Electrophysiological Correlates of Processing Warning Signs With Different Background Colors: An Event-Related Potentials Investigation.Jingpeng Yuan, Zhipeng Song, Ying Hu, Huijian Fu, Xiao Liu & Jun Bian - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Warning signs, as a type of safety signs, are widely applied in our daily lives to informing people about potential hazards and prompting safe behavior. Although previous studies have paid attention to the color of warning signs, they are mostly based on surveys and behavioral experiments. The neural substrates underlying the perception of warning signs with different background colors remain not clearly characterized. Therefore, this research is intended to address this gap with event-related potentials technique. Warning signs with three different (...)

A Mind in Intelligent Personal Assistants: An Empirical Study of Mind-Based Anthropomorphism, Fulfilled Motivations, and Exploratory Usage of Intelligent Personal Assistants.Cuicui Cao, Yingying Hu & Haoxuan Xu - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Intelligent personal assistants own anthropomorphic features which enable users’ perception of anthropomorphism. Adopting the perspective of mind-based anthropomorphism, the purpose of this paper is to investigate how mind-based anthropomorphism influences users’ exploratory usage of IPAs. Based on the notion that anthropomorphism can satisfy people’s sociality and effectance motivation, we hypothesize that mind-based anthropomorphism can enhance people’s social connection with IPAs and IPA self-efficacy, which can in turn influence their exploratory usage of IPAs. Questionnaires were developed and distributed to users who (...)

Design Meets Neuroscience: An Electroencephalogram Study of Design Thinking in Concept Generation Phase.Ying Hu, Jieqian Ouyang, Huazhen Wang, Juan Zhang, An Liu, Xiaolei Min & Xing Du - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Extant research on design thinking is subjective and limited. This manuscript combines protocol analysis and electroencephalogram to read design thoughts in the core design activities of concept generation phase. The results suggest that alpha band power had event related synchronization in the scenario task and divergent thinking occupies a dominant position. However, it had event related desynchronization in analogy and inference activities, etc., and it is stronger for mental pressure and exercised cognitive processing. In addition, the parietooccipital area differs significantly (...)

Family Business Internationalization in Paradox: Effects of Socioemotional Wealth and Entrepreneurial Spirit.Chenfei Jin, Bao Wu & Yingjie Hu - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
This study investigates the internationalization of small family businesses by classifying the effects of external socioemotional wealth vs. internal socioemotional wealth. The study involved 2,704 small family businesses in China, and the results support the hypothesis that family reputation has a positive effect on internationalization, while family involvement has a negative effect on internationalization. Moreover, entrepreneurial spirit reinforces the positive effect of family reputation on internationalization and enhances the negative relationship between family involvement and internationalization. This study contributes by examining (...)

Social Trait Information in Deep Convolutional Neural Networks Trained for Face Identification.Connor J. Parde, Ying Hu, Carlos Castillo, Swami Sankaranarayanan & Alice J. O'Toole - 2019 - Cognitive Science 43 (6):e12729.
Faces provide information about a person's identity, as well as their sex, age, and ethnicity. People also infer social and personality traits from the face — judgments that can have important societal and personal consequences. In recent years, deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) have proven adept at representing the identity of a face from images that vary widely in viewpoint, illumination, expression, and appearance. These algorithms are modeled on the primate visual cortex and consist of multiple processing layers of simulated (...)

Lactate: A Novel Signaling Molecule in Synaptic Plasticity and Drug Addiction.Qiuting Wang, Ying Hu, Jiale Wan, Bo Dong & Jinhao Sun - 2019 - Bioessays 41 (8):1900008.
l‐Lactate is emerging as a crucial regulatory nexus for energy metabolism in the brain and signaling transduction in synaptic plasticity, memory processes, and drug addiction instead of being merely a waste by‐product of anaerobic glycolysis. In this review, the role of lactate in various memory processes, synapse plasticity and drug addiction on the basis of recent studies is summarized and discussed. To this end, three main parts are presented: first, lactate as an energy substrate in energy metabolism of the brain (...)

Disturbance-Observer-Based Fuzzy Control for a Robot Manipulator Using an EMG-Driven Neuromusculoskeletal Model.Longbin Zhang, Wen Qi, Yingbai Hu & Yue Chen - 2020 - Complexity 2020:1-10.
Robot manipulators have been extensively used in complex environments to complete diverse tasks. The teleoperation control based on human-like adaptivity in the robot manipulator is a growing and challenging field. This paper developed a disturbance-observer-based fuzzy control framework for a robot manipulator using an electromyography- driven neuromusculoskeletal model. The motion intention was estimated by the EMG-driven NMS model with EMG signals and joint angles from the user. The desired torque was transmitted into the desired velocity for the robot manipulator system (...)
