Integrated information theory (IIT) 4.0: Formulating the properties of phenomenal existence in physical terms.Larissa Albantakis, Leonardo Barbosa, Graham Findlay, Matteo Grasso, Andrew Haun, William Marshall, William G. This paper presents Integrated Information Theory (IIT) 4.0. IIT aims to account for the properties of experience in physical (operational) terms. It identifies the essential properties of experience (axioms), infers the necessary and sufficient properties that its substrate must satisfy (postulates), and expresses them in mathematical terms. In principle, the postulates can be applied to any system of units in a state to determine whether it is conscious, to what degree, and in what way. IIT offers a parsimonious explanation of (...)

    Utility and Religion.

    Relaxation‐expansion model for self‐driven retinal morphogenesis.Mototsugu Eiraku, Taiji Adachi & Yoshiki Sasai - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (1):17-25.
The generation of complex organ structures such as the eye requires the intricate orchestration of multiple cellular interactions. In this paper, early retinal development is discussed with respect to the structure formation of the optic cup. Although recent studies have elucidated molecular mechanisms of retinal differentiation, little is known about how the unique shape of the optic cup is determined. A recent report has demonstrated that optic‐cup morphogenesis spontaneously occurs in three‐dimensional stem‐cell culture without external forces, indicating a latent intrinsic (...)

Effect of Hidden Vector on the Speech of PRVA.Tetsuya Matsui, Iori Tani, Kazuto Sasai & Yukio-Pegio Gunji - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study aimed to propose a novel method for designing a product recommendation virtual agent that can keep users motivated to interact with the agent. In prior papers, many methods of keeping users motivated postulated real-time and multi-modal interactions. The proposed novel method can be used in one-direction interaction. We defined the notion of the “hidden vector,” that is, information that is not mentioned by a PRVA and that the user can suppose spontaneously. We conducted an experiment to verify the (...)

Development of Metacognition in Adolescence: The Congruency-Based Metacognition Scale.Kelssy Hitomi dos Santos Kawata, Yuki Ueno, Ryuichiro Hashimoto, Shinya Yoshino, Kazusa Ohta, Atsushi Nishida, Shuntaro Ando, Hironori Nakatani, Kiyoto Kasai & Shinsuke Koike - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 11.
IntroductionPrevious studies on metacognitive ability were explored using self-report questionnaires that are difficult to adequately measure and evaluate when the capacity for self-reference is undeveloped. This study aimed to validate the Congruency-based Metacognition Scale to measure metacognition and the feeling of confidence abilities and to investigate the development of metacognition during adolescence.MethodsThe CMS was administered to 633 child–parent pairs in Japan. The CMS metacognition score was assessed based on congruency scores between the self-report of the child from a third-person perspective (...)

The Association Between Locus of Control and Psychopathology: A Cross-Cohort Comparison Between a UK (Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children) and a Japanese (Tokyo Teen Cohort) Cohort.Sarah Sullivan, Syudo Yamasaki, Shuntaro Ando, Kaori Endo, Kiyoto Kasai, Iryna Culpin, Christina Dardani, Stanley Zammit & Atsushi Nishida - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Background: An external locus of control is associated with poorer psychopathology in individualist cultures, but associations are reported to be weaker in collectivist cultures where an external style is less maladaptive. We investigated the prospective association between externality and psychotic-like experiences and depressive symptoms and compared the strength of associations between a UK and a Japanese cohort.Method: Cross-cultural cohort study of a UK and a Japanese cohort. Externality was assessed using the Children's Nowicki and Strickland Internal, External Scale and DS (...)
