How Comparative is Semantics? A Unified ParametricTheory of Bare Nouns and Proper Names.Giuseppe Longobardi - 2001 - Natural Language Semantics 9 (4):335-369.
One of the two central suggestions put forth in Longobardi (1991, 1994) was that Romance/English differences in the syntax of proper names were parametrically connected to supposed differences in the semantics of bare (plural and mass) common nouns (BNs). The present article will pursue this line of investigation, trying to make precise such meaning differences and to understand the reason for their apparently surprising parametric association with the syntax of proper names. It will be shown that in most Romance varieties (...)

Reconsidering the scribbling stage of drawing: a new perspective on toddlers' representational processes.Claudio Longobardi, Rocco Quaglia & Nathalie O. Iotti - 2015 - Frontiers in Psychology 6:145087.
Although the scribbling stage of drawing has been historically regarded as meaningless and transitional, a sort of prelude to the "actual" drawing phase of childhood, recent studies have begun to re-evaluate this important moment of a child's development and find meaning in what was once considered mere motor activity and nothing more. The present study analyzes scribbling in all its subphases and discovers a clear intention behind young children's gestures. From expressing the dynamic qualities of an object and the child's (...)

The Impact of Physical Distancing in the Pandemic Situation: Considering the Role of Loneliness and Social Brain.Rosalba Morese & Claudio Longobardi - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
The new normal has made social distancing a new way of experiencing sociality. Social neuroscience has for a long time been concerned with studying the beneficial effects of social relationships, of physical contact. It is known that physical contact activates neurophysiological processes that reduce the perception of discomfort and even physical pain. So in the absence of physical contact, our social brain may be modulated differently when we are with others. But what could be the long-term effects of this normality? (...)

Cross-cultural adaptation and initial validation of the Brazilian-Portuguese version of the pediatric automated neuropsychological assessment metrics.Jaqueline Cristina de Amorim, Simone Thiemi Kishimoto, Cibele Longobardi Cutinhola Elorza, Flávia Alegretti Cavaletti, Roberto Marini, Clovis Artur Silva, Claudia Saad-Magalhães, Paula Teixeira Fernandes, Hermine I. Brunner & Simone Appenzeller - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13:945425.
Automated neuropsychiatric batteries have been used in research and clinical practice, including for chronic diseases, such as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. The Pediatric Automated Neuropsychological Assessment Metrics battery, originally developed for use in American-English speaking individuals, allows tracking of cognitive functions. It can be applied to people over 9 years old. The aim of this study was to translate and present initial validation data from the Ped-ANAM into Brazilian-Portuguese. We translated the battery according to Beaton’s guidelines. Psychometric properties were tested, internal (...)

Perceived Statistical Knowledge Level and Self-Reported Statistical Practice Among Academic Psychologists.Laura Badenes-Ribera, Dolores Frias-Navarro, Nathalie O. Iotti, Amparo Bonilla-Campos & Claudio Longobardi - 2018 - Frontiers in Psychology 9:349696.
Introduction: Publications arguing against the null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) procedure and in favor of good statistical practices have increased. The most frequently mentioned alternatives to NHST are effect size statistics (ES), confidence intervals (CIs), and meta-analyses. A recent survey conducted in Spain found that academic psychologists have poor knowledge about effect size statistics, confidence intervals, and graphic displays for meta-analyses, which might lead to a misinterpretation of the results. In addition, it also found that, although the use of ES (...)

Formal Syntax and Deep History.Andrea Ceolin, Cristina Guardiano, Monica Alexandrina Irimia & Giuseppe Longobardi - 2020 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
We show that, contrary to long-standing assumptions, syntactic traits, modeled here within the generative biolinguistic framework, provide insights into deep-time language history. To support this claim, we have encoded the diversity of nominal structures using 94 universally definable binary parameters, set in 69 languages spanning across up to 13 traditionally irreducible Eurasian families. We found a phylogenetic signal that distinguishes all such families and matches the family-internal tree topologies that are safely established through classical etymological methods and datasets. We have (...)

International studies focus on the successful transition into higher education, which is considered crucial for both the students and the educational institution in the context of students' learning and adjustment in higher education. The aim of the current study was to identify student profiles that include cognitive, metacognitive, and motivational aspects of learning, but also aspects of resilience, emotion dysregulation, and anxiety. The sample consists of 316 Greek undergraduate students. The results showed four different -cognitive-emotional learner profiles: the emotionally stable (...)

The grammar of the essential indexical.T. Martin & W. Hinzen - unknown
Like proper names, demonstratives, and definite descriptions, pronouns have referential uses. These can be 'essentially indexical' in the sense that they cannot be replaced by non-pronominal forms of reference. Here we show that the grammar of pronouns in such occurrences is systematically different from that of other referential expressions, in a way that illuminates the differences in reference in question. We specifically illustrate, in the domain of Romance clitics and pronouns, a hierarchy of referentiality, as related to the topology of (...)

    Preface.Matt Richardson & Ashwini Tambe - 2016 - Feminist Studies 42 (3):559.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:preface That an overtly white-nationalist misogynist demagogue was voted into power in the United States is cause for alarm and despair. As the election results sink in and analyses take shape, we at Feminist Studies mark this moment via poetry, a tradition of feminist expression that we have long nurtured. We include in this issue a special section on poems responding to the election. Raw by necessity, they allow (...)

Parameters and the design of the Language Faculty.Maria Rita Manzini - 2019 - Evolutionary Linguistic Theory 1 (1):24-56.
FollowingBerwick and Chomsky (2011), parameters are degrees of freedom open at the externalization (EXT) of syntactico-semantic structures (SEM) by sensorimotor systems (PHON) (Section 1). Within this framework, inSection 2I focus on a case study concerning Northern Italian subject clitics, also raising the well-known question how to reconcile observable microvariation with the desideratum of a reduced number of (macro)parameters.Sections 3reviews recent relevant models of parameterization, the Rethinking Comparative Syntax model (ReCoS,Biberauer et al. 2014) and the Parameters & Schemata model (Longobardi (...)

    Discourse on the Natural Theology of the Chinese. [REVIEW]S. C. A. - 1978 - Review of Metaphysics 32 (2):364-364.
The fourth publication of the monograph series of the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy, this lengthy letter of Leibniz on Chinese philosophy is an important contribution to East-West philosophical dialogue, for it depicts a sympathetic yet critical assessment of Chinese philosophy on the basis of translations and secondary sources available to Leibniz. Leibniz’s interest, as the translators point out, was not merely ecumenical, but an expression of high regard for the intrinsic contributions of Chinese thought. In spite of mistakes (...)
