As developed here, an ethical standard that requires community oversight of health research is justified on three principled grounds: respect for community autonomy and their right to self-determination; due consideration of the consequences of the research for the community as a whole; and, a more complete understanding of human autonomy. The paper concludes with practical recommendations regarding the composition of Community Advisory Boards to ensure that they have legitimate decision-making authority in diverse socio-cultural contexts. The study reports on the results of an empirical investigation of the education and recruitment processes used in HIV vaccine trials conducted in South Africa. Interviews were conducted with 21 key informants involved in HIV vaccine research in South Africa and three focus groups of community advisory board members. Data analysis identified seven major themes on the relationship between education and recruitment: the process of recruitment, the combined dual role of educators and recruiters, conflicts perceived by field staff, pressure to (...) achieve recruitment targets, problems in achieving comprehension, accountability and education as capacity building. The results raise ethical concerns about the adequacy of current informed consent processes in these settings. The study findings bear directly on current debates about issues of exploitation and the scope of moral responsibilities of researchers and funding agencies to assure that HIV clinical prevention research is conducted ethically. The she-wolf is not only associated with violence and terror, but also evokes the image of a protective, nurturing mother as in the legends of Remus and Romulus as well as Saint Ailbhe. In the two legends referred to, namely that of the Roman heroes who became the founder of Rome, as well as that of Saint Ailbhe, founder of the diocese of Emly, both the Roman twins and Saint Ailbhe were suckled by a she-wolf. The she-wolf is also associated with debauchery and concupiscence and the whorehouse is called lupanar in Latin. (shrink)

This research engaged a realist paradigm to triangulate existing literature with data that emerged from a PhD study on ministerial formation within the context of being a missional church in the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA). The study identified the need for theological training and ministerial formation to be relevant, contextual and responsive to the realities of the African communities. We concluded that current theological training module is dominated by Eurocentric expressions and narratives, which highlight an urgent need (...) for a theological and ministerial formation model that will equip leaders with relevant and contextual missional strategies necessary for rapidly transforming African communities. There is a need for decolonisation and contextualisation of academic studies in order to align theological training and leadership development with the emerging challenges within the African context. CONTRIBUTION: This article contributes to systematic, contextual and postcolonial reflections on theological education and ministerial formation in Africa. (shrink)

Il s’agit de la pièce du théâtre-rituel de Manuna Ma Njock, Orphée d’Afrique, et du roman de Werewere Liking, Orphée dAfric. Les poètes nous présentent la catabase orphique en forme de rêve et du rite de guérison. Werewere Liking s’inspire également de Thot-Hermès Trismégiste, l’homologue égyptien de Merlin. Orphée dans la pièce de Ma Njock doit parcourir les (...) neuf étapes de l’initiation qui évoquent les grades de lames du Tarot. Dans le roman de Werewere Liking, Orphée commence sa catabase après la noyade de sa femme, Nyango, qu’il doit retrouver dans le monde souterrain. Le chiffre neuf dans les deux ouvrages est employé comme symbole de la fin de l’initiation, voire l’individuation. (shrink)

Concerns have been raised in Africa to address women’s construction health and safety needs adequately. These concerns include less participation of women in the sector, low income and less benefits being given to women, lack of adequate protective construction clothing suited for women, unfavourable employment conditions for women, and lack of construction site security and other facilities for women. This research article provides an overview of the suggested solutions to address the concerns raised. In addition, practical interventions being implemented by (...) the Durban University of Technology and Makerere University research collaboration project team to address women’s needs in construction health and safety through women empowerment and involvement in construction research, education and practice in Africa are outlined. The main approaches applied in this research study are as follows: use of relevant publications on women’s construction health and safety needs in Africa and analysis of data obtained from reliable construction professional bodies in South Africa and Uganda to demonstrate gender imbalances.Contribution: The main contribution of this study was to emphasise the significance of including and involving women in construction research, education and practice as a major solution to address women’s health and safety needs in Africa in the future as women are in a much better position to understand their own needs than men.
