ABSTRACTIn this paper I argue that a remotely piloted aircraft pilot’s act of killing remotely, when it is done in the defense of another person, can be viewed as an act of sacrifice. This argument concludes from two premises. First, the RPA pilot faces psychological risk to self by carrying out such an action; second, the RPA pilot is motivated to some significant degree by something other than self-interest. Moreover, I challenge both the view that RPA represent merely an incremental (...) development in technology yielding an incremental expansion of the distance between the war-fighter and the target and the view that RPA is revolutionary in some fundamental sense. I instead argue that, based upon the natural geometric boundary imposed by the earth’s shape, RPA have maximized the physical distance between the war-fighter and the target and, over time, this fact will change, not only the psychological effects on the RPA pilot, but also the way we view killing and distance in general. We propose a multi-step evaluation schema designed to help procurement agencies and others to examine the ethical dimensions of autonomous systems to be applied in the security sector, including autonomous weapons systems.

In 2014, Colonel M. Shane Riza published an article in this journal arguing that remotely piloted aircraft and robotic weapons threaten the US Air Force’s warrior ethos. Riza has clearly articulated the sentiments of one side of a vibrant debate within our service. This paper presents an alternative view; a view held by some who have experienced these new forms and tools of war, and who have wrestled with their implications first-hand. In this paper, we address some methodological concerns with (...) Riza’s approach and then engage some misunderstandings about RPA’s relationship to military history and to risk. The second part of this paper takes a close look at some of the early Just War thinkers to determine what implications the tradition may have on the warrior ethos. We propose, as an alternative to Riza’s position, a return to an ethos grounded in humility, charity, and a conception of war as a last resort; in short, a return to the Just Warrior Ethos. (shrink)

The literature on the ethics of defensive harming frequently addresses imminent threats and threats of future harm; but it rarely addresses threats of continuing harm. Real-world cases of kidnapping, slavery, and domestic abuse can include threats of continuing harm. In cases such as these, the harm the victim suffers—and therefore proportionate defensive harm—depends upon both the magnitude and the duration of the harm threatened. Because continuing harms are, by definition, less than lethal, there is a _prima facie _sense in which (...) using lethal force to defend against threats of continuing harm is disproportionate. In this paper, I develop a conception of threats of continuing harm and apply that conception to individual cases of self-defense and to just war theory. Ultimately, I argue that violations of a victim’s right to freedom or autonomy can justify lethal defensive harm, but only if the harm threatened is of a sufficient duration. (shrink)

Background: The present study compared the effects of a traditional resistance training and resistance training combined with cognitive task on body composition, physical performance, cognitive function, and plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels in older adults. Methods: Thirty community-dwelling older adults were randomized into TRT and RT+CT. Exercise groups performed a similar resistance training program, twice a week over 16 weeks. Cognitive Training involved performing verbal fluency simultaneously with RT. Exercise sessions were performed 2-3 sets, 8-15 repetitions at 60-70% of 1-repetition (...) maximum. Body composition, physical function, cognitive performance, and BDNF levels were assessed before and after intervention period. Results: The physical performance was similarly improved in response to both TRT and RT+CT. However, exclusive improvements on cognitive function and BDNF levels were observed only after RT+CT. Conclusion: The RT program associated with a cognitive task, improved physical and cognitive performance in healthy older adults. (shrink)

La teoría de Benjamin Barber ha renovado por varias razones su actualidad al cumplirse 30 años de la edición de Strong Democracy. Me interesa desarrollar en este artículo la relación que Barber establece entre la necesidad de la acción política, la incertidumbre epistemológica del ámbito político y la deliberación. Reconocer esta relación puede ayudarnos a explicar la inevitabilidad de la política y, por tanto, retornar a ella. No cabe duda de que en nuestros tiempos globalizados es fácil reconocer la necesidad (...) de la acción y la incertidumbre, por lo que la teoría de Barber puede indicarnos cómo sobrellevarlas. Si la propuesta de Barber fue en su momento una inspiración para nuestras pretensiones de renovación democrática, la situación actual de nuestras democracias requiere que recuperemos ese espíritu de renovación. The theory of Benjamin Barber has renewed its topicality after the thirtieth anniversary of the publication of Strong Democracy. My aim in this paper is to explain the relationship established by Barber between the necessity of political action, epistemological uncertainty and deliberation. Acknowledging this relationship can help us explain the inevitability of politics and the necessity of return to it. There is no doubt that in our globalized world it is easy to recognize the necessity of political action and uncertainty; Barber’s theory can help us cope with them. If his proposal was in its time an inspiration for our desires of democratic renovation, the current situation of our democracies requires us to recover that spirit of renovation. (shrink)

One criticism of revisionist just war thought is often called the “contingent pacifism” objection. According to this objection, revisionist just war theory fails because it requires combatants on the just side to evaluate the moral responsibility for wrongful harm of each combatant on the unjust side to determine liability to defensive harming in each case. Combatants on the just side are epistemically barred from making these determinations. Moreover, many combatants on the unjust side (e.g., cooks and administrative soldiers) fail to (...) meet the threshold of responsibility for wrongful harm to make them liable to lethal defensive harm. Therefore, ex hypothesi, combatants on the just side will inevitably target enemy combatants who are not liable to be killed. In this paper, I offer a novel response to the contingent pacifism objection. I argue that, even on the revisionist account, participation in a military engaged in an unjust war is sufficient for liability to lethal defensive harm. First, I show merely signaling a threat of unjust harm—even if one lacks the means to actualize the threat—is sufficient for liability to defensive harm. Second, I argue that almost all participants in military activity signal a threat. Finally, I conclude that, in general, combatants on the unjust side of a conflict signal threats of unjust harm and are therefore liable to lethal defensive harming. This novel account of signaling-as-threatening disarms the contingent pacifist objection. (shrink)

In this article, I ask whether the martial virtues can serve as a role morality for soldiers. In it I compare three role morality theories and ask, according to each, whether the role of ‘soldier’ is the kind of role that generates a role morality. I conclude that the cultivation of the martial virtues may be a necessary condition for martial morality, but it is not a sufficient one. Finally, I present a positive account of a role morality for soldiers (...) that creates the space for crucial, if not traditionally martial, virtues such as respect for human life and human dignity. This work aims to promote the development of the online shopping market and improve the online marketing effect of goods. First, entrepreneurial psychology and online shopping are discussed. Then, impulse buying behavior is analyzed, and the IBB model and hypotheses of consumers are proposed under the psychological model. Finally, consumers’ IBB during COVID-19 is assessed under the psychological models. Hedonic shopping value is a psychological factor directly affecting consumers’ IBB during COVID-19. The results indicate that COVID-19 has a specific stimulating (...) effect on IBB. Meanwhile, the types of goods consumers buy during COVID-19 vary widely across age groups and regions. Overall, clothing is the most purchased item by consumers. This work provides the main reference for the improvement of the online commodity marketing effect and makes a crucial contribution to the development of the online shopping market. (shrink)

Socrates’ burial is dismissed as philosophically irrelevant in Phaedo 115c-e although it had previously been discussed by Plato’s older contemporaries. In Antisthenes’ Kyrsas dialogue describes a visit to Socrates’ tomb by a lover of Socrates who receives protreptic advice in a dream sequence while sleeping over Socrates’ grave. The dialogue is a metaphysical explanation of how Socrates’ spiritual message was continued after death. Plato underplays this metaphorical imagery by lampooning Antisthenes philosophy and his work (Phd. 81b-82e) and subsequently precludes him (...) from an active role in the Phaedo. A similar case is the exclusion of Euclides of Megara. Fragments of a lost Socratic dialogue depict Apollodorus citing an unnamed Megarian in order to justify care for the remains of the dead. Similar mistaken notions explain Kyrsas’ belief when he lusts after Socrates even though he was dead. In spite of these disputes, the philosophers (Euclides, Antisthenes and Plato) each attempted to present Socrates’ moral influence as a force that continued after his death and burial. (shrink)

RESUMOO presente artigo tem como objetivo analisar os meandros da composição e suas intertextualidades na polêmica do samba entre Noel Rosa e Wilson Batista, observando o dialogismo na interação verbal e musical entre os autores e os diversos textos da década de 1930. Ao apurar os ouvidos sobre a "polêmica do samba" observa-se que as composições revelam tensões inexoráveis entre um mundo festivo do "malandro" e os limites da realidade da época. Desse modo, com suporte em estudos que tratam deste (...) tema, busca-se trazer à tona um insight sobre este "duelo" musical que está, certamente, muito mais disseminado na sociedade que restrito a questões puramente estéticas.ABSTRACTThe purpose of this paper is to analyze the meanders of composition and their intertextuality in the samba controversy between Noel Rosa and Wilson Batista. We observe dialogism in the verbal and musical interaction between the samba writers and several texts of the 1930s. When ears are in tune with the "samba controversy," one observes that the compositions reveal inexorable tensions between the festive world of the "malandro" and the limits of the reality of the time. Accordingly, based on studies that address this theme, we aim to present an insight into this musical "duel," which is not restricted to purely aesthetics issues, but certainly disseminated in society. This essay explores the place in Clarice Lispector’s literature that seeks to touch a primary ground of the living with a language that exceeds the symbolic in order to read it from an anthropocenic, posthuman, and feminist present. It argues that the story “A menor mulher do mundo” (Laços de família, 1960) takes to an extreme what happens in all of Lispector’s literature at the point that we can find in Macabéa’s character from A hora da estrela (1976), a sort (...) of continuation of the smallest woman in the world. In both – the story and the novel – materiality comes to life and it is associated with a neutral background that goes beyond the difference between the human and the nonhuman, the feminine and the masculine, and that coincides with language, with the word. Both characters are residue and resistance, and operate in the stories in the same way that the word operates in Lispector’s writing. The Deleuzian concept of minor and its continuation on the concept of immanence are therefore read not only as a way to think beyond the species, but also as that which operates by destabilizing the concept of “woman” as a universal. Lispector’s writing, then, allows us to separate contemporary feminisms from an affirmation of the identity of the feminine and the masculine, to take them instead into an order that – regardless of whether embodied in woman – is outside the patriarchal. O objetivo deste artigo é demonstrar como a ética proferida por Epicteto se relaciona com uma postura filosófica, mais precisamente com uma atitude filosófica. Essa atitude não é especificamente uma exigência prévia para pensar a ética filosoficamente, pois não se trata de tê-la para então começar a filosofar, mas trata-se da manifestação de autenticidade daquele que se diz filósofo, porque evidencia a real assimilação das opiniões e teorias que defende. Para Epicteto, o progresso do filósofo necessariamente está unido ao progresso (...) no campo ético, sendo impossível desvinculá-los. Por entender a filosofia como um modo de vida, ele adverte para que a teoria seja sempre colocada em prática, estabelecendo assim o conhecido caráter ascético de seus ensinamentos. (shrink)

In the mid XIXth century, an illustrated intellectual minority questioned the colonial mentality of the system of Spanish domination revealing in its writings an attempt at construction of the sign of woman based on liberal, progressive and post independence ideologies. Within this minority we find the Colombian writer Soledad Acosta de Samper, whose concern for the social condition of women is revealed in her work in the image of an educated woman. Using the text La mujer en la sociedad moderna (...) [Woman in Modern Society] and the novel Una holandesa en América [A Dutch Woman in America], this article analyzes two aspects of the image of women in Acosta: that of woman as a moralizer and that of religiosity. The analysis of these two themes shows Acosta’s use of the normative discourses of the period in her project of giving woman a more important social role and they become strategies to tone down the potential for transgression of the new situation for women that she desires. מאז יצא לאור 'הזכות הטבעית וההיסטוריה' לפני כחצי מאה, נעשתה הגותו של ליאו שטראוס אחד הנושאים המסעירים ביותר בפילוסופיה המדינית, והשפעתו ניכרת גם מחוץ לכותלי האקדמיה. בספר זה שטראוס קורא תיגר על הדרך המקובלת להבנת הפילוסופיה המדינית ותולדותיה. הוא מבקר בחריפות את הגישה ההיסטוריציסטית השואפת להבין את הפילוסופיה כביטוי של רוח זמנה. לדעתו, גישה זו הביאה לאבדן המעמד הרם שהיה שמור לפילוסופיה המדינית עד למאה השמונה-עשרה, מעמד של "מלכת" מדעי האדם או "הלימוד המקיף של העניינים האנושיים". לדידו של שטראוס, ירידת (...) מעמדה של הפילוסופיה המדינית היא אחד מתסמיני המשבר הפוליטי והמוסרי של הליברליזם המודרני ושל תרבות המערב בכללותה. שטראוס מציע לחזור לשאלות שנשכחו מאז הובס, לוק ורוסו: האם יש לבני אדם זכויות טבעיות? האם יש אמות מידה בלתי משתנות של הצודק והנכון? ומהו הקשר בין הטוב לנעים, בין הנאצל לצודק? התשובות לשאלות הללו מוליכות לחיפוש אחר הנכון הטבעי, ואילו דחיקתן מביאה לאבדן ההבנה של האדם כיצור המסוגל לחרוג מעצמו למען תכלית נעלה ממנו - חריגה המאצילה עליו גדוּלה ואצילות. Neste artigo elaboramos um estudo exegético de 1Coríntios 2,1-5 com o objetivo de cotejar com a visão estoica de sabedoria. Na perícope em questão, assim como no contexto de 1 Coríntios, Paulo torna explícita sua defesa de superação do ideal de sabedoria, pois defende que esta ainda se encontra no nível humano, não divino. Ao fazer isso, o apóstolo se opõe a uma das principais linhas filosóficas de sua época, o estoicismo, uma vez que os estoicos têm por finalidade justamente (...) a sabedoria, ou mais objetivamente, a vida sábia. The ostensive definition, based on ostensiveness, aims to indicate that human language is based only on gesture and indication. In this sense, such linguistic theory largely excludes the considerable eminence of symbology and internalization inscribed in the dynamics and interiority inherent to human language. Thus, the ostensible definition, with the intention of being a paradigmatic thesis about human language, would not explain or synthesize in itself all the richness present in human language. Before that, or this article intends to reflect (...) on the ambiguity of the ostensive definition and the convergence between Wittgenstein and Augustine. Both, temporarily distant, do not endorse the ostensible definition as the basis of their theses about human language. Also, first, a concept about the ostensive definition will be presented. Deepen Wittgenstein's critique of such a linguistic concept and, finally, consider that Augustine did not have an ostensible definition as the basis of his conception of language. (shrink)

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar un análisis contextual de la direccionalidad del marxismo latinoamericano desde la muerte de José Carlos Mariátegui hasta nuestros días. Inevitablemente, este empeño tropieza con las diversas formas en que se ha manifestado el pensamiento de izquierda, con sus disímiles proyecciones, y, sobre todo, con la forma en que ha enfrentado los distintos acontecimientos históricos en el continente. En este sentido, el trabajo parte de la forma auténtica de marxismo, cuya expresión más genuina fue (...) el pensamiento de Mariàtegui,asì como los alejamientos posteriores respecto al marxismo clásico, vislumbrados preferentemente en los posicionamientos teóricos de algunas figuras en la etapa controversial del “empobrecimiento” del marxismo en América Latina(1941-1958).Se reflexiona en torno al mantenimiento de esta tradición crítica del marxismo latinoamericano y la forma que entroniza con otras tendencias de pensamiento denominadas que se ubican dentro de la perspectiva del “pensamiento crítico”. En este artículo se hace un acercamiento entre el pintor ecuatoriano Oswaldo Guayasamín y el pedagogo brasileño Paulo Freire, a partir de las configuraciones afectivas de la ira y la esperanza que se expresan en sus obras y que, a nuestro juicio, ambos tienen en común. La perspectiva que asumimos en nuestra indagación parte de la comprensión que tiene Paul Ricoeur sobre la hermenéutica, por tanto, es desde este horizonte que abordamos sus obras para preguntamos, finalmente, si las configuraciones afectivas, (...) en las que juegan un papel preponderante la ira, la indignación y la esperanza, dan cuenta de una específica manera de vivir y constituir nuestra experiencia latinoamericana. A fugacidade é própria de todo o ente, pois esse recebe o ser e não tem por si a sua existência. Já a eternidade é atributo único do Ser, de Deus, pois é o necessário por si. Nesse sentido, o presente artigo visa refletir sobre a efemeridade dos entes corruptíveis e dos entes incorruptíveis, bem como acerca da eternidade de Deus na terceira via tomásica. Deste modo, em primeiro lugar, apresentar-se-á a referida prova acerca da existência de Deus. Num segundo (...) momento, será tecido um apontamento acerca da efemeridade dos entes corruptíveis, os quais sofrem os efeitos da dinâmica da geração e corrupção. Depois, verificar-se-á que os entes incorruptíveis também possuem uma existência efêmera, pois podem ser aniquilados por Deus. Por fim, será elucidado que Deus é o Ser necessário por si e por isso é eterno. Haja vista que Deus concede e mantém a existência de todo o ente. (shrink)

El presente artículo pretende, por un lado, estudiar la genealogía del término biopolítica, pasando por el término bíos. Para sostener tal reflexión, se utilizará la primera parte del libro de Roberto Esposito, Bíos. El término biopolítica pasa por una mutación, desde su primera utilización, en 1905. Por otro lado, con base en los datos presentados en la primera parte del capítulo, se hará un análisis de la consagración del término hecha por Michel Foucault. O presente texto, cujo título é “O campo como nómos biopolítico da modernidade e a figura do muçulmano” tem por objetivo geral examinar a noção de campo como nómos biopolítico presente na modernidade, segundo as afirmações da obra de Giorgio Agamben, destacando a figura do muçulmano como seu habitante e como um paradigma da vida nua em oposição à forma-de-vida. Para que se possa realizar o objetivo proposto, iniciamos com a abordagem dos conceitos de vida nua e de biopolítica em (...) Agamben, indicando alguns de seus interlocutores, tais como Michel Foucault e Hannah Arendt. Em seguida, analisamos o conceito de campo, que caracteriza o Estado de exceção permanente na modernidade, e a figura do mulçumano, no interior dele. Por último, apresentamos breves considerações acerca da enigmática noção de forma-de-vida, com hífen, enquanto oposta a vida nua, na medida em que uma torna inoperante a politização da vida, a biopolítica. Bajo el formato de conversatorio, este trabajo se propone reflexionar en torno al estado de la cuestión que estudia la migración senegalesa en Argentina. Mediante el diálogo, sus autores pretenden ahondar en las particularidades de sus respectivos casos de estudio a la luz de las discusiones generales que organizan el debate académico sobre esta corriente migratoria contemporánea. El artículo profundiza en los aspectos teórico-metodológicos desarrollados por las investigaciones principales en el país. Al mismo tiempo, es ilustrado por la problematización de (...) ejemplos de corte empírico observados en sus respectivos trabajos de campo.Su aporte principal es plantear, en primer lugar, cuáles son los debates saldados y emergentes desarrollados por las investigaciones. En segundo lugar, avanzar en una contrastación de fenómenos de estudio, contextual y societalmente situados en distintas ciudades del territorio nacional. (shrink)

Se propone una lectura de El laberinto de la soledad desde la imagología literaria, línea de trabajo de la literatura comparada contemporánea, que estudia las representaciones del extranjero y la alteridad en los textos literarios. La indagación sobre la alteridad produce imágenes de identidad. Se busca comprender las imágenes de la mexicanidad en la obra de Octavio Paz a partir de los contrastes con la alteridad. Estas imágenes corresponden a un periodo histórico específico. Proponemos un diálogo con los imaginarios representados (...) en obras de Carlos Fuentes y Juan Rulfo, para mostrar de qué manera El laberinto de la soledad proporciona claves para leer la cultura de su época. En este artículo me ocupo inicialmente de la teoría de la esclavitud de Aristóteles en el libro i de la Política, con el fin de mostrar la utilización de dos procedimientos: uno dialéctico, a partir de la discusión con Platón, y otro retórico, con la utilización de metáforas y testimonios con los que configura el marco epistemológico de su teoría. Luego, me concentraré en un asunto por esclarecer: la diferencia ente los endoxa, la tesis y el testimonio. Al describir el (...) método dialéctico en los Tópicos, Aristóteles precisa el significado de los términos endoxa y tesis. Por su parte, en los libros i y ii de la Retórica, Aristóteles se ocupa del testimonio. Por consiguiente, identificaré estos dos tipos de procedimientos, los tipos de pruebas y las conclusiones en el libro i de la Política de Aristóteles, a partir de las características elaboradas en los Tópicos y en la Retórica.
