In this paper, we discuss challenges associated with implementing a policy for Ancillary Care (AC) for related and unrelated (serious) adverse events during an Ebola vaccine trial conducted in a remote area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Conducting clinical trials in resourceconstrained settings can raise context-related challenges that have implications for study participants’ health and wellbeing. During the Ebola vaccine study, three participants were injured in road traffic accidents, but there were unexpected difficulties when trying to apply the (...) AC policy. First, because of the nature of the adverse events, the insurer refused to cover the costs. Second, the AC policy did not address treatments by traditional medicine, even though traditional medicines are frequently used and highly trusted in the study community. This highlighted a contrast between the researchers’ well-intentioned AC approach and the participants’ legitimate preferences. The way in which researchers should address their responsibility to provide AC is not straightforward; it requires contextualization. Our experience highlights the importance of involving community representatives and the local ethics committee to ensure development of an AC policy that is culturally and ethically appropriate. Additionally, the insurance contract should clearly stipulate which adverse events are linked to the trial participation, and thus eligible for coverage, to avoid controversies when claims are made. Today many adult children find themselves in the position of caring for elderly parents and attending to the other demands of life. Because of the unique balance of power in the adult child/elderly parent relationship as well as other negative influences, many adult children find caring for parents a frustrating task. This article argues a solution to this dilemma can be found in a renewed appreciation of filial piety as it specifically relates to caring for elderly parents. Using the moral (...) insights of Aristotle and Aquinas, this paper develops a contemporary theoretical framework for geriatric filial piety that incorporates the traditional virtues of gratitude, respect, honor and obedience. It also illustrates their practical application so that adult children can find caring for their elderly parents a meaningful activity. (shrink)

A growing phenomenon in contemporary society is adult children caring for their elderly parents. Although some interest has been directed to the question of filial piety in general, surprisingly, scant attention has been focused on the ethical dimensions of caring for elderly parents. This article explores the contribution that Aquinas’s theory of the virtues of filial piety and prudence can make to the ethical dilemmas of elder care. In examining Aquinas’s theory, I explicate the relationship between moral agency and prudence, (...) with a special emphasis on the relationship between the integral parts of prudence and the exercise of moral virtue. In doing so, I suggest how Aquinas’s theory can shape and guide contemporary filial piety in order to advance quality elder care. (shrink)

This article aims at offering a broad perspective on the evolution and changes of the national Sakha kumys , a beverage made up of raw mare's milk that is quite popular in the Middle Asia area, above all among Turkic-speaking nomadic cattle breeders such as Kazaks, Bashkirs, Tatars, Tuvans, Altaians, and Sakha. I argue that, in spite of its use as an everyday commodity of the Sakha's diet until the beginning of the twentieth century, today it appears to be the (...) marker of the “degree” of cultural authenticity of the Sakha people. While behaviourist psychology had proven its worth to the US military during the Second World War, the 1950s saw behaviourism increasingly associated with a Cold War discourse of ‘totalitarianism’. This article considers the argument made in Hannah Arendt’s The Origins of Totalitarianism on totalitarianism as a form of behaviourist control. By connecting Arendt’s Cold War anti-behaviourism both to its discursive antecedents in a Progressive-era critique of industrial labour, and to contemporaneous attacks on behaviourism, this paper aims to answer two interlocking (...) questions: Why was behaviourism overtaken by cognitivism as the dominant theoretical orientation of psychologists in the 1960s, and what role did the concept of language play in this shift? Les fouilles des abords Sud de l’agora de Thasos ont mis au jour, en 2007, un trésor de 23 deniers républicains dont l’enfouissement se situe en 48/ 7 av. J.-C. ou peu après. La trouvaille confirme l’existence, dès l’époque hellénistique, d’une occupation du complexe monumental ouvrant sur l’agora au Nord, qui peut être mise en relation avec les structures en bel appareil observables sous les murs du macellum d’époque impériale. La publication permet en outre de revenir sur les modalités (...) de la circulation des deniers républicains en Grèce du Nord et à Thasos au cours du Ier s. av. J.-C. : amorcée à l’époque des guerres de Mithridate, bien après les premières interventions des Romains dans cette région, elle s’est considérablement accélérée avec les guerres civiles romaines en Orient. Une proportion importante des monnaies du trésor de Thasos a d’ailleurs été produite sous l’autorité de Pompée ou sous celle de César, en prévision de l’affrontement qui eut lieu à Pharsale en 48. Une trité d'argent portant au droit la scène de l'enlèvement de la Nymphe et au revers la légende ΒΕΡΓΑΙΟΥ fait partie d'un trésor de monnaies d'argent provenant du cimetière classique de Gazôros (Serrés). D'après le contexte archéologique, sa date d'enfouissement doit être située au milieu du IVe siècle. Deux imitations des tritai d'argent de Thasos, cinq hemiécta thasiens, un hemi- écton d'Eiôn et un hémidrachme de Néapolis faisaient également partie du trésor. Les hemiécta thasiens, qui datent des dernières (...) décennies du Ve siècle, ont eu un rôle particulièrement important dans la circulation monétaire de la région. La présence de la monnaie à la légende ΒΕΡΓΑΙΟΥ dans ce trésor nous a obligée à faire une étude approfondie de cette série, qui date des premières décennies du IVe siècle. La question de l'autorité émettrice de ces monnaies ainsi que des bronzes à la légende ΒΕΡΓ, attribués par O. Picard à la cité de Berge, est discutée. Les monnaies d'argent sont également attribuées à cette cité ; la légende avec l'ethnique au génitif neutre est interprétée comme signifiant la dénomination, selon un usage attesté par les inscriptions. AU cœur de la vie politique des hommes gît un trésor, aujourd'hui perdu. Les révolutionnaires du XVIIIe siècle pouvaient encore le nommer. En Amérique on l'appelait " bonheur public ", dans la France des Lumières son nom était " liberté publique ". EN certaines circonstances, rares et précaires, ce trésor sans âge ressurgit dans l'action politique conduite à plusieurs, lorsqu'elle se crée un espace public où la liberté peut paraître. Alors un lien se noue, qui déploie entre les (...) hommes un monde commun. Tel est le bien public. En évoquant ce trésor perdu, la philosophie d'Hannah Arendt nous invite à retrouver, à l'écart de tout pragmatisme comme de tout moralisme, le sens instituant de l'action politique qui a le monde comme condition et comme fin. C'est dans la mesure où les actions sont politiques que le monde peut être partagé ; et dans la mesure où elles visent un monde commun que ces actions sont proprement politiques. Toute politique s'apprécie au regard du monde qu'elle est susceptible d'instaurer. N'est-ce pas pourtant à l'aliénation du monde que la politique moderne nous condamne au contraire? Le trésor serait-il pour nous définitivement perdu? Ce livre suggère que, loin de proposer une philosophie politique parmi d'autres, la réflexion arendtienne inaugure une intelligence de l'action politique qui redonne sens au " vivre-ensemble ". En son cœur se tient l'analyse originale et décisive de ce qu'on peut nommer l'acosmisme du monde moderne, cette perte du monde éprouvée aussi bien dans le système totalitaire que dans la prétention technoscientifique de nos sociétés à maîtriser les conditions de l'existence. A “ late” (6th or 13th c.) coin hoard discovered at Argos This study is devoted to a monetary hoard uncovered during emergency excavations in Argos in 1998 by the IVth Ephorate of Nafplion. The bulk of this hoard consists of Byzantine coins, along side which are found examples attributed to the Vandals as well as earlier coins, some dating to the Hellenistic period. The presence of a half-follis of Justin II indicates that the hoard was deposited ca 575-580, when (...) Peloponnesus faced several successive Avaro-Slav movements. The possible presence of a 12-13th c. coin of Fauquembergues, which would significantly alter the date and the significance of this deposit, is also discussed. (shrink)

Le programme de recherche sur le domaine médiéval de Potamia, au Sud-Est de Nicosie, a conduit à la découverte d'un important ensemble de monnaies chypriotes du XIVe siècle. Ce trésor présente un intérêt exceptionnel dans la mesure où il est le seul des dépôts contemporains dont on puisse affirmer qu'il est connu dans son intégrité. Outre qu'il apporte quelques variantes nouvelles à des types connus, il fournit des éléments importants sur la production, la politique d'approvisionnement et la circulation monétaires. (...) D'un point de vue historique, il atteste la présence humaine à Potamia à une date plus haute que celle donnée par les témoignages précédemment disponibles et confirme l'importance de l'activité monnayée dans l'intérieur de Chypre. Since the studies of Adolphe Quetelet, Franz von Liszt, and Cesare Lombroso, an empirical discourse has been established at the borders of statistics, criminology, and jurisprudence that sees in the dangerous individual a paradigmatic figure of the abnormal. Zola’s novel La bête humaine converges with this statistically induced criminology in at least three points: 1. in the reference to the complex of the dangerous individual; 2. in the assumption that all social processes have a reason in a fictitious figure; (...) and 3. in the detection of a danger area in which the social body is measured alongside a distribution scale of norm and defiance. These aspects point to the fact that a diffuse and dangerous force is working within the social body as well as within the body of the individual. All social relationships are pervaded by an energetics and a drive that functions automatically and out of reach of the will of the individual. (shrink)

Les fondations du trésor de Sicyone à Delphes contiennent deux monuments archaïques exceptionnels : une tholos et un monoptère. De 1921 à 1924, G. Daux et J. Replat avaient procédé à un démontage partiel dont les résultats sont présentés et commentés ici. Environ sept cents blocs sont remployés de façon rationnelle et fondent non seulement les murs mais encore l'intérieur du trésor. Toute hypothèse sur l'identité du ou des donateurs de ces deux monuments doit tenir compte du caractère (...) unique de ce remploi. Les vestiges en place autorisent une restitution dans ses grandes lignes du trésor de la fin du vr siècle et un examen du contexte topographique de ce dernier. (shrink)

Ένας αρχαϊκός θησαυρός στο ιερό του Απόλλωνα (Θησαυρός 5): αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη Στο άρθρο αυτό παρουσιάζεται η αρχιτεκτονική μελέτη ενός από τα αρχαιότερα κτίρια του ιερού του Απόλλωνα στη Δήλο, του Θησαυρού 5. Ο θησαυρός βρίσκεται στα βόρεια του ιερού του Απόλλωνα και είναι το δυτικότερο από τα πέντε μνημεία που οικοδομήθηκαν γύρω από τον Πώρινο ναό. Η μελέτη ξεκινά με την παρουσίαση των κτιρίων αυτών, που θεωρούνται ως οίκοι. Το δεύτερο κεφάλαιο είναι αφιερωμένο στο αρχαιότερο από τα κτίρια αυτά, το (...) Θησαυρό 5 αναφέρονται επίσης οι προηγούμενες μελέτες για το μνημείο αυτό. Εξετάζεται ιδιαιτέρως και απορρίπτεται, η υπόθεση του R. Vallois για την ύπαρξη μιας κλασικής φάσης του Θησαυρού 5. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο προτείνεται η αποκατάσταση της αρχικής φάσης του δωρικού αυτού κτιρίου, το οποίο χρονολογείται γύρω στο 550 π. Χ. με βάση την τεχνική κατασκευής των θεμελίων και το στυλ του κίονά του. Το ζήτημα της ταύτισης του κτιρίου και τα κριτήρια χρονολόγησης εκτίθενται στο τελευταίο κεφάλαιο. Στο πρώτο από τα δύο παραρτήματα παρουσιάζονται οι επτά λίθοι που ο R. Vallois είχε προτείνει να αποδοθούν στην κλασική φάση του μνημείου. (shrink)

À partir d'une lecture critique de H. Arendt et J. Habermas, cet article se propose d'articuler d'un point de vue théorique et historique espace public, espace économique et question sociale. Développant une lecture associationniste de l'approche arendtienne, il souligne combien pour celle-ci le mouvement ouvrier fut historiquement porteur de l'espoir d'un nouvel espace public. Dans le prolongement de cette interprétation, il esquisse une analyse de la tradition associationniste française qui, au sein du mouvement ouvrier et socialiste, avait tenté de politiser (...) la question sociale pour redéfinir les frontières de l'espace public. Bref, comme l'économie solidaire le propose aujourd'hui en réactualisant l'héritage de cette tradition, d'inscrire dans l'espace économique de nouvelles formes de solidarité et de citoyenneté.Using a critical reading of H. Arendt and J. Habermas as a starting point, this article proposes to articulate the public and economic spheres and social questions from a theoretical and historical point of view. Developing an associationist reading of the “Arendtian” approach, it underlines how much in this approach the labour movement was historically seen as representing hopes for a new public sphere. Going further with this interpretation, the article offers an analysis of the French Associationist tradition which, within the labour and socialist movement, attempted to politicize the social question with the aim of redefining the borders of the public sphere. In short, by reviving the heritage of this tradition, the interdependent economy today seeks to include new forms of solidarity and citizenship in the economic sphere. (shrink)

A new study of the 87 coins (29 silver and 58 bronze) of Apollonia in Illyria which comprise the Dimalla treasure. The silver coins have as types a head of Apollo on the right and three nymphs dancing around the hearth of the Nymphaeon on the reverse, with names of mint officers (which are not those of the prytaneis), and having the same weight as the Roman denier. The bronze coins revert to the types that preceded the great 1st c. (...) monetary reform, but with different mint officers, names and above all different weights, which are exactly the same as those of the Roman bronze coins, and probably struck at Corinth by the praefectus of Antonius' fleet, Atratinus. This shows that Apollonia created its own monetary system between 38 and 36 BC, adapting it to the standards of the denier and the new Roman bronze coinage. (shrink)

El texto que proponemos tratará de destacar el papel que desempeña la religión en la obra más naturalista de Zola, esto es en Les Rougon-Macquart. Pero, ¿por qué elegir esta obra y no sus novelas posteriores donde el elemento religioso es mucho más evidente? Nuestra intención es desmentir el tradicional calificativo de anticlerical y de enemigo de la religión que soportó Zola hasta bien entrado el siglo XX. En efecto, sus libros esconden todo un universo religioso demasiado complejo, (...) sutil y recurrente como para ser considerado simplemente como anticlerical. Muy al contrario, atribuimos a la religión una importancia decisiva en el universo poético zoliano, en su arquitectura narrativa y en la ontología subyacente. Queremos, pues, contribuir al descubrimiento del verdadero alcance del tema religioso en Zola, fuera ya de las perspectivas sociológicas o ideológicas desde las que más comúnmente se ha tratado. Δημοσίευση θησαυρού δέκα ἑλληνιστικών ἀργυρών τετραδράχμων πού βρέθηκαν τό 1978 στίς ἀνασκαφές τοῦ Μπασσίτ στή Συρία : 6 ἀλέξανδροι ἀπό τήν Τέμνο, 3 ἀλέξανδροι ἀπό τά Ἀλάβανδα, 1 τετράδραχμο Ἀντιόχου Η'. Τό τελευταῖο κόπηκε στή Δαμασκό τό 119/8, ἐνῶ οἱ ἀλέξανδροι εἶναι αἰσθητά παλαιότεροι. Παρατηρήσεις γιά τη σύνθεση τοῦ θησαυροῦ καί γιά τό ὐστερόσημο δύο ἀλεξάνδρων ἀπό τά Ἀλάβανδα.

La publication, par J. Bousquet, du trésor de Cyrène dans le fascicule II des Fouilles de Delphes proposait d'assigner à ce bâtiment la fondation XIII (Atlas 203). L'auteur avait cependant relevé de nombreuses non-correspondances entre cette fondation et la crépis du trésor, qu'il expliquait par une interruption des travaux due à la troisième guerre sacrée. Un nouvel examen de la fondation XIV (Atlas 302), située immédiatement au-dessus de XIII, permet d'y replacer sans difficulté le trésor, dont le (...) plan s'inscrit, au pied des murs, dans un rectangle de 20 x 30 pieds. La date d'érection du trésor est précisée : entre 334 et 323 avant J.-C. La restitution du système de couronnement du péribole, sur lequel le trésor s'appuyait à l'Est, indique les niveaux de sols antiques autour de l'édifice. (shrink)

There are certain moments, such as the American founding or the Civil Rights Movement, that we revisit again and again as instances of democratic triumph, and there are other moments that haunt us as instances of democratic failure. How should we view moments of democratic failure, when both the law and citizens forsake justice? Do such moments reveal a wholesale failure of democracy or a more contested failing, pointing to what could have been, and still might be? Public Trials reveals (...) the considerable stakes of how we understand democratic failure. Maxwell argues against a tendency in the thinking of Plato, Rousseau and contemporary theorists to view moments of democratic failure as indicative of the failure of democracy, insomuch as such thinking leads to a deference to authority that unintentionally encourages complicity in elite and legal failures to assure justice. In contrast, what Maxwell calls "lost cause narratives" of democratic failure reveal the contingency of democratic failure by showing that things "could have been" otherwise-and, with public action and response, might yet be. A politics of lost causes calls for democratic responsiveness to failure via practices of resistance, theatrical claims-making, and re-narration. Maxwell makes a powerful case for the politics of lost causes by examining public controversies over trials. She focuses on the dilemmas and diagnoses of democratic failure in four instances: Edmund Burke's speeches and writings on the Warren Hastings trial in late 18th century Britain, Emile Zola's writings on the Dreyfus Affair in late 19th century France, Hannah Arendt's writings on the Eichmann trial in 1960's Israel, and Kathryn Bigelow's recent narration of (the lack of) trials of alleged terrorist detainees in Zero Dark Thirty. Maxwell marshals her subtle, historically grounded readings of these texts to show the dangers of despairing of democracy altogether, as well as the necessity of re-narrating instances of democratic failure so as to cultivate public responsiveness to such failures in the future. En France, la pensée de Hannah Arendt a longtemps souffert de l'ostracisme prononcé contre elle par le marxisme qui domina la scène intellectuelle après la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Aussi aura-t-il fallu attendre le déclin de celui-ci, à la fin des années soixante-dix, pour que l'intelligentsia française commence enfin à s'intéresser sérieusement à celle que plusieurs considèrent désormais, vingt-cinq ans après sa mort, comme le plus grand penseur politique du XXe siècle. Que cette sortie du purgatoire—qui, incidemment, doit beaucoup aux efforts (...) déployés par les intellectuels de la revue Esprit—soit maintenant accomplie, c'est ce que l'ouvrage d'Étienne Tassin confirme de la plus brillante façon, en nous offrant une lecture approfondie et rigoureuse de l'ensemble de l'œuvre, et qui se veut soucieuse avant tout de rendre sa véritable stature philosophique à l'auteure des Origines du totalitarisme. Entreprise qui ne manque pas d'audace, quand on sait qu'Arendt s'est toujours défendue de faire de la philosophie, sans pour autant jamais cesser de débattre avec les philosophes, de Platon à Heidegger en passant par Augustin, Kant et Marx.
