The epistemic attitudes of scientists, such as epistemic tolerance and authoritarianism, play important roles in the discourse about rivaling theories. Epistemic tolerance stands for the mental attitude of an epistemic agent, e.g., a scientist, who is open to opposing views, while epistemic authoritarianism represents the tendency to uncritically accept views of authorities. Another relevant epistemic factor when it comes to the epistemic decisions of scientists is the skepticism towards the scientific method. However, the question is whether these epistemic attitudes are (...) influenced by their sociopolitical counterparts, such as the researcher’s degree of conservatism. To empirically investigate the interplay between epistemic and sociopolitical attitudes of scientists, we conducted a survey with researchers (N = 655) across different disciplines. We propose scales for measuring epistemic tolerance and epistemic authoritarianism, as well as a scale for detecting the participants' readiness to question the scientific method. Furthermore, we investigate the relationship between epistemic tolerance and epistemic authoritarianism on the one hand, and career stage and sociopolitical views on the other hand. Interestingly, our study found only small correlations between the participants' degree of conservatism and their epistemic attitudes. This suggests that political views, against common argumentation, actually do not play an important role in one’s scientific decisions. Moreover, social scientists scored higher on the epistemic tolerance and lower on the epistemic authoritarianism scale than natural scientists. Finally, the results indicate that natural scientists question the scientific method less than social scientists. (shrink)

While the first wave of memory boom was supposed to legitimate the emerging nation-states, the second boom signified the exhaustion of the old paradigm of nationalism, decline of the nation-state, as well as the emergence of a new paradigm: globalization.

The present research examines how children’s time spent online is associated with their perceived life satisfaction accounting for their age, gender, socio-economic status, emotional problems, country, and family environmental factors. This article is based on the data of the large scale cross-sectional EU Kids Online survey from 16 European countries with nationally representative samples of children aged 9–17. The results indicated that the time children spent online appeared to have no considerable negative effect on their self-reported life satisfaction. Comparatively, the (...) positive effects of children’s SES and family environment accounted for 43% of the overall 50% of the variance in children’s SRLS scores. Considering that children’s SES alone accounted for 42% of the variance, children’s emotional problems, country of residence, and enabling parental mediation accounted for the remaining 3, 4, and 1% of the variance, respectively. In line with previous studies that urge caution when discussing the negative influence of time spent online on children’s mental health and overall wellbeing, the current findings suggest that social-ecological characteristics and how children use the Internet, need to be examined further. The notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk as a modern political phenomenon – the merging of art and life and the artistic transformation of life in its totality – has been limited to public political spectacle and the theatrical enactments of state programs. In contrast, this article about the Soviet 1920s and 1930s looks at everyday life or, in Russian, byt, as the primary domain of modern aesthetico-political intervention. The successful ordering of everyday life according to the principles of communism would mean (...) that even the most intimate aspects of citizens’ lives become part of a total work of art, which now encompasses not only the public but also the private sphere. The author traces the evolution of byt reform from the aesthetic associations between bureaucrats and artists of the 1920s to the 1930s mobilization of ordinary citizens as artists who mould their everyday environments in accordance with Stalinist politics. Dvesta dvadeset godina nakon Francuske revolucije, problem odredjenja pojma prosvetiteljstva i dalje istrajava. U radu ce se pokazati da odredjenje ovog pojma nikada i nije bilo sasvim jasno. Stoga se predlaze pravljenje distinkcije izmedju prosvecenosti i prosvetiteljstva. Prosvetiteljstvo kao period koji se vezuje za Evropu XVIII veka, moze se tumaciti kao deo sireg procesa prosvecenosti, ili, bolje, prosvecivanja. Videcemo da se prosvetiteljstvo ne moze posmatrati kao homogen, jedinstven proces, vec da bi ga pre trebalo videti kao tkivo, koje i dalje (...) utice na misao i kulturu Zapada. Medjutim, utvrdice se i da optuzbe na racun?naknadnog projektovanja prosvetiteljstva? nisu narocito korisne, buduci da osujecuju mogucnost razumevanja jednog slozenog fenomena i veoma znacajnog pokreta u evropskoj povesti. Researchers who have attempted to collect and compare bilateral labor agreements have encountered varying degrees of accessibility of information on these agreements. Why is it harder to find out information on some bilateral labor agreements than others? In this Article, we argue that it is more difficult to find information and agreements tend to be more informal when governments want to obscure what they are doing. Building on insights from the study of optimal obfuscation in trade policy and research on (...) informal institutions in international politics, we argue that policymakers use more informal agreements and make it more difficult to find information on BLAs when they think they will be politically unpopular and are unlikely to be ratified. In contrast, leaders will be more likely to use formal agreements when they want to lock in a policy. Drawing on original quantitative data on the accessibility of information on bilateral labor agreements and Peters’ 2019 database on BLAs, the Article analyzes the accessibility of information on bilateral labor agreements and finds some support for our argument. ObjectivesTo compare changes in the number and amount of payments received by orthopedic and non-orthopedic surgeons from industry between 2014 and 2017.MethodsUsing the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Open Payment database from 2014 to 2017, we conducted a retrospective cohort study of industry payments to surgeons, including general payments and research payments.ResultsAmong orthopedic surgeons, the total number of general payments decreased from 248,698 in 2014 to 241,966 in 2017, but their total value increased from $97.1 million in 2014 (...) to $110.2 million in 2017. Among non-orthopedic surgeons, the total number decreased from 604,884 in 2014 to 582,490 in 2017, while the total value remained stable at approximately $159 million. Between 2014 and 2017, there was a differential increase in the median number of general payments received by non-orthopedic when compared to orthopedic surgeons (incidence rate ratio, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.08–1.09; p < 0.001), but a differential decline in the median value of general payments (− 8.9%; 95% CI, − 9.5%, − 8.4%; p < 0.001). Findings were consistent when stratified by nature of payment. In contrast, between 2014 and 2017, there was neither a differential change in the median number nor median value of research payments received by non-orthopedics.ConclusionExamination of a natural experiment of prior public disclosure of payments to orthopedic surgeons suggests that the Physician Payment Sunshine Act was associated with an increase in the number, but a decline in the value, of general payments received by non-orthopedic surgeons, but not on research payments received. Da li se vrlina moze nauciti je pitanje oko koga su se lomila koplja u previranju i borbi za prevlast izmedju sofistike i starohelenske etike kao dva osnovna principa antickog duha. Dva velika predstavnika ovih suprotstavljenih principa Platon i Protagora sucelili su svoje argumente u dijalogu koji nosi naziv velikog sofiste. U ovoj filosofskoj borbi paradoksalno Protagora koji tvrdi da se vrlina moze nauciti dolazi do stava da vrlina nije znanje, a Platon koji brani starohelenski princip da je vrlina urodjena (...) tvrdi da je vrlina znanje. Platon resenje ovog velikog spora dva anticka principa vidi u filosofskoj teoretizaciji starohelenske mitske slike svijeta. (shrink)

It is assumed that only a narrow group of philosophers is able to put this theory into practice, and using repressive measures. The fewer the initiated the greater the repression. It is assumed that those who do not know the truth can neither predict their destiny nor do anything to make it better because they are unable to understand the goal and purpose of the repression. It (...) is demonstrated that, in the imagined use of force, the sophists, who do acknowledge it, resort to repression to a much lesser extent than Plato?s philosopher. At first, Plato?s philosopher rejects the use of force as virtue, but it turns out to be indispensible, and in incomparably more aspects than it was in the sophists? case. (shrink)

Progres i otkrice apokaliptickih sredstava doveli su covjeka u radikalno novu situaciju moguceg samounistenja. Zivot u sjenci samoapokalipse otvara nove osnovne dileme i pitanja razumjevanja smisla covjekovog djelovanja i namece kao najvazniji cilj sam opstanak covjecanstva. Da li postojeca etika i moderna politicka filosofija mogu da odgovore na izazove apokaliptickog ruleta sa kojim se covjecanstvo suocava, ili su potrebni sasvim novi principi politickog organizovanja, sredisnje je pitanje na koje se trazi odgovor.

Early Greek ethics embodied in Cretan and Spartan mores, served as a model for Plato`s political theory. Plato theorized the contents of early Greek ethics, aspiring to justify and revitalize the fundamental principles of a traditional view of the world. However, according to Plato`s new insight, deed is further from the truth than a thought i.e. theory. The dorian model had to renounce its position to the perfect prototype of a righteous state, which is a result of the inner logic (...) of philosophical theorizing in early Greek ethics. Prototype and model of philosophical reflection, in comparison to philosophical theory, becomes minor and deficient. Philosophical theorizing of early Greek ethics philosophically formatted Greek heritage, initiating substantial changes to the content of traditional ethics. Replacement of the myth with ontology, as a new foundation of politics, transformed early Greek ethics in various relevant ways. (shrink)

Starohelenska etika nosila je u svom predanju protivrjecan odnos u razumjevanju vrline kao kljucnog pojma na kojem se zasniva polis i politika. Na izostravanju i objelodanjavanju ove protivrjecnosti umnogome je doprinjela sofistika koja je mjerilom racionalnosti uocavala ona filosofski nedovoljno razjasnjena mjesta u starohelenskoj slici svijeta. Da bi razrjesio protivrjecnost nastalu iz nacelnog tradicionalnog stava da se vrlina ne moze nauciti i stava da je vrlina povezana sa znanjem, Platon uvodi u razmatranje pojam sjecanja. Sjecanje postaje sredisnja tacka u Platonovom (...) prevazilazenju navedene protivrjecnosti. Razmatraju se dva oblika sjecanja, ono koje je univerzalno ali i time samo potencijalno dato, i ono koje je djelatno i koje vodi do teorije ideja koja odredjuje sta jeste vrlina. U ovom tekstu razmatra se Platonova problematizacija odnosa drzave, slobode i znanja, u njegovim analizama razlicitih aspekata uzorne drzava. Drzavu Platon razumjeva kao opste dobro, a svrha njenog uspostavljanja jeste da se, u skladu s pravicnoscu, nadomjesti nedovoljnost koja je imanentna svakom pojedincu. Pravicnost je prisutna samo ukoliko su u cjelinu polisa harmonicno povezane sve razlicite i pojedinacne sposobnosti. Platon u svojim suptilnim analizama ukazuje da je za postojanje pravicne drzave neophdno da volja covjeka, u klasi cuvara, bude u potpunosti (...) vezana za dobro, odnosno za poznavanje dobra. Ovo stavljanje u jedan uzrocni sklop znanja, volje i dobra najbolje pokazuje odsutnost saznanja da volja covjeka, uslijed njene slobode izbora zapravo ne stoji pod potpuno odredjujucim uticajem znanja i dobra. Nalazeci se neprestano u stanju slobode izbora, covjek cesto bira suprotno sopstvenom saznanju i razumjevanju dobra. U sferi teorijskog mogu se navesti dobri primjeri medjusobne uslovljenosti volje, znanja i dobra. Naime, sticanjem uverenja da je neko saznanje istinito, s?mo to uvjerenje najcesce povlaci nasu volju da stoji uz to saznanje. Platon podrazumijeva da se ova povezanost u domenu teorijskog moze prenijeti i u sferu prakse, odakle proizilazi i njegova zamisao da se zivot polisa uredi na osnovu ucestovanja u istinitom svijetu ideja. Ali, opravdano se postavlja pitanje da li se ovo iskustvo iz teorijske sfere moze u potpunosti prenijeti u polje prakticnog. (shrink)

The issue of traditionalism versus modern subjectivism in the light of the conflict of Edmund Burke`s conservatism with the Enlightenment as the ideological basis of the French revolution was not discussed or studied sufficiently in our political and philosophical theory. In this paper we are reconsidering a theoretical debate between arising modern rationalism of Enlightenment and European traditionalism. The text further explains on the reasons for choosing this subject and course the research will take subsequently. An overview is provided of (...) the most important topics as well as a preliminary conception of the problem structure in this research. Considering the importance and overwhelming influence exhorted by French revolution it is only logical that the event of such magnitude met not only with approvals but with challenges and disputes as well, and all of it contributed to the theoretical considerations of the historical sense and purpose of this event. The aim of the project is to provide explanations and evaluations of the origins Enlightenment on one hand side and theoretically reconsidered traditionalism on the other. Looking at the dawn of modern era and evaluating these events would cast sharper light on the spirit of times of this crucial moment of history, and it would provide new basis for reconsideration of the achievements and implications of the fundamental ideas of Moderna. Pitanje odnosa tradicionalizma i moderne subjektivnosti, posebno u konkretnom kontekstu suceljavanja konzervativizma Edmunda Berka i prosvetiteljstva kao idejna osnove Francuske revolucije, i pored svog neospornog znacaja, kod nas ni izdaleka nije dovoljno razmotreno i osvetljeno. Radi se, dakle, o teorijskom suceljavanju starog evropskog tradicionalizma i nastupajuceg modernog prosvetiteljskog racionalizma. U tekstu se obrazlaze zbog cega je ova tema uzeta za predmet istrazivanja, kao i u kom smjeru ce se u osnovi istrazivanje kretati. Takodje, dat je pregled najvaznijih problemskih mjesta, relevantnih parametara, i kako je preliminarno zamisljena problemska struktura ovog istrazivanja. Posto Francuska revolucija predstavlja epohalni dogadjaj koji je opredijelio prelaz iz tradicionalne Evrope u moderno doba, sasvim je prirodno da je dogadjaj od takvog znacaja izazvao ne samo odobravanja, vec i reakciju i osporavanja, koja su sa svoje strane uticala na dalju teoretizaciju svrhe i smisla ovog istorijsko-drustvenog preokreta. Osnovni cilj istrazivanja je da se rasvjetli fundamentalna ravan nastanka kako prosvetiteljstva tako i teoretizovanog tradicionalizma, cime se umnogome doprinosi da se jasnije razaznaju svi slojevi prosvetiteljskog teorijskog koncepta, kao i teorijska utemeljenost konzervativizma, koji je u vidu tradicionalizma veoma dugo i bez razvijene teorijske podloge predstavljao neupitanu vladajucu formu za ukupan drustveni i politicki zivot. Ovakav pristup doprinosi da se jasnije osvjetli duh vremena na prelazu u moderno doba, u kome je doslo do radikalnog preokreta u svim sferama zivota. Neophodno je, dakle, da se i iz ove perspektive reaktualizuje promisljanje dometa i implikacija fundamentalnih ideja moderne. (shrink)

U borbi oko vrline koja se vodila izmedju Platona i sofista, Platon nastoji da sacuva sadrzaj starohelenske etike, ali ne i njegovu mitsku formu, u kojoj je sofistika otkrila bitne nedostatke i zahvaljujuci tome dovela u pitanje i ukupan sadrzaj starohelenske etike. S druge strane, Platon prihvata novu formu racionalnog misljenja, ali ne i ukidajucu jednostranost racionalnosti sofistike. Drugim rijecima, Platon pristupa teoretizaciji sadrzaja starohelenske etike nastojeci na taj nacin da pomiri osnovno nacelo tradicionalnog pogleda na svijet s novom vladajucom (...) formom misljenja.
