Compassion and envy in distributional comparisons.Flaviana Palmisano - 2023 - Theory and Decision 96 (1):153-184.
Normative-based distributional comparisons across countries and over time build upon the assumption that individuals are selfish. However, there is a consolidated evidence that individuals also care about what others have. In this paper, we propose a framework for comparing and ranking distributions that includes non-individualistic possibilities. Specifically, we consider ranking criteria that account, in one case, for the feeling of compassion and, in the other case, for the feeling of envy. These feelings are generated respectively by those having lower resources (...)

Modeling the Structure and Dynamics of Semantic Processing.Armand S. Rotaru, Gabriella Vigliocco & Stefan L. Frank - 2018 - Cognitive Science 42 (8):2890-2917.
The contents and structure of semantic memory have been the focus of much recent research, with major advances in the development of distributional models, which use word co‐occurrence information as a window into the semantics of language. In parallel, connectionist modeling has extended our knowledge of the processes engaged in semantic activation. However, these two lines of investigation have rarely been brought together. Here, we describe a processing model based on distributional semantics in which activation spreads throughout a semantic network, (...)

  5. The Self-Other Relationship Between Transcendental and Ethical Inquiries.Irina Rotaru - 2016 - Symposion: Theoretical and Applied Inquiries in Philosophy and Social Sciences 3 (1):89-101.
This paper discusses two approaches of the relationship between subjectivity and intersubjectivity. The Husserlian one, a transcendental phenomenological investigation of the possibility of subjectivity and intersubjectivity, and the Waldenfelsian one, an ethical phenomenological investigation of day to day intersubjective interactions. Both authors pretend to give account of the conditions of possibility of intersubjective interaction. However, Husserl starts with the investigation of the transcendental structure of subjectivity, that is, the fundamental conditions required for the appearance of consciousness. By contrast, Waldenfels looks (...)

  6. Die ethische Priorität des Außerordentlichen.Irina Rotaru - 2010 - Studia Phaenomenologica 10:253-269.
This interview took place on the 8th of April 2010 in München, at Professor Waldenfels’ house. The questions for this interview were meant to touch the most important ideas of Bernhard Waldenfels’ philosophy—the idea of universal order as a sign for a limited and dictatorial thinking, the respondent that replaces the traditional subject, the idea that an ethics according to which a subject is responsible for something to someone overestimates the unity of the subject and does injustice to all the (...)

Constructing Semantic Models From Words, Images, and Emojis.Armand S. Rotaru & Gabriella Vigliocco - 2020 - Cognitive Science 44 (4):e12830.
A number of recent models of semantics combine linguistic information, derived from text corpora, and visual information, derived from image collections, demonstrating that the resulting multimodal models are better than either of their unimodal counterparts, in accounting for behavioral data. Empirical work on semantic processing has shown that emotion also plays an important role especially in abstract concepts; however, models integrating emotion along with linguistic and visual information are lacking. Here, we first improve on visual and affective representations, derived from (...)

Pain in Pig Production: Text Mining Analysis of the Scientific Literature.Barbara Contiero, Giulio Cozzi, Lee Karpf & Flaviana Gottardo - 2019 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 32 (3):401-412.
Public’s concern about poor animal welfare provided by intensive farming systems has increased over the last decades. This study reviewed the interest of the scientific research on the pain issue in pig production to assess if the societal instances may be a driving force for the research activity. A literature search protocol was set up to identify the peer-reviewed papers published between 1970 and 2017 that covered the topic of ‘pain in pigs’ using Scopus®, database of Elsevier©. One hundred and (...)
