This article approaches Confucianism as a lost art of living and asks how we can make it relevant again for us. Central to this approach is the cultivation of heart-mind designed to help cure ourselves of self-oblivion and self-centeredness so prevalent in our culture today. It is based on the idea of Li, the same as Spinoza’s God, the absolute Being that has nothing to do with human aspirations at all. To seek this, Li is therefore to gain true freedom. (...) The belief in free will has been frequently challenged since Benjamin Libet published his famous experiment in 1983. Although Libet’s experiment is highly dependent upon subjective reports, no study has been conducted that focused on a first-person or introspective perspective of the task. We took a neurophenomenological approach in an N = 1 study providing reliable and valid measures of the first-person perspective in conjunction with brain dynamics. We found that a larger readiness potential is attributable to more frequent occurrences (...) of self-initiated movements during negative deflections of the slow cortical potentials . These negative deflections occur in parallel with an inner impulse reported by an expert meditator which may in turn lead to a voluntary act. We demonstrate in this proof-of-principle approach that the first-person perspective obtained by an expert meditator in conjunction with neural signal analysis can contribute to our understanding of the neural underpinnings of voluntary acts. This volume outlines a model of language that can be characterized as functionalist, usage-based, dynamic, and complex-adaptive. The core idea is that linguistic structure is not stable and uniform, but continually refreshed by the interaction between three components: usage, the communicative activities of speakers; conventionalization, the social processes triggered by these activities and feeding back into them; and entrenchment, the individual cognitive processes that are also linked to these activities in a feedback loop. Hans-Joerg Schmid explains how this multiple feedback (...) system works by extending his Entrenchment-and-Conventionalization Model, showing how the linguistic system is created, sustained, and continually adapted by the ongoing interaction between usage, conventionalization, and entrenchment. Fulfilling the promise of usage-based accounts, the model explains how exactly usage is transformed into collective and individual grammar and how these two grammars in turn feed back into usage.0The book is exceptionally broad in scope, with insights from a wide range of linguistic subdisciplines. Eric Voegelin (1901-1985) zahlt zu den prominentesten Vertretern einer neoklassischen politischen Philosophie im 20. Jahrhundert. Wesentliche Grundlagen seiner politischen Theorie entwickelt Voegelin in der Auseinandersetzung mit der staatstheoretischen Debatte der 1920er- und 1930er-Jahre und im Versuch der Grundlegung einer "Staatslehre als Geisteswissenschaft". Im weiteren Verlauf seiner theoretischen Arbeit erscheint ihm der Begriff des Staates als politiktheoretische Fundamentalkategorie aber zunehmend fragwurdig. This book interprets Hannah Arendt’s work as a “wandering” type of political theory. Focusing on the sub-text of Arendt’s writings which questions “how to think” adequately in political theory whilst categorically refraining from explicitly investigating meta-theoretical questions of epistemology and methodology, the book characterizes her theorizing as an oscillating movement between the experiential positions of philosophy and politics, and by its distinctly multi-contextual perspective. In contrast to the “not of this world” attitude of philosophy, the book argues that Arendt’s political (...) theory is “of this world”. In contrast to politics, it refrains from being “at home” in any particular part of this world and instead wanders between the multiple horizons of the many different political worlds in time and space. The book explores how these two decisive motives of Arendt’s theoretical self-perception majorly influence her epistemological, methodological and normative frame of reference and inspire her understanding of major concepts, including politics, judgment, understanding, nature, and space. Étant donné que dans le monde dans lequel nous vivons, droit et justice ne coïncident pas a priori, l'énoncé « le droit se base sur la justice » serait donc un énoncé descriptif erroné. Les notions de « justice », de « droit » et de « justification » sont des (...) éléments et fonctions de théorie normative. Ni l'idée de droit - la justice - ni le droit positif ne peuvent se comprendre comme une objectivité ontiquement « donnée » par la nature, par la raison ou par l'histoire, une objectivité que les sujets de droit n'auraient qu'à reconnaître. Le savoir et les actions morales s'élaborent dans les contextes du pluralisme des cultures épistémiques et des pratiques sociales. Les normes de conduite dérivent d'une multitude de versions culturelles du monde dans les contextes desquelles les perceptions du bien, de la justice, de l'acte juste, de la reconnaissance et de la réconciliation se différencient également. Le volume développe ces questions dans un esprit critique et dans la perspective transculturelle du dialogue arabo-allemand de l'UNESCO, auquel participent des spécialistes de l'épistémologie, de la philosophie politique, de l'histoire de la philosophie et des religions, notamment de l'Islam. Der Deutsche Idealismus war und ist eine der wirkungsmachtigsten Ideenkonstellationen in der Geschichte der Philosophie - nicht zuletzt deshalb, weil er Idealismus in praktischer Absicht war und auf geschichtlichen Fortschritt zielte. Er hat seine wesentlichen Quellen in der deutschen Kulturgeschichte. Ihn jedoch als ein vorrangig nationalgeschichtliches Phanomen zu behandeln, wurde zu kurz greifen. Transnational haben kulturelle Traditionen und Zukunftsperspektiven bei seiner Rezeption eine grosse Rolle gespielt und ihm jeweils ein besonderes Profil verliehen. Berucksichtigt man auch die wechselseitigen Interaktionen zwischen den (...) nationalen Rezeptionen, so wird die europaische Dimension der Entstehung und Wirkung des Deutschen Idealismus deutlich. Er war und ist ein zentrales Moment der Entwicklung Europas als einer polyphonen kulturellen Einheit. Die hier versammelten Studien konzentrieren sich auf Kant, Hegel und insbesondere Schelling.
