Using data from previous editions, plus 3,062 new measurements from 721 papers, we list, evaluate, and average measured properties of gauge bosons and the recently discovered Higgs boson, leptons, quarks, mesons, and baryons. We summarize searches for hypothetical particles such as supersymmetric particles, heavy bosons, axions, dark photons, etc. All the particle properties and search limits are listed in Summary Tables. We also give numerous (...) tables, figures, formulae, and reviews of topics such as Higgs Boson Physics, Supersymmetry, Grand Unified Theories, Neutrino Mixing, Dark Energy, Dark Matter, Cosmology, Particle Detectors, Colliders, Probability and Statistics. Among the 117 reviews are many that are new or heavily revised, including those on Pentaquarks and Inflation. The complete Review is published online in a journal and on the website of the Particle Data Group. The printed PDG Book contains the Summary Tables and all review articles but no longer includes the detailed tables from the Particle Listings. This book offers an introduction to the Sophists of fifth-century Athens and a new overall interpretation of their thought. Since Plato first animadverted on their activities, the Sophists have commonly been presented as little better than intellectual mountebanks - a picture which Professor Kerferd forcefully challenges here. Interpreting the evidence with care, he shows them to have been part of an exciting and historically crucial intellectual movement. At the centre of their teaching was a form of relativism, most famously expressed (...) by Protagoras as 'Man is the measure of all things', and which they developed in a wide range of views - on knowledge and argument, virtue, government, society, and the gods. On all these subjects the Sophists did far more than simply provoke Plato to thought. Their contributions were substantial and serious; they inaugurated the debate on many central philosophical questions and decisively shifted the focus of philosophical attention from the cosmos to man. L’analyse comparative du Traité des principes de la connaissance humaine (1710) et des Trois dialogues entre Hylas et Philonous (1713), qui se présentent comme les deux phases successives de la première mise en forme doctrinale de l’immatérialisme, permet de formuler l’hypothèse suivante : le dialogisme que ne cesse de susciter le Traité semble spontanément conduire aux Dialogues, comme si Berkeley adoptait enfin la rhétorique adéquate à son projet philosophique. Or l’étude quantitative de la distribution de la parole dans les Dialogues (...) montre au contraire qu’ils n’assument le dialogisme latent qui transparaissait dans le Traité que pour l’annuler : en réalité, le personnage de Philonous détient une écrasante maîtrise de la parole, qui lui permet de disposer de véritables pièces doctrinales, tandis qu’Hylas s’épuise en de multiples objections contradictoires. Le dialogisme n’est donc qu’un outil ponctuel de la réforme rhétorique du propos de Berkeley, destiné à susciter l’interlocuteur pour mieux le dissoudre. (shrink)

L'art médical est fréquemment utilisé par Platon pour penser de façon analogique la construction de la science politique et ses difficultés. Une lecture comparée des usages de cette analogie dans le Gorgias et le Politique permet de montrer de quelle façon Platon utilise cette analogie, et à quel moment précis il s'en défait pour indiquer la différence entre un art des cas (la médecine) et un art des codes (la politique). Au contraire, Averroès, dans son Exposition sur la République de (...) Platon, reprend l'analogie entre médecine et politique d'un point de vue épistémologique, pour mettre en évidence l'identique articulation interne que connaissent ces deux disciplines, et qui permet d'y distinguer chaque fois un art et une science, ou une pratique et une théorie. Averroès se présente ainsi, dans la mesure même où il contourne le problème soulevé par Platon, comme l'initiateur d'une longue tradition d'usage de l'analogie médico-politique, qui va se poursuivre du XIIIe au XVIe siècles pour élucider la structure épistémologique de la science politique. Peut-être en cherchant des images en creux, des images inquiètes, incomplètes, qui suscitent l’interrogation et l’exercice projectif de la pensée et de l’imagination : des images qui ne représentent pas les effets des (...) bouleversements, mais les laissent flotter à la lisière de la représentation. Le rapprochement des œuvres de Machiavel et de Bodin a déjà une longue histoire, à laquelle l’intention de cet article n’est pas d’ajouter un chapitre : il ne s’agit donc pas de proposer une lecture d’ensemble du rapport entre ces deux auteurs ou entre leurs doctrines générales, mais seulement de mettre en parallèle leurs conceptions d’une certaine méthode pour interpréter les histoires, conceptions qui se laissent lire d’une part dans l’épître dédicatoire et le proemio des Discorsi sopra la prima deca (...) di Tito Livio de Machiavel (ca. 1518) et d’autre part dans l’épître dédicatoire et le proemium de la Methodus ad facilem historiarum cognitionem de Bodin (1566). À un demi-siècle d’écart, ces deux prologues mettent en effet en évidence le caractère indispensable d’un art de la lectio des histoires pour fonder les raisonnements de la science politique, mais ils le font, semble-t-il, en adoptant deux points de vue profondément différents : la nature exacte de cette différence est le véritable objet de cet article. The fitting attitude analysis of value states that for objects to have value is for them to be the fitting targets of attitudes. Good objects are the fitting targets of positive attitudes, while bad objects are the fitting targets of negative attitudes. The following paper presents an argument to the effect that value and the fittingness of attitudes differ in terms of their explanations. Whereas the fittingness of attitudes is explained, inter alia, by both the properties of attitudes and those (...) of their fitting targets, the explanation of value tends to have a different content. In particular, objects have value in virtue of the features that make them valuable, and these need not involve any attitudinal properties. If this is right, then there are reasons to doubt the claim that for objects to have value is just for them to be the fitting targets of attitudes. Insofar as value is a property, it appears to be distinct from the property of objects being the fitting targets of attitudes. (shrink)
