das cogito, die Subjektivität ist ihm zufolge nicht ohne weiteres als Identität mit sich selbst, als Selbstanwesenheit, als Wohnen in sich selbst zu charakterisieren. Ja, die absolute Selbstanwesenheit wird in Wahrheit niemals vollkommen realisiert, da die Subjektivität gleichzeitig auch Gerichtet-sein auf den Andern, Offenstehen für die Welt und Sprung nach der Zukunft ist. Sofern nun die Subjektivität nicht starre, unveränderliche Identität sondern ek-statisches Sein beim Anderen ist, ist ihre Seinsweise keine andere als die der Temporalität. So wie die Zeit in jeder ihrer temporalen Ekstasen das zur Entfaltung bringt, was in der vorgehenden als Keim angelegt war, so ist auch die Subjektivität der Drang, das zum Ausdruck zu bringen, was bereits implizit in ihre gelebt hat. -Nach M.-P. ist es falsch zu behaupten, das Subjekt befinde sich „ in" der Zeit. Er betrachtet vielmehr Subjekt und Zeit als ein und dieselbe alles gründende Wirklichkeit. Damit hat er auch das Problem der immanenten Transzendenz seiner Lösung näher gebracht. Die Zeit ist ja einerseits Anwesen, Gegenwart, Urpräsenz ; andererseits ist sie Flusz, Entgegenwärtigung, Ekstase. Sie ist das „wahre Transzendentale”, der „Ursprung der Transzendenzen”. Damit ist auch klar, welche Rolle das transzendentale Motiv im Denken M. P.' s spielt. M.-P. befaszt sich nicht mit der Möglichkeit formaler apriorischer Prinzipien. Er entwirft auch keine Lehre von den konstituierenden Leistungen eines transzendentalen Bewusztseins. M.-P. glaubt, das „wahre Transzendentale”, das der Ursprung der Realitäten ist, in der Temporalität entdeckt zu haben. Im Lichte dieser Entdeckung meint M.-P. nun auch, das Rätsel des alter ego lösen zu können. Es ist wahr, dasz ein Bewusztsein das andere ausschlieszt. Mit der Temporalität ist es aber anders gestellt. Die Zeit ist ja das Transzendens schlechthin. Sie überfliegt alle Grenzen und überbrückt alle Abgründe. So wie meine Gegenwart einer Zukunft entgegenwächst, die ich nicht kenne und vielleicht nie kennen lernen werde, so öffnet sich eine Gegenwart auch der Gegenwart des Anderen, die mir unbekannt ist. Ich verstehe auf vorprädikative Weise, dasz im Anderen derselbe Drang derZeitungen am Werk ist wie in mir, und dieses Verständnis gestattet mir, in dem Anderen den möglichen geistigen Partner zu erkennen. Die Analyse und Interpretation der Sozialphilosophie M.-P. gibt dem Verfasser Anlasz zu einigen kritische Betrachtungen. Sie betreffen vier Denkmotive M.-P.' s : die vermeintliche Verschmelzung der psychophysischen Subjekte, seinen Begriff der Welt, seinen existenzphilosophischen und seinen transzendentalphilosophischen Ansatz. Gezeigt wird, dasz aus den beiden letztgenannten Ansätzen keine geeignete Grundlage für eine personale Sozialphilosophie zu gewinnen ist. (shrink)

This article draws on a review of Megan Warin’s 2010 book, Abject Relations: Everyday Worlds of Anorexia, to discuss the ways in which a feminist ethnographic approach might disrupt dominant cultural narratives of eating disorders and embodiment. My argument draws on feminist work on figuration and ‘body image’ to discuss how the anorexic body becomes a figure of abjection, both in media images and in popular feminist discourse. I examine how cultural narratives and images are pathologically capable of both (...) engendering disgust in the non-anorexic spectator and, second (and more threateningly), moving vulnerable, female spectators to imitation – a power to affect and infect onlookers which is central to contemporary debates about what is popularly called ‘body image’. By drawing on Warin’s work, the article examines how a critical feminist ethnography might move debates on eating disorders beyond the reproduction of tropes of abjection, disgust and discipline which have led to an impasse in the field, and ask whether, by paying attention to the lived experience of anorexia, it might be possible for the anorexic subject to speak.
