Throughout the development of an "ethic of care" different from an "ethic of justice," the relationship between the two has been problematic. Are they theories between which one must choose? Are they complementary? Are they domain-specific? In support of my view that neither is adequate by itself, I here examine the private domain of care of the dying by intimates, and find there important issues both of care and of justice.

Sara Ruddick's Maternal Thinking represents a great contribution to moral philosophy-in particular, by bringing women's "private" virtues into the public sphere. However, there remain problems in the analysis which need to be addressed: How can one possibly generalize about the practice of mothering from one, necessarily limited, perspective, given the facts of cultural diversity? Is Ruddick's normative account of mothering congruent with the reflective judgments of others? Is her account of the transformation of parochial mothering into feminist peace work viable? (...) After exploring these three questions, this reviewer calls, with Ruddick, for the telling of more maternal stories, from different cultural, racial and economic perspectives. (shrink)

Rooted in the field of cathedral studies, this paper draws into dialogue three bodies of knowledge: Edward Bailey’s notion of implicit religion that, among other things, highlights the continuing traction of the Christian tradition and Christian practice within secular societies; David Walker’s notion of the multiple ways through which in secular societies people may relate to the Christian tradition as embodied within the Anglican Church and John Fisher’s notion of spiritual wellbeing as conceptualised in relational terms. Against this conceptual background, (...) this paper draws on data provided by 1234 participants attending one of the Christmas Eve carol services in Liverpool Cathedral to explore the perceived impact of attendance on the spiritual health of people who do not believe in God and yet feel that Liverpool Cathedral is their cathedral, and it is this sense of belonging that brings them back at Christmas time.Contribution: Situated within the science of cathedral studies, this paper links in an original way three fields of discourse: Edward Bailey’s notion of implicit religion, David Walker’s notion of the four ways of belonging to God facilitated by the Anglican Church and John Fisher’s conceptualisation and operationalisation of the notion of spiritual wellbeing. The hypothesis developed from this original integration of theoretical perspectives is then tested empirically on data provided by 404 participants at carol services who do not believe in God. Il replace la quete dans l'activite d'ensemble du savant: monographies, cours de linguistique generale, travaux de mythographie. Il la situe dans un paysage intellectuel scrupuleusement balise. Par dela des considerations d'une technicite souvent rebutante, et non exemptes de contradictions (parfois flagrantes), il s'attache a suivre le fil d'une quete autant mystique que linguistique. Par surcroit il donne a (...) lire le texte de Lucrece (accompagne de sa traduction), et la facon dont le transfigurent les Cahiers (dont une part importante est reproduite en fac simile). Il en soumet la lecture a certaines epreuves (dont un test informatique), qui demontrent que le phenomene echappe a la prison binaire qu'evoquait R. Barthes (son/graphie, demontre/indemontrable...), et reste d'une implacable actualite: qu'il pose dans toute son acuite la problematique d'une ecriture. Reste largement meconnu, Saussure le sera-t-il moins apres ce livre? Une chose est sure: on ne pourra, une fois ces pages refermees, conserver le meme regard sur celui qui fut en linguistique, selon le mot de Benveniste, une 'autre facon de commencer'. (shrink)

Most recent texts in moral philosophy have either concentrated on practical moral issues or else, if theoretical, have tended toward one-sided presentations of recent, fashionable views. Discussions of applied ethics cannot go very far without revealing underlying philosophical assumptions about how deeper, more general issues are treated. Similarly, recent approaches to ethics are difficult to understand without a knowledge of the context of the historical views against which these approaches are reacting. L'anthropologie scientifique est plurielle. L'identification des gênes par le généticien grâce au séquençage du génome ne problématise pas l'humain de la même façon que l'ethnologue qui cherche à penser ensemble la mondialisation de la culture et le respect des différences. Comme ses principes explicatifs reposent sur la réduction du complexe au simple, une première alternative se fait jour : faut-il disjoindre la nature et l'homme qui deviennent étrangers. Ou bien réduire l'humain au biologique et de là au physique? Dans les (...) deux cas, il devient impossible de poser la question du sens sauf à dire que cette question, qui n'est pas un problème, relève de l'arriération ou de la débilité mentale. Qu'est-ce que l'homme comme objet de science? Cette formulation est dénoncée par l'anthropologie philosophique comme l'amnésie à combattre, celle qui fait toujours oublier qu'il y a un sujet de toute objectivation : " si l'on suppose un air de flûte, dit Socrate, il faut également supposer un musicien " Mais encore, demande l'anthropologie théologique, qu'est-ce que l'homme en tant que créé, eu égard à son origine divine, haute puissance de primitivité? Seconde alternative : la division entre anthropologies est-elle une survivance historique en passe de résorption ou une diffraction productive? Penser l'homme, à quelle instance cela revient-il? Cette question préalable est à la clef de ces Écrits. C'est la différence de leur modalité interrogative qui fait le sérieux du pluriel des anthropologies. Une philosophie de la nature fait retour aujourd'hui, qui rétablit la légitimité de l'analyse causale des processus naturels. Elle suppose que l'on peut interroger la nature même, y compris sur les opérations de l'esprit en restituant ce qu'il en est. Mais l'homme est tel qu'il est dans son être question de son être. Troisième alternative. Va-t-on reconnaître ou effacer la spécificité anthropologique au sein des grandes régions de la réalité? Ces trois alternatives sous-tendent le questionnement sur l'homme aujourd'hui. La vie et la mort de l'homme ne sont pas que des problèmes, car leur phénomène premier est de nous trouver sans réponse à leur question. Pour l'heure il appelle des reprises critiques et des reformulations consenties. Ainsi la recherche de la personne - ce que l'humain a à être - est à la jonction de trois anthropologies. In order for the duty of friendship to be practically possible, and for gratitude and beneficence to be unencumbered virtues, Kant need not have held that human beings are basically good. He need only have understood that they are social beings, with desires for both independence and connection, autonomy and affiliation, and purposes that are not always merely their own. I have argued that because he did not, his moral theory is flawed in three important respects.In Kant's theory, morality is (...) only possible because humans are rational, and necessary because (absent morality) they are self-interested individuals, egoistically motivated, distrustful and isolated. When this view is applied to particular questions of friendship and the virtues, it becomes a distorting medium. It is my contention that a more adequate theory of character would result from the application of Kantian moral principles to a sounder, more social conception of human nature.In conclusion, I wish to make it clear that I am not arguing that human beings are basically good, only that they are essentially social. In his political writings Kant has emphasized the social dimension of reason itself, and I believe he would agree with Thomas Nagel's recent claim about human nature and morality: To say that altruism and morality are possible in virtue of something basic to human nature is not to say that men are basically good. Men are basically complicated; how good they are depends on whether certain conceptions and ways of thinking have achieved dominance, a dominance which is precarious in any case. The Céli Dé monks as we see them in the texts associated with their monasteries had a reputation for extreme asceticism. Following their leader, MáelRúain, who had an especially stern reputation for rigorous observance, they believed heaven had to be earned by saying many prayers, by penitential practices and by intense personal effort and striving on the part of each individual monk. To this end, they engaged in such practices as rigorous fasting, long vigils, confession of sins, strict Sabbath observance (...) and devotional practices involving many prayers. Their view of humanity and of creation generally was negative and they saw God as a stern judge. However, there was another aspect to Céli Dé monasticism which we see in the Félire Óengusso, the metrical martyrology compiled by Óengus the Culdee, a monk of Tallaght. We see from his Félire that he understood holiness as a gift of God’s grace, both for the saints in heaven, whom he describes as ‘radiant’ and ‘shining like the sun’, and for those still on earth, through the mercy and graciousness of God himself. His Félire was compiled as an act of devotion to Jesus and the saints, whom he addresses in terms of great warmth, tenderness and intimacy, in expressions which prefigure the language of the medieval mystics. So by studying the lives of these two monks, MáelRúain and Óengus, his protégée, as case studies, we can see that for the Céli Dé, holiness was less a matter of ‘either asceticism or mysticism’, but rather ‘both and’. This dissertation originated in a reasoned conviction that character is of crucial importance for moral theory; that its neglect in the modern period is regrettable. Considerations of character can illuminate judgments of the rightness of actions and the goodness of ends. Indeed, good character is one of the greatest goods. Further, the understanding of character and its development provides an essential link between moral theory and social philosophy. ;The particular content of this dissertation is Kant's theory of character. Recent scholars (...) have illuminated his treatment of character and the virtues; although these interpretations are valuable, there remains a need for the systematic articulation of the theory as a whole. ;My procedure has been to establish preliminary criteria for any theory of character, in the form of questions to which any adequate theory must given cogent answers, and then to discover Kant's answers to those questions. After the theory has been articulated, its adequacy is assessed. ;In Chapter One I review recent literature, contrasting act-centered with agent-centered approaches, and propose tentative criteria for theory of character. Chapters Two and Three present the rudiments of Kant's theory, and Chapter Three addresses standard criticisms. Chapter Four presents Kant's view of the development of character in its social context, and Chapter Five the problem which Kant's view of women's character presents for his theory as a whole. The final chapter evaluates its strengths and weaknesses. ;Although Kant's theory is shown to be flawed by his underlying conception of human nature, and by his inconsistent view of female character, I shall argue that it is basically sound. His analysis of character as related to choice, reason, freedom and society is comprehensive, and his emphasis on the importance of the moral agent, rather than on outcomes or general rules, makes him preeminently a philosopher of character. In this paper, we contextualize Claudia Card's work on forgiveness within wider literatures on forgiveness. With Card, we emphasize the costs of forgiveness and the sufferings of victims, and suggest alternatives to forgiving evils. Women who live in particularly unsafe contexts require recognition more than reconciliation. We conclude that those who forgive evil also require recognition that respects the choices of forgiving agents, seeing their decisions as relevant to conceptual analysis about forgiveness.

The Evolution of Complexity is addressed to a broad audience of academics and researchers from different disciplines, who are interested in the picture of our world emerging from the new sciences of complexity. This book reviews the new concepts proposed by the diverse theories of evolution, self-organisation, general systems, cybernetics, and the `complex adaptive systems' approach pioneered by the Santa Fe institute. Francis Hutcheson was the first major philosopher of the Scottish Enlightenment, and one of the great thinkers in the history of British moral philosophy. He firmly rejected the view, common then as now, that morality is nothing more than the prudent pursuit of self-interest, arguing in favor of a theory of a moral sense. The two previously inaccessible texts presented here are the most eloquent expressions of this theory. F. H. Bradley was the foremost philosopher of the British Idealist school, which came to prominence in the second half of the nineteenth century. Bradley, who was a life fellow of Merton College, Oxford, was influenced by Hegel, and also reacted against utilitarianism. He was recognised during his lifetime as one of the greatest intellectuals of his generation and was the first philosopher to receive the Order of Merit, in 1924. His work is considered to have been important to the (...) formation of analytic philosophy. In metaphysics, he rejected pluralism and realism, and believed that English philosophy needed to deal systematically with first principles. This work, first published in 1893, is divided into two parts: 'Appearance' deals with exposing the contradictions that Bradley believed are hidden in our everyday conceptions of the world; and in 'Reality', he builds his positive account of reality and considers possible objections to it.
