The article considers the ethics of education as a relatively new type of applied ethics. It is focused on identifying specific contradictory situations that arise in the educational process, analyzing and considering them as dilemmas of moral choice. It is shown that, like any applied ethics, the ethics of education is relevant because it is a product of ambiguity and novelty from the point of view of the morality of its modern problems. The author analyzes the institute of education, institutional (...) practice, reveals special problems of the phenomenon of education in the modern socio-cultural space. The specific dilemmas generated by the conflict of values, which require appropriate methods of moral regulation, are named. It is substantiated that ethical analysis not only reveals the moral dilemmas of the educational process, but even builds an algorithm for getting out of these difficult situations. The moral aspect of the value paradigm of educational activity, which is being formed today, the level of value orientation of the educational process is highlighted and analyzed. It is noted that the problems of implementing the modern paradigm of education in Ukraine, in addition to civilizational factors, are determined by the national features of reforming the educational system in the context of the immaturity of democracy and the market economy. In conclusion, it is emphasized the need to develop applied ethics of education in our country as a system of theoretical research and practical procedures for determining clear value bases for the formation of a new educational paradigm adequate to modern moral challenges. Study of concept of Brahman in Upanishads with special reference to the philosophy of Śāṇḍilya.

Crupi and Tentori (2012) propose a condition of adequacy for any Bayesian measure of explanatory power, which they call Explanatory Justice. They criticize a measure recently defended by Schupbach and Sprenger(2011) for failing to satisfy this condition, and they offer a new explanatorily just measure of explanatory power. In this paper, we investigate Explanatory Justice’s merits as a condition of adequacy. We offer three arguments against this condition, thus supporitng the idea that a measure of explanatory power should rather be (...) unjust. Then, in order to ensure that the debate advances beyond a mere battle of intuitions, we offer some new results derived from the empirical study described in (Schupbach, 2011a). All of this strengthens the case for Schupbach and Sprenger’s measure while simultaneously posing new challenges to Crupi and Tentori’s alternative proposal. (shrink)

Philosophical aspects of belief and ancestor worship in Southern Vietnam.

When scientists seek further confirmation of their results, they often attempt to duplicate the results using diverse means. To the extent that they are successful in doing so, their results are said to be robust. This paper investigates the logic of such "robustness analysis" [RA]. The most important and challenging question an account of RA can answer is what sense of evidential diversity is involved in RAs. I argue that prevailing formal explications of such diversity are unsatisfactory. I propose a (...) unified, explanatory account of diversity in RAs. The resulting account is, I argue, truer to actual cases of RA in science; moreover, this account affords us a helpful, new foothold on the logic undergirding RAs. (shrink)

In our previous writings we have outlined a mathematical theory of biological phenomena. In our systematic construction of “mathematical biology,” similar in its aims to mathematical physics, we have started with the fundamental unit,—the living cell. After having established a physico-mathematical theory of the fundamental properties of the cell, we have studied the interaction of several cells. This led us into two different fields. On the one hand we studied such interactions of cells, which determine the form of cellular aggregates, (...) constituting multicellular organisms. On the other hand we studied different types of functional interactions, which determine the reactions of the aggregate as a whole to different environmental changes. While the first field leads us eventually to the theory of organic form, the second brings us to the physico-mathematical theory of behavior. (shrink)
